WWE, Fans Win With A Freud Between Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan Author : David Levin As odd as it sounds, the wrestler who will be most affected by the return of Daniel Bryan’s wrestling career could be Roman Reigns. The soon-to-be Universal Champion is finally winning over part of the WWE Universe, but that all could change with two words... Superstar Shakeup. If WWE decides to flip the script and make major roster changes following WrestleMania 34, Bryan could move to Monday night, which would end any momentum Reigns has after taking down Brock Lesnar. Reigns is everything Bryan is not. And while he has the look and the pedigree to be a champion many times over, he is not charismatic enigma fans hope for. You have to look to Seth Rollins or John Cena or Bryan for that kind of engagement. WWE has built Reigns to be this mega force, the man who is Superman and The Hulk wrapped into one character in Kevlar. At first, when Reigns was part of The Shield, it worked. But at the height of popularity, when fans wanted change, something happened. Daniel Bryan happened. Chris Featherstone explains it in his story on inquisitr.com. “While WWE has Reigns compete as a babyface, the fans have heavily jeered him in over the past few years. With excuses such as “he can’t wrestle” or “he’s getting shoved down our throats” being a common theme, 1 / 2 former WWE Creative member Bruce Prichard revealed the first moment when Reigns’ ovation started to shift from negative to positive.” Reigns has been “the guy” the past four WrestleMania events including this year. Not because of his fan support, but rather in spite of it. In Featherstone’s story, Pritchard reveals exactly when the tide turned for the three-time WWE World Champion. “What hurt Roman Reigns is that everyone wanted something new, they wanted something different. And the guy everyone wanted was Roman Reigns,” said Prichard. “That’s because Daniel Bryan was out [with an injury], so they gave them Roman Reigns. Everyone was ready for him, and we get to the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia, set to anoint Roman Reigns, and they bring back Daniel Bryan and the people wanted him! Prior to Daniel Bryan being a part of all of that, they wanted Roman.” Prichard also strongly advocated that WWE should have held off bringing Bryan, back, because it ultimately hurt Reigns. It’s the perfect storyline that does what every WWE fans wants – turns Reigns heel and makes Bryan more popular than ever. For the past two years, the notion of Reigns’ stance has been simple. He isn’t a good guy, he isn’t a bad guy. He is “The Guy” in this company. Putting him over as a villain, especially when caught in a program with the reborn Bryan will have the professional wrestling community on its feet in anticipation. Ultimately, however, it does the same thing WWE did when Bryan returned from injury a few years ago. My friend and fellow wrestling writer Sarah Hirsch believes The Miz must move to Tuesday nights to continue the brooding feud with Bryan as a matter of common sense. I love the idea as well, having these two rekindle a flickering flame. But the money in Reigns-Bryan is epic. After WrestleMania 34 and all the dust clears, WWE will have a decision to make. Will the company leave Bryan on SmackDown Live, feuding with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, or will there be major changes to both Monday and Tuesday night rosters? Reigns will forge forward with a program possibly involving Braun Strowman. I’d like to pull the layers apart on a feud with Bryan, which instantly makes Monday nights “must see” television. It also helps Bryan re-establish himself as a top star in the company. The discussion of Samoan identity in the context of sport has examined Maori identity and masculinity in New Zealand, among other topics, but there has yet to be work which considers Samoans within professional wrestling. This research investigates Samoan identity through a content analysis of televised wrestling matches. This research identifies six primary stereotypes under which Samoan identity is portrayed. These portrayals of Samoan characters, I argue, flatten the representation of this ethnic group within wrestling and culture at large. Keywords: Samoans, identity, representation, gimmicks Introduction Among the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. This research investigates the identity of Samoans within professional wrestling, and the different ways they are constructed and presented to audiences. “Gimmicks,” characters portrayed by a wrestler “resulting in the sum of fictional elements, attire and wrestling ability” (Oliva and Calleja 3) utilized by Samoans have run the gamut from the wild uncivilized savage, to the sumo (both in villainous Japanese and comically absurd iterations), to the ultra-cool mogul who wears silk shirts and fancy shoes. Their ability to cut promos, an important facet of the modern gimmick allowing wrestlers to address their opponents and storylines, varies widely as well, but all lie within their Samoan identity.

Honey, Master of Science Utah State University, 2020 Major Professor: Dr. Eric César Morales Program: American Studies This paper examines the shifting portrayals of Pacific Islanders in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) across three generations. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although 4 many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. The WWE originally presented Pacific Islanders using the most offensive stereotypes, and the first two generations of the Samoan Dynasty had to “play Indian” or cosign onto gross representations of their people to be recognized by American audiences unfamiliar with representations of Pacific Islanders.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend outside of podcast land. I just got back from a trip out West to Humptulips, Washington. Unfortunately, uh, I had to go and attend a family funeral. Uh, seems like every time you’re in the military or if you work away from your hometown- the only time you’re able to visit your hometown and your family and friends are funerals and weddings, which sucks-sucks a lot. Master of Arts (Sociology), May, 2021, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Professional wrestling is a sports entertainment form marketed to children in almost 200 countries and represents one of the last places to consume explicitly offensive mass media. Numerous qualitative studies allude to wrestling’s position as a hegemonic man- centric melodrama by taking a micro approach and following a single wrestler to show that wrestling is a bigoted entertainment form. Alternatively, quantitative studies indicated race/ethnicity has some impact on a wrestler’s status in the business when comparing wins and losses. However, not all wins and losses are the same and how one wins a match complicates what appears, at first, to be a simple victory by the dominant wrestler. I conducted a content analysis which observed the type and nature of the end of every men’s match (n=819) held at World Wrestling Entertainment’s major events from 2014-2020 (n=98).
