Loud Excerpt More information Introduction The kingdom of Sicily was created by the coronation of its first ruler, the former Count Roger II of Sicily, in Palermo cathedral on Christmas Day 1130. The kingdom that was born then lasted, despite many vicissitudes, and even some lengthy periods of division, until the creation of modern Italy in 1860. The papal bull that sanctioned the creation of this new kingdom recorded that this was proper since God had granted Roger ‘greater wisdom and power’ than other princes, and in recognition of the 1 loyal service to the papacy of his parents and himself. The pope, Anacletus II, was obviously seeking justification for his action, and the reasons for such a grant were in fact considerably more complex, and will be discussed in a later part of this book (below, chapter 3). Yet as Roger’s own con- temporary biographer noted, without mentioning the papal role in the conferment of the new royal title at all, it was appropriate that one who ‘ruled so many provinces, Sicily, Calabria and Apulia and other regions stretching almost to Rome, ...ought to be distinguished by the honour of kingship’.     Dear Friends of Meredith Travel, I just spent a most enjoyable morning. In preparation for writing this letter about our September 25-October 7, 2018, tour of Sicily, I reviewed my photographs from the trip I made there this past summer. I simply can’t wait to go back! Betty describes southern Italy as Italy to the 3rd power—older, grander, and more richly complex. Sicily, we agree, is Italy to the 10th power, at least. It was, by far, the most exotic version of our favorite country that I have yet to encounter, made so by its location and history, which includes a dizzying mix of cultures. It was Greek far longer than it has been Italian. It was Arab. Norman. Swabian. Aragonese. Austrian. Even Bourbon French! All left their mark. And finally, and relatively recently (1860), the Risorgimento fought it into being part of unified Italy. The food, the architecture, and customs can best be understood by experiencing them all firsthand, so without further ado, I would like to summarize our itinerary for you. Join me now as we vicariously tour Sicily together. Day 1: Sept. 25 (Tues) Departure. We depart the U.S. to arrive the next day in Palermo, the capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Day 2: Sept. 26 (Wed) Palermo. Palermo is a city of 700,000, by far the largest on the island, with an ancient historic city center with structures representing the panorama of its past. After a quick driving tour to orient us to the city, we stop, drop bags at the hotel, and head out to see perhaps the most perfect medieval buildings in the world, the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel, the latter known for its extraordinary mosaics designed in such a way that the aesthetics of the Arab, Jewish, and Norman artisans are all incorporated.

A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry ii Abstract Sicily was made the first overseas Roman province between 241 and 212 BC, and became known as the ‘bread-basket’ of the Republic due to the island’s famously fertile farmlands. The island, with its history of pre-Roman conflict, second century slave revolts, and use as a military stronghold in the civil wars of the first century, never dissociated itself from conflict. As such, its construction as a ‘contested space’ was popular in the literature of first-century Rome, employed as a symptomatic topos of the state of Rome – the closer Roman Sicily resembled its pre- annexation state, the greater the perceived threat to the Republic, and vice-versa. This construction of Sicily and its landscape was employed by authors such as Cicero, Diodorus Siculus, and Virgil to great effect, as they engaged with, reinforced, or challenged the major contemporary discourses of imperialism, the impact of civil war, and food security. Cicero’s In Verrem presents its audience with a Sicily that has been purposely constructed to deliver the most damning image of Verres, the infamously corrupt governor of Sicily from 73-71, the most sympathetic and familiar image of the Sicilians, presented as virtuous and stoic farmers, and a Sicily that has been reduced to a war-torn desert under Verres’ rule. Through his construction of Sicily as contested space, Cicero secured his win against Verres in court and demonstrated to his audiences the danger Verres’ actions presented Rome, threatening the stability of the relationship between Sicily and Rome.

Dumbarton Oaks Fieldwork sponsored this project. The materials document in detail mosaics and other architectural aspects from several buildings in Sicily. The collection contains photographic negatives and oversize drawings from Capella Palatina, Cefalù, Martorana, Monreale, and other sites. HISTORICAL NOTE Ernst Kitzinger was born on December 27, 1912 in Munich and died on January 22, 2003 in Poughkeepsie, NY. He received his PhD, summa cum laude, from the University of Munich in 1934 under the direction of Wilhelm Pinder. He completed his dissertation entitled Roman Painting from the early seventh to mid-eight century1 where he discussed the influence of Byzantine art on the early stages of medieval Roman artistic production. In the same year, Kitzinger moved to England, where he worked at the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiques at the British Musum, and in 1937, he published Early Medieval Art at the British Museum.2 He eventually migrated to the United States in 1941, and “he had been created Director of Studies [at Dumbarton Oaks], a post that he held with great distinction from 1955 until 19663. From 1950 to 1951, Kitzinger was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship during his tenure as an Assistant Professor of Byzantine Art and Archaeology at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection (Dumbarton Oaks).
