Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada and Bhakti Svarupa Damodara Swami Srila Sripada Introducion Introduction A guru is one who disseminates transcendental knowledge among his disciples with reference to distinction of matter, spirit and Supreme Spirit, Godhead. Many teachers have tried to be gurus, but not all of them could become a guru for want of necessary qualification. To be a guru, one must be able to protect his disciples from falling down into the repeated cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease by associating the disciple with God in yoga. Guru teaches mainstream yoga practices, given in the scriptures, which unites the disciple with the Supreme Lord. A Guru does not manifest magic, gold, siddhis. He neither watch TV serials nor digital movies, and certainly does none of the prohibited acts viz. eat betel nuts, smoke ganja, and travel for amusement, eat meat, drink alcohol, has close association with females, nor gamble. He cannot be identified from a long beard and curly long hair with golden turban, a clever disguise to attract the followers. The goal of a guru is not to render dry social services in the form of hospitals and schools unless it is strongly connected to the Supreme Lord Krishna. He does not wear gold and diamond ornaments on his body, does not dance with his female disciples. -

They suggest that if one is ‘pure’ enough and knows how to listen one experiences the syneasthetic level of sound called pashyanti. At this level, one can reach beyond the duality of the ‘hidden and manifested’ worlds, the external and internal levels of sound; and one can ultimately see God face to face. This is also considered a level at which one can realise that the sound of God’s name and God himself are the same. I will focus on how the devotees learn to create this sense of intimacy with God through the sound of his holy name, and argue that listening is not merely a process connected to our auditory sense but rather a creative and engaging activity, a skill that one can develop. MEDITATION AS DEVOTIONAL PRACTICE IN JĪVA GOSVĀMIN’S PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Barbara A. Holdrege In the philosophy of education articulated by Jīva Gosvāmin in the Kṛṣṇa Sandarbha and Bhakti Sandarbha, he emphasises the critical importance of incorporating internal meditative practices alongside external bodily prac- tices in the training of the sādhaka in the advanced phases of rāgānugā- bhakti. The role of meditation in Jīva’s philosophy of education is par- ticularly evident in his discussion of Vraja-dhāman, Kṛṣṇa’s abode, in the Kṛṣṇa Sandarbha, in which he maintains that while the earthly Vraja can be engaged with the material senses through bodily practices such as pilgrimage, the transcendent Vraja-dhāman, Goloka-Vṛndāvana, is beyond the material senses (atīndriya) and can only be apprehended through direct experience (anubhava) attained by means of meditation. Although Goloka-Vṛndāvana is not visible to the material eye (carma-cakṣus), it can be ‘seen’ (root dṛś) through direct visionary experience (sākṣāt-kāra or sākṣāt-darśana). Jīva invokes the authority of Vyāsa and the other sages who, while immersed in samādhi beyond the material realm of prakṛti in the depths of medita- tion, attained a direct cognition of Gopāla Kṛṣṇa in his transcendent Vraja- dhāman and then recorded their cognitions in the śāstras.¹ He declares the direct experiences of the sages (vidvad-anubhava) to be the ‘crest-jewel of all pramāṇas’ in that the records of their experiences preserved in the śāstras are authoritative testimonies of valid knowledge for future generations.² He claims, moreover, that these experiences are not the exclusive prerogative of the sages of the past but can be attained ‘even today’ by advanced prac- titioners of rāgānugā-bhakti who incorporate meditation into their regimen of sādhana-bhakti as a form of devotional practice.³ ¹ Kṛṣṇa Sandarbha 106, 115, 116, 15⒊ ² Kṛṣṇa Sandarbha 1⒖ ³ Kṛṣṇa Sandarbha 10⒍ ISKCON Studies Journal, Vol. -

Tantrism is non-dualistic as it holds the existence of one Reality, the Consciousness. This one Reality, the consciousness, is manifesting itself in the various forms of knower and known. According to Tantrism the whole world of manifestation is manifesting out of itself (consciousness) and is mainfesting in itself. The whole process of creation and dissolution occurs within the nature of consciousness. In the same way he has propounded Rasadvaita Darsana, the Non-dualistic Philosophy of Aesthetics. The Rasa, the aesthetic experience, lies in the conscious ness, is experienced by the consciousness and in a way it itself is experiencing state of consciousness: As in Tantric metaphysics, one Tattva, Siva, manifests itself in the forms of other tattvas, so the one Rasa, the Santa rasa, assumes the forms of other rasas and finally dissolves in itself. Tantrism is Absolute idealism in its world-view and epistemology. -

Course Description and Objectives: The Vedanta, or Brahma, Sutras has emerged as the most important of the six schools of Indian philosophy, and, indeed, has almost become synonymous with Hindu philosophy. Written in order to clarify the sometimes abstruse statements of the Upanisads, the oldest philosophical texts in Hinduism, the cryptic nature of the Vedanta Sutras in turn produced a number of distinct streams of commentarial interpretation. This course will attempt an overview of the main schools of Vedantic thought up to the medieval period -- Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka, Vallabha and Baladeva. Attention will be paid to some of the prominent points of agreement as well as contestation amongst some of these schools. Course Prerequisites: None (but some prior knowledge of Hindu philosophy recommended). Course Requirement: Class attendance and participation (10% of the final grade); a mid term exam (25% of the final grade each); a final exam (25% of the final grade), an 8- 10 page paper (40% of the grade). A one page discussion paper is due each week for each Gita chapter responding to a given question on that chapter reflecting a thorough reading of the material (late papers will be penalized). In addition to this, students will be assigned class presentations on the readings, and their attendance record and overall performance in class along with the response papers will factor into the remaining 10% of the grade.
