Volume 1 from Servants to Staff: the Making of a Modern Estate Volume 1 From Servants to Staff: The Making of a Modern Estate Chatsworth 1908-1950 By: Fiona Clapperton A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts & Humanities School of English & Department of History This Work Was Supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (grant number AH/M007316/1) February 2019 2 Abstract Taking as its subject the estate of Chatsworth, in rural Derbyshire, this thesis addresses the question of how the history of the country estate can be understood, not from the perspective of a single social group, but in relation to the whole community who lived, worked and interacted within its boundaries. Structurally, the thesis is comprised of four thematically organised chapters. Each focuses upon a different subset of the estate community and draws upon different kinds of archival material. Each chapter also adopts a distinct methodological approach in response to the source material under scrutiny. In particular, the thesis pays attention to analytical tools developed within the field of historical pragmatics. I argue that this innovative, multi-methodological approach enables a holistic understanding of archival sources to emerge. The thesis finds that, while demographic mapping provides one level of insight, the information contained within letters and memoirs can be crucial for understanding the social norms and interpersonal relationships which made up the framework underpinning the estate community. In particular, it draws upon a variety of documents from the records of Chatsworth’s senior employees, who occupied an important mediatory role within the estate hierarchy. The records of these servants provide a unique insight into how estates such as Chatsworth functioned as social organisms. They offer access to the experiences of the lower-ranking individuals inhabiting the estate, which are unlikely to have been recorded elsewhere, whilst also providing a new vantage point from which to observe the social and professional obligations placed upon the estate’s upper-class landowners. 3 Acknowledgements I would not have been able to write this thesis without the generous assistance of several people. The well arranged gardens attached, give an additional charm to this interesting village of rural beauty; every thing tends to show his Grace’s taste, good feeling, and liberal disposition towards those in humble circumstances. The township contains 2255A. 3R. 25P. of land, and in 1851 had 60 houses and 346 inhabitants, of whom 160 were males and 186 females; rateable value £2598 2s. 6d. His Grace the Duke of Devonshire is sole owner. The Church, dedicated to St. Peter, is situated in the centre of the village on elevated ground, and is approached by a flight of steps. It is a venerable stone edifice, with nave, chancel. side aisles, and square tower containing 4 bells. It was given at an early period by Fulcher, ancestor of the Shirleys, to the monastery of Rochester, in Staffordshire. In the chancel is a very elegant monument to the first Earl of Devonshire, which is composed of several figures the size of life sculptured in relief, and of the most elaborate workmanship. A table monument has two recumbent figures, one clothed in the dress of the times, the other representing a skeleton. “ There is something,” says Mr. Rhodes, “strikingly impressive in this representation of a man who appears to have just passed from time into eternity, with all the habiliments of life about him, and the bare ribbed image of Death, which lies at his side, awfully intimating the transition that must soon be made.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Loughborough University Institutional Repository John Gibson and the Anglo-Italian Sculpture Market in Rome: Letters, Sketches and Marble Alison Yarrington Tate Papers no.29 John Gibson established a hugely successful sculpture studio in Rome, and despite strong reasons to return to London, such as the cholera outbreaks in Rome in the 1830s, he remained steadfast in his allegiance to the city. His status and success in this intensely competitive environment was promoted through a sympathetic engagement with a wide variety of friends, fellow sculptors and patrons. This paper explores this method of engagement, notably through Gibson’s works for and correspondence with the 6th Duke of Devonshire. There is no place in Europe like Rome for the number of artists of different nations, there is no place where there is so much ambition of who shall produce the finest works – this concentration for fame keeps up the art and good taste. Here art is not a money making trade. You should make an effort to come here and we would go to the Vatican together.1 When John Gibson penned this letter to his friend and former fellow pupil John Barber Crouchley in early May 1837, his primary place of residence and the centre of his sculptural practice was firmly established in Rome, with his career on a firm upward trajectory towards success and recognition. By contrast, Crouchley, who had been prevented by his father from travelling abroad with Gibson when he left Liverpool in 1817, saw his ambitions as a sculptor subsequently fade.

    Introduction beware then how you chuse, for your first preference makes your destiny Emma; or, The Unfortunate Attachment WHEN GEORGIANA SPENCER MARRIED the duke of Devonshire on June 4, 1774,1 she fulfilled her mother’s greatest hope and fear. “My dread is that she will be snatched from me before her age and experience make her by any means fit for the serious duties of a wife, a mother, or the mistress of a family,” her mother wrote in January 1774 (Masters 12). Despite her belief that she was facilitating a love-match, Lady Spencer’s prophecy proved correct. “Lady Georgiana’s marriage was one de convenance,” her niece Lady Caroline Lamb wrote with typical hyper- bole. “Her delight was hunting butterflies. The housekeeper breaking a lath over her head reconciled her to the match. She was ignorant of every- thing.”2 In fact, Lady Georgiana received an “exemplary education”3 from her mother. She was a proficient musician, poet, and writer who knew her future husband as early as 1765 and 1766, for he visited Althorp House on frequent occasions (Masters 12). The difference between Lady Georgiana and her husband is perhaps best shown by a perfunctory note the duke wrote shortly after their marriage. “I am going to sup in St. James’s Place and have sent you the carriage that you may come in it if you like it.” On the back, Lady Georgiana allowed her high spirits to overflow in verse.     RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSHIRE 1830·1850 Alan Frank Jones Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Sheffield January 2004 ii Alan Frank Jones RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSlllRE 1830-1850 ABSTRACT Social protest, especially in agricultural regions, has occupie~ and caused considerable debate among, historians for many years. This thesis seeks to add to this debate, by looking at various forms of protest in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. This thesis examines three aspects of criminal activity: poaching, arson and animal maiming. It contends that none of these crimes can simply be categorised as acts of protest. In conjunction with an investigation of these three crimes, acts of protest such as strikes and episodes of reluctance to conform are also discussed. It argues that the motives behind various criminal activities and anti-authority behaviour were varied and complex. Arson and animal maiming were rarely co-ordinated, mostly they were individual attacks. However, on a few occasions both arson and animal maiming were directed against certain people. In the instances of poaching, there were more proven cases of gang participation than in either arson or animal maiming, with groups of men raiding game preserves. However, the great majority of raids were individual undertakings. What is more, poaching was carried out on a greater scale throughout the county than either arson or animal maiming. This thesis seeks to put these activities into the context of economic and social change in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. It maintains that there was a breaking down of the old social order.
