it has long been rumored that the ghost of the fam ous attorney, Temple Houston,

roam s, the buildings Located at 810 a n d 812 Main street in woodward , O k la h o m a .

A c c o r d in g to le g e n d , A t t o r n e y Temple Houston’s s p i r i t never went to rest because o f a love

affair he had with the Local m a d a m of the n ight, 'Dolly keezer. Mr. Houston haunts on e s id e

of M ain street in woodward, and M istress Dolly haunts the opposite side. There have

actually been photographs taken of M istress Dolly standing at the w in d o w

atop the old building.

i worked at Maurice's a s a n a s s i s t a n t m a n a g e r . The store was

located at 810 M a in street. Next door at 2 1 2 M ain street was a candy store w ith a n

upstairs. This Is where we s to r e d o u r s to r e f ix tu r e s , we w ere well aware of the rum ors about

Mr. Houston, and none of us ever w ent to the upstairs a lo n e . I however, was nonbeliever, a n d

whew we weeded some fixtures during a remodeling, i didn't think twice about g o in g over

a lo n e a n d getting what we n eed e d .

A s i e n te re d the store, i told the storeowner that i was going up to get some thin g s. she

g a v e me a shocked look and asked where m y backup was. i rep lied that i w asn't afraid and jokingly said that If i w asn’t down In -five m inutes to sen d help, she wished m e l u c k a n d

41 c o u n t e r e d with 'you. w o u l d n ' t catch me up there alone." i didn't believe in ghosts, it was a l l a

b u n c h of nonsense, and i w a s w e l l o n m y w a y .

i w e n t u p th e crooked old wooden stairs, it was obvious that the upstairs of the old

building had not been updated since it was built. As i topped the stairs, i could barely see

down the long dark hallway. The only lighting came from a single light bulb that dangled

from an old electrical c o r d at the opposite e n d o f the hallw ay. The air was stagnant as If It

had not been circulated in decades, i walked down the hall to an open door on m y left, it w a s

th e r o o m that housed our fixtures, i didn't give a s e c o n d thought to what i was doing. i

walked in the door and started across the r o o m . Then i was met with a fo r c e that took m y

breath an d stopped me dead in m y tracks, it was at that m o m e n t i kwew i had m et up with

the spirit of Mr. Houston. i calm ly said, "i a m here to get some fixtures for the store.' i began

w alking again slowly toward the fixtures, i c o u l d f e e l breathing on the back of m y n e c k

a n d a cold feeling raced down m y arm s as if he was telling m e to turn and go away, i

r e a c h e d the fixtures, picked up w hat i needed, and turned towards the door, i said, 'This Is all

i need, i will be going.' As I walked back across the room, m y heart started to race, i c o u l d

feel the spirit pushing against m y back, i walked faster. Ju st as i r e a c h e d the door an d

e n t e r e d the hall, a cold sensation started at m y feet and climbed up the back of m y body, i

d i d n ' t look back, i kept on m y journey toward the staircase, i went down the stairs twice as

f a s t a s i had come up them. M y legs were like noodles, an d i felt like the blood had been

sucked out of m y body. I had to sit down to catch m y breath. After gathering m y s e l f , I

realized th at i had become a believer, a n d that i would never go upstairs alone ever again.
