American Kestrel, Falco sparverius Status: State: Threatened Federal: Not listed Identification The American kestrel is the smallest and most widely distributed falcon in North America (Smallwood & Bird 2002, Hawk Mountain n.d.). At first glance, kestrels are often confused with other small birds such as mourning doves because of their propensity to perch on utility lines (Hawk Mountain n.d.). Kestrels however, have larger more roundish heads and often tip or “bob” their tails while perched. In flight, kestrels have a diagnostic flight pattern of quickly alternating between rapid wing beating and gliding. With proper lighting, their colorful plumage can further aid in positive identification. Kestrels are both sexually dimorphic and dichromatic; therefore sexing can be done at a distance and in chicks as young as three weeks (Hawk Mountain n.d.). Males are on average 10% smaller than females though this may be hard to ascertain in the field (Hawk Mountain 1997, Smallwood & Bird 2002). Males are more colorful, with bluish- gray wings (with or without black barring) and rufous (reddish-brown) tails. A single black bar tipped in white extends across the terminal end of the largely unmarked tail. Females are rufous on their wings and tails, often with multiple black bars extending horizontally along the length (Hawk Male American Kestrel Mountain n.d.). Plumage is highly variable © Jim Gilbert among individuals (Smallwood & Bird 2002). Both sexes exhibit grayish crowns and rufous crown patches with two vertical black stripes down their white cheeks. Black “eyespots on the back of their heads are thought to aid in reducing predation on kestrels by larger birds of prey- giving the illusion of predator awareness. -

Wildlife of the North Hills: Birds, Animals, Butterflies Oakland, California 2005 About this Booklet The idea for this booklet grew out of a suggestion from Anne Seasons, President of the North Hills Phoenix Association, that I compile pictures of local birds in a form that could be made available to residents of the north hills. I expanded on that idea to include other local wildlife. For purposes of this booklet, the “North Hills” is defined as that area on the Berkeley/Oakland border bounded by Claremont Avenue on the north, Tunnel Road on the south, Grizzly Peak Blvd. on the east, and Domingo Avenue on the west. The species shown here are observed, heard or tracked with some regularity in this area. The lists are not a complete record of species found: more than 50 additional bird species have been observed here, smaller rodents were included without visual verification, and the compiler lacks the training to identify reptiles, bats or additional butterflies. We would like to include additional species: advice from local experts is welcome and will speed the process. A few of the species listed fall into the category of pests; but most - whether resident or visitor - are desirable additions to the neighborhood. We hope you will enjoy using this booklet to identify the wildlife you see around you. Phylogenetic signal was highly congruent and complementary between mtDNA and nuclear genes. In addition to single-nucleotide variation, shared deletions in nuclear introns supported one basal and two peripheral clades within the Aquilini. Monophyly of the Aquilini relative to other birds of prey was confirmed. However, all polytypic genera within the tribe, Spizaetus, Aquila, Hieraaetus, turned out to be non-monophyletic. Old World Spizaetus and Stephanoaetus together appear to be the sister group of the rest of the Aquilini. Spiza- stur melanoleucus and Oroaetus isidori axe nested among the New World Spizaetus species and should be merged with that genus. The Old World 'Spizaetus' species should be assigned to the genus Nisaetus (Hodgson, 1836). The sister species of the two spotted eagles (Aquila clanga and Aquila pomarina) is the African Long-crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis). -

Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) and Short-eared Owl (Asio fl ammeus) are widely dis- tributed but uncommon species during winter in Mexico. Information about their winter ecology is limited, particularly in areas where both species are present. Knowledge of their diet is an important component to understand the nocturnal raptors’ habitat requirements. We analyzed 179 pellets of Burrowing Owl and 354 pellets of Short-eared Owl collected in 2002-2003, at the Military Airbase of Zapopan, Jalisco. The owls shared three main prey categories: invertebrates, small mammals, and birds. Small mammals provided the highest proportion of biomass in the Short-eared Owl diet and invertebrates in the Burrowing Owl diet. Food-niche breadth was lower in Short-eared than in Burrowing Owl refl ecting the diversity of invertebrates in the Burrowing Owl’s diet. The dietary overlap included items of relative low mass such as Northern Pigmy Mouse (Baiomys taylori) and the Gray Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca nitiens). Zapopan Airbase is important for these two species and others adjacent to a large metropolitan city and should be managed as wildlife habitat that is compat- ible with its function for military training. -

My objective in this paper is to provide for the first time a delineation of species of North and Middle American Otus based on acquaintance with their biological traits in the field. Next I wish to show their racial convergence in concealing color patterns. Finally, I attempt to portray the dramatic geographic variation in those evanescent colors and patterns of fresh autumn plumage, in recently collected specimens (largely taken by myself). -

