Fall 08 2013 Children’s Services in Fingal: A Profile of the Services provided by Statutory, Community and Voluntary Sector Organisations to Children and Families Report for Fingal Children’s Services Committee Author: Niall Watters & Associates, Research & Consultancy Services www.niallwattersresearch.ie August 2013 Acknowledgements Like most, if not all, research activities culminating in a report such as this, the process was a collaborative undertaking carried out over the course of a number of months. While the researcher undertook the field and analytical research and subsequently authored the report, this was in no little way supported and driven by the Information Sub Group of Fingal Children’s Services Committee (FCSC) to whom thanks is due. The members of this group are: - Conor Ryan, Research and Evaluation Officer, Blanchardstown Area Partnership (Chairperson of the Sub Group) - Peter Foran, Co-ordinator, Fingal Children's Services Committee and Senior Manager, Health Service Executive - Dr. Emma Clare, Senior Research and Development Officer, Health Service Executive - Tom Crean, Co-ordinator, Schools Completion Programme – Dublin 15 - Adrienne Streek, Development Officer, Fingal County Childcare Committee - Shauna Whelan, Youth Justice Worker, Baldoyle and Swords Youth Service - Seamus Tracy, Garda Juvenile Liaison Officer, An Garda Siochana - Margaret Joyce, Daughters of Charity - Breffni O’Rourke, Rapid Co-ordinator, Fingal County Council While this research - audit and mapping of children’s services in Fingal - was deemed by FCSC’s Information Sub Group through its analysis to be crucial to the continuing development and knowledge base of the Fingal CSC, it was facilitated ostensibly by the funding applied to and granted by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. The Department had initially recognised in its preparatory work on the establishment of the CSCs the need for such information to be identified and made available. Nonetheless, the award of funding by the Department was forward thinking given the pressure on Departmental budgets in the context of scarce public resources. On a personal basis, the researcher is particularly grateful to the Chairperson of the sub group, Conor Ryan, who along with Peter Foran Co-ordinator of the FCSC, drove the research along and provided valuable advice and direction. They were ably assisted at research overview meetings by Emma Clare and Adrienne Streek of the HSE and Fingal County Childcare Committee respectively. Thanks are also due to the considerable work undertaken by two TUS Workers: the first of whom painstakingly compiled the initial database of children’s services in Fingal and the second of whom that assisted in making numerous telephone calls to organisations and services on the database whose contact information was incorrect or partial. Finally, it is important to thank all those who completed surveys for the research (211 children’s services) and the almost thirty representatives of organisations who took part in the three regional focus groups. As with all research of this nature, it is the researcher alone who is responsible for the content of the report.
