Toward an 82% renewable energy heating network in Champs-sur-: CAPVM and ENGIE Solutions announce successful completion of the geothermal drilling

The Communauté d’Agglomération –Vallée de la Marne conurbation (CAPVM) and ENGIE Solutions, through its subsidiary GéoMarne, have announced the successful completion of the strategic phase of the geothermal drilling in Champs-sur-Marne, which started at the beginning of December. Objective: to drill to a depth of 1,600m to reach groundwater that will provide, in the future, 100% green heating to the equivalent of 10,000 housing units in Champs-sur-Marne and (77).

A local, green heating supply for customers After three months of works right in the centre of the Cité Descartes in Champs-sur-Marne, the GéoMarne teams have successfully completed two deviated boreholes 1,900m deep in the Dogger*. The ENGIE Solutions subsidiary is now able to assess the flow and temperature of the geothermal resource: the groundwater measures 70°C and will be drawn at a flow rate of 350m3/h, parameters that are in line with the prior studies conducted by ENGIE Solutions’ geoscience experts. Set up in just eight months, the drilling works required all the geothermal expertise of the ENGIE Group and its network of partners to help meet the deadlines and deliver a high quality project. These innovative boreholes were fitted with pipes with smooth connections in order to increase the production parameters of the wells. The completion of the drilling and the conclusive tests carried out since mean that, in the next few weeks, work can start to build the network and develop the supply substations to connect the district heating network’s future customers. Work will also start in 2020 to construct the geothermal plant and install its equipment in order to be able to start supplying heating by the end of 2021.

A regional project supported by ADEME and the Ile-de- region The investment in the district heating network, which derives 82% of its heat from geothermal energy, amounts to €40 million. The Ile-de-France region is supporting the project with €4 million, 10% of the investment, transferred entirely for the benefit of the network’s customers who will enjoy lower heating prices. This support is part of the implementation of the regional energy-climate strategy which has taken an ambitious route by setting a target of increasing its deep-geothermal renewable energy production by 3.5 times the 2015 figure. Under the heat fund programme, ADEME is providing this virtuous project with support worth €6 million, thereby contributing to the development of deep geothermal energy in eastern Paris. The completion of the works also marks the closure of the crowdfunding for the GéoMarne project. Local citizens, and residents of the wider Ile-de-France region, could participate in the project, which is a fundamental part of the transition to a more virtuous energy mix. The system on the Lumo crowdfunding platform was opened in three phases: first to the citizens of Noisiel and Champs-sur-Marne, then to all CAPVM citizens and lastly, to Ile-de-France. This crowdfunding achieved its threshold of €1 million at the beginning of February. As part of this approach to open up the project to citizens, more than 400 visitors (local residents, representatives of co-ownership properties, lessors, partners, etc.) also had the opportunity to visit the drilling site and meet the various people involved: the drillers, the drill fluid teams, geologists, deviators. Through GéoMarne, the ENGIE Solutions teams are helping CAPVM develop geothermal energy so that it can establish a more sustainable energy mix. The company owned by ENGIE Group, a world leader in low-carbon energy and services, is positioned as a partner of choice in the energy transformation of cities by helping them convert their district heating networks to a more virtuous model. ENGIE Solutions has invested more than €200 million in the sector in 6 years and has carried out 15 geothermal drilling projects in that period. This initiative is in line with ENGIE Solution’s commitment to support its customers in the zero-carbon transition by helping them to optimise the use of resources and green energies.

*Groundwater with a temperature of between 50 and 95 °C

Key figures:

• Deep geothermal well, drilled to 1,900 m • €40 million of investment, of which €4 million from the Ile-de-France region and €6 million from ADEME • Heat supply for the equivalent of 10,000 housing units in Champs-sur-Marne and Noisiel • 19 km of heating network • 82% renewable energy • Environmental impact: -25 000 TCO2/year, the equivalent of 17,000 vehicles per year.

About GéoMarne GéoMarne (local subsidiary of ENGIE Solutions) is the company dedicated to the construction and operation of the geothermal district heating network in Champs-sur-Marne and Noisiel.

About CAPVM Created on 1 January 2016, the Paris–Vallée de la Marne conurbation authority is located in the east of the Grand . It comprises 12 municipalities: Brou-sur-Chantereine, , Champs-sur-Marne, Chelles, Croissy-Beaubourg, Émerainville, Noisiel, , Pontault-Combault, Roissy-en-Brie, Torcy, and Vaires-sur-Marne. More than 228,800 people live in the region which covers an area of nearly 96 km2. The conurbation authority carries out a number of initiatives for the benefit of its citizens. Its diverse fields of action range from economic development to the reception of travellers, environmental protection and sanitation. It builds, develops and maintains community cultural and sports facilities, including 5 aquatic parks, 14 multimedia libraries and 9 conservatories. About the region Faced with the urgent climate issue and air pollution, the region has committed to an ambitious energy transition by financing all alternatives to fossil fuels in Ile-de-France, including of course deep- geothermal energy. The regional ambition is to increase deep-geothermal heat production for district heating networks by 3.5 times by 2030 by financing projects to create doublet geothermal systems, extend district heating networks and connect buildings. In total, nearly €30 million have been dedicated to this sector since 2016.
