Rochester, N.Y., April 16, 2015 – Geva Theatre Center presents Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike – Christopher Durang’s laugh-out-loud, Tony Award-winning comedy, directed by Bruce Jordan. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike begins performances May 5, opens May 9, and runs in the Elaine P. Wilson Mainstage through May 31. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. When their movie-star sister Masha makes a surprise visit with her hot boy-toy Spike in tow, so begins an unforgettable weekend of rivalry, regret and hilarious racket in this wacky, Chekhovian mash-up. By the end of their impromptu family reunion, this lovable bunch won't ever be the same! Christopher Durang’s plays include A History of American Film (Tony Award nomination, Best Book of a Musical), The Actor’s Nightmare, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You (Obie Award, Off-Broadway run, 1981-83), Beyond Therapy (on Broadway in 1982, with Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow), Baby With the Bathwater (Playwrights Horizons, 1983), The Marriage of Bette and Boo (Public Theater, 1985; Obie Award, Dramatists Guild Hull Warriner Award), Laughing Wild (Playwrights Horizons, 1987), and Durang Durang (an evening of six plays at Manhattan Theatre Club, 1994, including the Tennessee Williams parody For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls). In 1996, he was commissioned by the Rodgers and Hammerstein Foundation to write a new book for the popular musical Babes in Arms. Sex and Longing was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater and was presented on Broadway in fall 1996 starring Sigourney Weaver. The Idiots Karamazov, a full- length play with music written with Albert Innaurato, was revived at the American Repertory Theatre. His play Betty’s Summer Vacation (Drama Desk Award nomination) had its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons in February 1999 to great critical acclaim and sold-out houses and was extended three times. It was the recipient of four Obie Awards, for distinguished playwriting, directing, acting, and set design. His musical (with music by Peter Melnick), Adrift In Macao, premiered at New York Stage and Film in the summer of 2002. Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge was commissioned by Pittsburgh’s City Theater and had its world premiere in November 2002. In the early '80s, he and Sigourney Weaver co-wrote and performed in their acclaimed Brecht-Weill parody Das Lusitania Songspiel and were both nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Best Performer in a Musical. In 1993, he sang and tried to dance in the five-person, Off-Broadway Sondheim revue Putting It Together, with Julie Andrews at Manhattan Theatre Club. And he played a singing Congressman in Call Me Madam with Tyne Daly as part of Encores. He can be heard on cast recordings of both productions. In movies, he has appeared in The Secret of my Success, Mr. North, The Butcher's Wife, Housesitter, The Cowboy Way, The Object of my Affection, Simply Irresistible, and The Out of Towners, among others. For television, he wrote for a Carol Burnett special called "Carol and Robin and Whoopi and Carl;" and for PBS’ series Trying Times, he wrote a teleplay called The Visit starring Swoosie Kurtz as Wanda, the upsetting houseguest. He’s written several screenplays, including The House of Husbands (co-authored with Wendy Wasserstein), The Adventures of Lola for Tri-Star and director Herbert Ross, The Nun who Shot Liberty Valance, and his own adaptation of Sister Mary… which aired on Showtime with Diane Keaton in the title role; and two sitcom pilots, “Billy and Meg” (for Fox Television) and “Dysfunction! - The TV Show” for Warner Brothers. He hopes one day they will be produced, perhaps in heaven. He has an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama. Early in his career, he won a Guggenheim, a Rockefeller, the CBS Playwriting Fellowship, the Lecompte du Nouy Foundation grant, and the Kenyon Festival Theatre Playwriting Prize. In 1995 he won the prestigious three-year Lila Wallace Readers’ Digest Award; as part of his grant, he ran a writing workshop for adult children of alcoholics. Since 1994 he has been co-chair with Marsha Norman of the Playwriting Program at the Juilliard School in Manhattan. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild Council. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike premiered at the McCarter Theatre in 2012. Following an Off-Broadway run, it transferred to Broadway in 2013. It received six Tony Award nominations and was awarded the Tony, Drama Desk, NY Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best New Play. Making their Geva Theatre Center debuts in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike are Maren Bush (short film Reaching Home and TV pilot of “Sharing”) as Nina; Toni DiBuono (Broadway productions of The Boys from Syracuse, Wonderful Town and original cast member of Forbidden Broadway) as Sonia; Danielle Lee Greaves (Broadway productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Rent, Hairspray, Sunset Boulevard and Show Boat) as Cassandra; Margaret Reed (“As the World Turns,” “Law & Order: SVU,” HBO’s Mildred Pierce, Off-Broadway production of Orson’s Shadow, LA Premiere of Other People’s Money at the Pasadena Playhouse) as Masha; John Scherer (Broadway productions of LoveMusik, Sunset Boulevard and By Jeeves) as Vanya and Gregory Isaac Stone (Denver Center’s The Lord of the Flies) as Spike. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is directed by Bruce Jordan and the design team includes Bill Clarke (scenic design), Mimi Maxmen (costume design), Ann G. " Tapping my toe, just tapping my toe" she sings, to the tune of "Singin' in the Rain," before a crowd of kindergarteners at a downtown elementary school in Atlanta. "What a glorious feeling, I'm — nodding my head!" The kids gleefully tap their toes and nod themselves silly as they sing along. "Give yourselves a standing O!" Ms. Edson cries, when the song ends. Her charges scramble to their feet and clap their hands, sending their arms arcing overhead in a giant "O." This willowy 37-year-old woman with tousled brown hair and a big grin couldn't seem more different from Dr. Vivian Bearing, the brilliant, emotionally remote English professor who is the heroine of her play WIT — which has won such unanimous critical acclaim in its small Off- Broadway production. Vivian is a 50-year-old scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donne's "Holy Sonnets." When we meet her, she is dying of very placement of a comma crystallizing mysteries of life and death for ovarian cancer. Bald from chemotherapy, she makes her entrance clad Vivian and her audience. For this feat, one critic demanded that Ms. Edson in a hospital gown, dragging an IV pole.

For the second consecutive year, the Fountain Theatre is offering you the Los Angeles Premiere of a recent Pulitzer Prize winning play. Last season, we proudly produced the second production of Martyna Majok’s poignant Cost of Living, following the New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club. We are thrilled to now share Stephen Adly Guirgis’ funny and powerful Between Riverside and Crazy. These back-to-back prize winners demonstrate how the Fountain aims to always provide you with theatre of the highest quality on our intimate stage. Stephen Adly Guirgis is widely considered to be one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged from New York theater in decades. This acclaimed and award-winning playwright humbly admits, “A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. But it’s going to create a community to perform it, and it’s going to be performed for a community, and when those communities are spicy, when there’s different ingredients in the pot, that, to me, is the most beautiful thing.” In Guirgis’ delightful new play, a fiery group of misfits and outcasts discover how to become a family in a cavernous rent-controlled apartment on Riverside Drive.
