201 The following kong-an is number nine from the Blue Cliff Records: When you have a clear mirror, the beautiful and the ugly reveal themselves. When you hold the legendary sword, you can kill or grant life, as the moment dictates. Chinese come, foreigners go: foreigners come, Chinese go. In death there is already life: in life there is already death. Now tell me, what can you do? Unless your eye can penetrate all barriers and your body is free to make any turn, you can’t do a thing. But what is this eye that can penetrate all barriers? What is this body that is free to make any turn? Read this kong-an and see: A monk asked Jo-ju, “What is Jo-ju?” Jo Ju answered, “ East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, North Gate.” Strange language. We usually think that when a man dies he is dead, and when he lives he is alive. But in this language, life is death, death is life. Where does life come from? Where does death go? Life and death are only thinking. You must go beyond life and death. That is infinite life. It is “like this.” “Like this” is Jo-Ju’s original face. Mountains are mountains, rivers are rivers: yellow is yellow, red is red. Jo-Ju’s teacher, Nam Chan, said that everyday mind is the Way. Everyday mind is the mind that cuts off all thinking. It is the same as a mirror: when the beautiful comes, it is beautiful: When the ugly comes, it is ugly. -

Prologue Before the division of heaven and earth there is only one, which is round: Universe has no name and appearance and the Light fills infinite time and space. There are no Good and Evil in intrinsic nature; The Holy and the Worldly are false names. In front of the door is the quiet and illuminated land. Spring has come, so grass grows. This world in which we live consists of a bright side and a dark side, the sky and the earth, a man and a woman. There is both good and bad. There is happiness and sadness. There are the blessed and the damned. It is time and space which control the Universe. We are here and we are gone. But contrary to what we think, though good and bad, life is what you make it. The universe is empty, but full. Infinity in time and an infinity in space which is definite. When we are feeling we are not thinking, just learning. All things that have appearances are transient. If we view all appearances as non-appearances, then we will see the true nature of all things. 801 February 27, 1978 Dear Soen Sa Nim, Welcome back to the East Coast. I hope that your health is good and you will soon visit the Shim Gum Do Temple. Mu Ryeom Su Nim said he would like to study Shim Gum Do and live with us in Boston. We would love him to come. He would be a very welcome and respected addition to our family. He told us that he would discuss the matter further with you when you returned. We await your decision. Respectfully, Maria Rowe (Sang Gwang) March 4, 1978 Dear Sang Gwang Rowe Sa Bom, Thank you for your letter. How are you? You talked about Mu Ryeom Su Nim. That is wonderful. I talked about his going to Shim Gum Do School with him. Zen is keeping your correct situation moment to moment. Then, you will understand the correct way and the truth. Mu Ryeom Su Nim is a monk. A monk has a monk’s situation. He became a monk only one year ago, so we say he is a baby monk. Baby monks don’t understand monk’s situation, monk’s rules, monk’s job. This is very important. Then, after, coming and going everywhere is no problem. But now Mu Ryeom Su Nim is a baby monk, so living with monks and correct style strong practicing is very important. I did not talk about coming and going. I only talked to him about what is correct monk’s situation. Then he heard this and decided. So, you ask him. Next, I will talk a little to you about the Shim Gum Do Zen Center. -
Buddhist Music Review, 1998
Buddhism's twentyfive hundred year history has found this tradition living in the heart of many Eastern cultures in how these cultures express wisdom and compassion through chant and instrumental interpretations. With the increasing interest in the philosophy and practice of Buddhism in the West, this important collection of Buddhist chants and music opens a whole new horizon for practitioners and students of this tradition. In this collection, we can hear the humid sounds of Vietnam in the chanting of teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. And we also touch the robust strength of Korea's rugged mountains in the chanting of Zen Master Seung Sahn. The Tendai chants remind us of the Gregorian tradition where there is an absence of harmony and a presence of the community in unison. The haunting sound of the shakuhachi reminds us of the stark and beautiful simplicity of Japanese Zen practice. Included also are chants and instrumentals by Buddhist practitioners from Sri Lanka, Tibet, and China. In this way, we have here a wealth of Buddhist chant and music that reflects the profoundly rich cultural interpretations of a vision and practice that arose in India over two millenia ago. Interestingly enough, music is an integral part of Buddhist practice. I know of no school of Buddhism that does not include music as an integral element of the tradition. However, this is not music as we know it. Buddhist chant and percussion practice in particular is created for the purpose of inducing meditative states of consciousness. Obviously from this collection, we see that we are talking about differing states of meditation, from the rich visualization-based practices of meditation of the Tibetans who use overtone chanting and resounding symbols, horns, and drums, to the gentle and rather sweetish tones of Vietnamese Buddhism where lovingkindness is emphasized. -

Revista de Estudos da Religião Nº 1 / 2001 / pp. 57-72 ISSN 1677-1222 Being Zen-Buddhist in the Land of Catholicism Cristina Moreira da Rocha Introduction In this century, the West saw a fast expansion of Buddhism, which until then had been confined to the East. (Dumoulin, 1992: viii) With Buddhism, we see a radically different way of thinking and seeing the world because it is based on the absence of God and in the idea that everybody is his own Buddha. Through the practice of meditation, discipline or devotion (depending on the Buddhist school), anyone may get enlightened and become a Buddha (literally "an enlightened being"). Moreover, for Buddhism men and nature are part of the same whole. Nature was not created to serve men as dictates the Christianity. These elements - the possibility of individual enlightenment, of liberating mind and of union with nature - had a big appeal and opened the doors for Buddhism to arrive and disseminate itself in the West through the most varied schools from the whole Asia. To trace the history of the expansion of Buddhism in the West goes beyond the scope of this paper, but it is important to relate Buddhism with the Counterculture movement that started in 1950s and its development - the New Age movement - because they are also part of the history of how Zen Buddhism evolved in Brazil. The beatnik movement opened the doors for Zen Buddhism in the United States. The beats saw in Zen's plea for unattachment to worldly things the answer to their rebellion against the consumerism of the post World War II. -