Abstract Marcot, Bruce G. 1995. Owls of old forests of the world. Gen. Tech. Rep. PNW- GTR-343. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. 64 p. A review of literature on habitat associations of owls of the world revealed that about 83 species of owls among 18 genera are known or suspected to be closely asso- ciated with old forests. Old forest is defined as old-growth or undisturbed forests, typically with dense canopies. The 83 owl species include 70 tropical and 13 tem- perate forms. Specific habitat associations have been studied for only 12 species (7 tropical and 5 temperate), whereas about 71 species (63 tropical and 8 temperate) remain mostly unstudied. Some 26 species (31 percent of all owls known or sus- pected to be associated with old forests in the tropics) are entirely or mostly restricted to tropical islands. Threats to old-forest owls, particularly the island forms, include conversion of old upland forests, use of pesticides, loss of riparian gallery forests, and loss of trees with cavities for nests or roosts. Conservation of old-forest owls should include (1) studies and inventories of habitat associations, particularly for little-studied tropical and insular species; (2) protection of specific, existing temperate and tropical old-forest tracts; and (3) studies to determine if reforestation and vege- tation manipulation can restore or maintain habitat conditions. An appendix describes vocalizations of all species of Strix and the related genus Ciccaba. Accipiters The northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) and the sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) are the Alaskan representatives of a group of hawks known as accipiters, with short, rounded wings (short in comparison with other hawks) and long tails. The third North American accipiter, the Cooper’s hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is not found in Alaska. Both native species are abundant in the state but not commonly seen, for they spend the majority of their time in wooded habitats. When they do venture out into the open, the accipiters can be recognized easily by their “several flaps and a glide” style of flight. General Description: Adult northern goshawks are bluish- gray on the back, wings, and tail, and pearly gray on the breast and underparts. The dark gray cap is accented by a light gray stripe above the red eye. Like most birds of prey, female goshawks are larger than males. A typical female is 25 inches (65 cm) long, has a wingspread of 45 inches (115 cm) and weighs 2¼ pounds (1020 g) while the average male is 19½ inches (50 cm) in length with a wingspread of 39 inches (100 cm) and weighs 2 pounds (880 g). Adult sharp-shinned hawks have gray backs, wings and tails (males tend to be bluish-gray, while females are browner) with white underparts barred heavily with brownish-orange. They also have red eyes but, unlike goshawks, have no eyestrip. A typical female weighs 6 ounces (170 g), is 13½ inches (35 cm) long with a wingspread of 25 inches (65 cm), while the average male weighs 3½ ounces (100 g), is 10 inches (25 cm) long and has a wingspread of 21 inches (55 cm). -

FACT SHEET Red-Tailed Hawk COOL FACTS: Scientifi c name: Buteo jamaicensis Average weight: female: 31-51ounces; male: 25-45 ounces Average length: female: 19-25 inches; male: 17-22 inches Average wing span: 44-52 inches both sexes (3.5- 4.5 feet) Did you know? Most common hawk in North America. PHYSIOLOGY This is one of the largest birds you will see in North America. Even though the female of the species is larger than the male, the biggest female’s weight is only about 3 pounds. The oldest know Red-Tailed Hawk was 28 years and 10 months old. This species is blocky and broad in shape. A whitish underbelly with a dark brown band formed by horizontal streaks in feather patterning is present in most colour variations. The red tail, which gives this species its name, is uniformly brick-red above and light buff-orange below. The beak is short and dark and in the hooked, raptor shape. The head can sometimes appear small in size against the thick body frame. They have relatively short, broad tails and thick, chunky wings. The legs and the feet of the Red- Tailed Hawk are all yellow. The cry of the Red-Tailed Hawk is a two to three second hoarse, rasping scream, described as kree- eee-ar. This cry is often described as sounding similar to a steam whistle. This hawk soars; fl apping its wings as little as possible to conserve energy. Active fl ight is slow and deliberate, with deep wing beats. When soaring or fl apping its wings, it typically travels from 32 to 64 km/hr, but when diving it may exceed 190 km/hr. -

PHILLIPS, JR. , AND ANDREW BUTLER Abstract - The Southeastern American Kestrel (Falco sparverius paulus), a non-migratory subspecies of the widespread American Kestrel, has declined to the point that it is listed as threatened in Florida, the state in which it is most common. We studied the nesting biology of Southeastern American Kestrels in 1999 and 2000 at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, in old-growth longleaf pine sa- vanna, a habitat type historically widely occupied by the kestrels. Most of the nest cavities we observed were in old-growth trees, both living and dead, and were originally excavated by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) and then enlarged by other woodpecker species. Nesting success was 70% in 1999 and 56% in 2000. In 1999, 67% of eggs survived to become fledglings in successful nests, as did 58% in 2000. Nests in live pines and snags were equally successful, and nest success was positively related to cavity height in 1999. Reduced nesting success in 2000 may have been related to severe drought conditions. High nesting concentrations of up to 4 pairs per km2 were observed. We suggest that stands of old-growth longleaf pine, with little or no hardwood midstory and a relatively high number of snags, inhabited by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, may constitute high quality habitat for Southeastern American Kestrels.
