ABOUT BUDDY GUY: Buddy Guy is among the most notable historic catalysts for evolution of the Electronic Blues genre, and has continued to influence the world of music since his career began with Chicago’s Chess Records in the late ‘50s. This marked the time period of iconic change in the world of Blues and led to the creation of the well-known West Side sound of Chicago, which Guy pioneered with Magic Sam and Otis Rush. Guy can also be seen in the Foo Fighter’s documentary series, Sonic Highways, which features a compilation of interviews and footage from his journey that emphasize his ability to “make something from nothing” as the son of a sharecropper from Lettsworth, Louisiana. In the beginning, recording alongside Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the rest of Chess Records’ label helped Guy explore his abilities and gain recognition that would lead to his faithful following of over 50 years. Buddy Guy is ranked 23rd on the Rolling Stones’ list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and has received such prestigious awards as the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, a record 34 Blues Music Awards, seven Grammy Awards and the 2012 Kennedy Center Honor Award. He has performed with countless well-known artists, namely the Rolling Stones, and is seen performing with them in archive footage included in the 2008 documentary film, Shine a Light. Guy’s most recently released albums, Rhythm & Blues (2013) and Born to Play Guitar (2015), both debuted as No. 1 on the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart, with Born to Play Guitar comprising of collaborations with icons Van Morrison, Joss Stone, Kim Wilson and Billy Gibbons. Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

  • The Title of Buddy Guy's Latest Album Says It All: the Blues Is Alive and Well
The title of Buddy Guy's latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist's eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015's Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. "I got children and grandchildren who didn't know who I was, but nowadays we can play outdoor concerts and see kids that are eight, nine, twelve years old coming to me and saying, 'I didn't know who you was, but I read what Eric Clapton said about you,'" Guy explains when discussing his mindset around the new record. "I'm always trying to make an album that someone accidentally plays where some kid hears it, picks up a guitar, and helps keep the blues alive." And it only takes one listen to The Blues Is Alive and Well to realize that Guy's mission has been more than accomplished here. The record is arriving on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 81-year-old performer: at the 2016 Grammys, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honoring Born to Play Guitar, and that same year he hit the road for a U.S. tour opening for Jeff Beck. In addition to bringing the house down for a recent sold-out performance commemorating the closing of New York City's B.B. King's Blues Club and Grill, he recently appeared on David Letterman's Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
