Announces: LADY AND THE TRAMP Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection D002066192 Set in a quaint Middle American small town in the early 1900s, the 1955 Walt Disney film Lady and the Tramp centers on the charming romance between a pampered pooch and a bone-a-fide mutt. Told from a dog’s-eye point of view, Disney’s classic canine caper features unforgettable songs and a memorable score that is the musical tail wagging his beloved dog story. Following Cinderella, this time around Disney wanted songs that would convey emotions and personality, as well as to help the Disney artists tell their cinematic story. Disney turned to a fresh and invigorating source of songs: movie, radio, television and recording great, Peggy Lee, the sensuous songster who was a top-of-the- charts star. Along with the talents of song writer Sonny Burke, the film featured a plethora of effervescent vocals. Combined with the cracking score by composer Oliver Wallace, a nostalgic classic was born. In 1997, the actual soundtrack elements were released on an album for the first time. The original Disneyland Records LP release were studio recordings and not the recordings from the original soundtrack (except for “Home Sweet Home”) that ultimately premiered in 1997. Walt Disney Records has included those versions as bonus tracks on disc two following The Lost Chords for their premiere CD release. Although the movie is a CinemaScope film and in stereo (at least the dialog and sound effects are), the music elements have always been in mono. For this release, Disney music expert and restoration genius Randy Thornton has turned out the cleanest and brightest soundtrack version of this heartwarming classic.

  • Mouse Tracks : the Story of Walt Disney Records PDF
Mouse Tracks : The Story of Walt Disney Records PDF Author: Tim Hollis Pages: 240 pages ISBN: 9781578068494 Around the world there are grandparents, parents, and children who can still sing ditties by Tigger or Baloo the Bear or the Seven Dwarves. This staying power and global reach is in large part a testimony to the pizzazz of performers, songwriters, and other creative artists who worked with Walt Disney Records. Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records chronicles for the first time the fifty-year history of the Disney recording companies launched by Walt Disney and Roy Disney in the mid-1950s, when Disneyland Park, Davy Crockett, and the Mickey Mouse Club were taking the world by storm. The book provides a perspective on all-time Disney favorites and features anecdotes, reminiscences, and biographies of the artists who brought Disney magic to audio. Authors Tim Hollis and Greg Ehrbar go behind the scenes at the Walt Disney Studios and discover that in the early days Walt Disney and Roy Disney resisted going into the record business before the success of ""The Ballad of Davy Crockett"" ignited the in-house label. Along the way, the book traces the recording adventures of such Disney favorites as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Cinderella, Bambi, Jiminy Cricket, Winnie the Pooh, and even Walt Disney himself. Mouse Tracks reveals the struggles, major successes, and occasional misfires. Included are impressions and details of teen-pop princesses Annette Funicello and Hayley Mills, the Mary Poppins phenomenon, a Disney-style ""British Invasion,"" and a low period when sagging sales forced Walt Disney to suggest closing the division down.

Popular Music (2012) Volume 31/3. © Cambridge University Press 2012, pp. 417–436 doi:10.1017/S0261143012000335 The new ‘tween’ music industry: The Disney Channel, Kidz Bop and an emerging childhood counterpublic TYLER BICKFORD Department of Music, Columbia University, 2690 Broadway, MC 1813, New York, NY 10027, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article examines the expansion of the US children’s music industry in the last decade. It con- siders the sanitising of Top 40 pop for child audiences in the Kidz Bop compilations, the entrance of Disney into the popular music market and the meteoric rise of tween music products such as High School Musical, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber. It shows that, as children increasingly consume mainstream musical products, in the converse dynamic children’s artists themselves play an increasingly prominent role in popular culture and in many ways have taken the lead both in commercial success and in stylistic innovations. Examining public expressions of age-based solidarity among celebrity musicians associated with children, this article argues that children’s music is increasingly articulated through tropes of identity politics, and rep- resents the early stages of a childhood counterpublic. Over the last decade, children’s music has been at the forefront of a remarkable trans- formation in the children’s media and consumer industries. Children’s musical pro- ducts, once dominated by folk singers and animated musicals, now sound and look increasingly like the mainstream pop aimed at youth and adult audiences. With sophisticated production values, professional songwriting, and talented and stylish performers, the children’s music industry has become a powerful force in popular music.

Yes, Michael is “relaxed,” he’s a movie star, he’s a television celeb- rity, he’s a nightclub sensation, he’s a social issue and, of course, he’s one of the world’s most successful recording artists. All in all, he’s an entertainment phenomenon the likes of whom emerge only a half-dozen times or so in the course of a century. Oh wait -- that’s Dean Martin. Well, Michael Giacchino is relaxed, too. And he’s a darned good film music composer. In fact, you know what? I’d hire him to write film music over Dean Martin any day. One, because Dean Martin doesn’t write film music and two, because he’s dead. So Michael has it over Dean Martin 100%. Granted, there are other people who write film music that aren’t dead. So why was Michael Giacchino perfect for this job? Up is nothing if not eclectic. It demands a lot as it switches from a nostalgic memory, to a trio of goofball tagalongs, to an action adventure. As we listed the litany of skills we were looking for in a composer, a music agent told us, “Sounds like you need three composers!” Of course, we got Michael Giacchino, who single-handedly wrote everything we needed and tied it all together beautifully.
