Greetings, It is my privilege to welcome you to our 8th Annual Ohio Diversity and Leadership Conference. Since the inception of the Ohio Diversity and Leadership Conference, we have made great strides in fostering an environment for diversity and inclusion. However, there is still much more to be done. In order to remain competitive in today’s global economy, organizations must be innovative and creative. Through the promotion of diversity we will foster an environment for organizations to grow and leverage their knowledge of diversity best practices. Our two-day conference will afford organizations the opportunity to explore tools and resources necessary to build diverse workforces and remain competitive on the global stage. The event will also provide a valuable opportunity for individuals to network together and grow in their knowledge of diversity and leadership. Gene Smith Athletic Director,

Gene Smith is in his 11th year as director of athletics at The Ohio State University. He was promoted to vice-president and director of athletics in January of 2014. He is widely recognized among the leaders of his profession and has been named “one of Vice President the most powerful people in collegiate sport.” Smith was named the Buckeyes’ director of athletics March 5, 2005. Smith is the & Regional Diversity eighth person to hold the athletics director position at Ohio State and the first African-American to do so. He previously served Officer – Midwest Region, as director of athletics at Arizona State, Iowa State and Eastern Michigan universities and is entering his 31st year in the role. Morgan Stanley At Ohio State, the 59-year old Smith oversees the nation’s most comprehensive and one of its most successful collegiate athletics programs. The department sponsors 36 fully-funded varsity sports with more than 1,000 student-athletes regularly competing for Big Ten Conference and NCAA championships. Smith has additional oversight responsibility for a recently created Business Advancement Division of Ohio State which includes: Schottenstein Center, Nationwide Arena, Blackwell Hotel, Drake Union, Fawcett Center, and Trademark & Licensing. Smith’s business acumen has fostered collaboration and optimized revenue opportunities within each entity to ensure profitability. The athletics department is completely self-supporting; it receives no university funds, tax dollars or student fees. In fiscal year 2014-15, the department transferred nearly $37.5 million in assessments to the university, including more than $17.4 million in grant-in-aid reimbursement.

As a highly-recruited student-athlete and member of national championship teams as a college athlete and coach, Smith is passionate about the well-being of student-athletes and the championship experience. Under Smith’s leadership, the Ohio State athletics department has thrived, winning myriad conference and national, individual and team, athletic championships and awards. In 2014-15, Ohio State won five team national championships. Football won the Big Ten Conference championship game; the Sugar Bowl; and the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship. Wrestling, pistol, synchronized swimming and rowing won national championships. When Smith arrived, the overall student-athlete FED graduation rate was 65 percent. It is now 75 percent, with over 50 percent of student-athletes maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or better. Smith’s focus on academics - higher individual and team goals, additional academic support services, and recognition of excellence - has shifted the department’s culture to reflect his philosophical focus on the total student-athlete. In terms of the NCAA Graduation Success Rate improvement, all Ohio State student-athletes had a GSR of 80 percent in 2005-2006. That has increased to 89 percent for 2014-15. Over that same time frame, the GSR for football improved from 55 to 81 percent.

Currently, Smith serves on the newly constituted NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee (2015-18). Smith is past president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was that organization’s first African- American president. www.diversityfirstjobs.com

Mary H. Boosalis Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Office, Premier Health Since January 2011, Mary H. Boosalis has served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Office of Premier Health. Prior to her current role, Mary served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Miami Valley Hospital following 20 years as a senior leader at the Dayton area’s largest hospital. Premier Health is the largest health system in southwest Ohio and offers a wide array of health care services. The mission of the health system is to build healthier communities. There are four hospitals including Miami Valley Hospital, with an additional site at Miami Valley Hospital South; Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton; Atrium Medical Center; and Upper Valley Medical Center. Kastner is a partner in Taft’s Columbus office, where she is chair of the Health and Life Sciences practice group. Stella Keane, SPHR Vice President, Talent Management, Big Lots, Inc. Stella Keane is Vice President, Talent Management for Big Lots, Inc., a publicly traded company with annual revenues exceeding $5 billion. The company operates approximately 1,500 Big Lots stores in 48 states. Big Lots offers consumers a wide range of value-priced merchandise, including brand name closeouts, seasonal products, food, furniture, housewares, toys and gifts. Keane joined big Lots in 2012 and is responsible for Talent Acquisition and Talent Development, including training, organizational development and change management. She brings twenty years of retail Human Resources experience to her position, managing best in class strategies and programs surrounding High Potential Programs, Talent Readiness, Succession Planning, Management and Leadership Development, and Cultural Engagement. Prior to joining Big Lots, she was Director of Talent Development at Foot Locker, Inc. where she held several positions with increasing levels of responsibility, including an expatriate assignment for Foot Locker, Europe. During her tenure, she oversaw numerous initiatives, including implementation of the company’s global Applicant Tracking System, Talent Management System, and annual competency Executive Development Review. Verma Partner, BakerHostetler Monica Verma leads BakerHostetler’s national Information Technology and Transaction team and focuses her practice on assisting clients with technology and outsourcing transactions. Licensed to practice in Ohio and in India, over the last 18 years, she has launched her career on two continents. Ms. Verma handles high net worth Information Technology and Business Process outsourcing transactions (both onshore and offshore) with executive level visibility and participation, and with substantial impact on her clients’ revenues and stock prices. She handles all aspects of such transactions, including review and management of the RFP process, draf ting, and negotiations of outsourcing agreements and statement of works. Ms. Verma’s experience relating to outsourcing transactions spans a wide range of industries, including financial services, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, management consulting/professional services, and computer technology. Due to her background and experience with India and its laws, she is able to help clients bridge cross-border differences in business and social culture, language, geopolitical risk, and dispute resolution processes in order to achieve successful outcomes when dealing with cross border outsourcing transactions. Ms. Verma routinely handles negotiation of cloud computing and Software as a Service (SaaS) agreement, with a particular focus on issues that are uniquely critical in this context, including availability and backup of data, disaster recovery plans, service levels, data security and confidentiality concerns, and issues relating to access, use, and storage of personally identifiable information. In addition, she works with clients in structuring and negotiating contracts with third party service agreements, such as hosting agreements, software development agreements, colocation agreements, hardware and software support, and maintenance agreements, that are needed to run a company’s IT infrastructure. Kathy was a supporter of Mount Carmel long before she was an employee. She was a trustee on the Mount Carmel Foundation board, and the first African American member of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing Board of Trustees.
