The Clthe Classicsassics
THE CL THE THE CL THE THE CL THE THE CL THE THE CL THE January 1, 2000 Attendance - 72,723 Arkansas 27, Texas 6 Thirty years after “The Game of the Century,” the year 2000 began with a classic “Shootout” when long-time foes Arkansas and Texas renewed their rivalry in the 64th Southwestern Bell Cotton ASSICS ASSICS ASSICS ASSICS Bowl Classic. GAME SUMMARY ASSICS The last time these two rivals met was in 1991 when the Razorbacks carted home a 14-13 victory prior to their departure to the Southeastern Conference from their long-time home in the Southwest Conference. However, the most famous meeting of all took place on December 6, 1969, in the final game of college football’s 100th season. Texas was ranked No. 1 and Arkansas was No. 2. President Richard Nixon flew into Fayetteville to proclaim the winning team as national champi- ons. That dreary winter day proved to be an afternoon the Hogs could never forget and one the Longhorns would point to with pride. Texas rallied from a fourth quarter 14-0 deficit in the “Big Shootout” to pull off a stunning 15-14 victory and propelled the Horns to a memorable battle with Notre Dame in the 1970 Cotton Bowl Classic. No doubt, this wouldn’t be just any match-up on just any New Year’s Day. It was Texas vs. Arkansas, and the stage would be the Cotton Bowl at the “Turn of the Century.” And for Arkansas, it was a chance to bury some painful memories from the past. -

Nfl Quarterbacks Abound
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 (212) 450-2000 * FAX (212) 681- 7573 WWW.NFLMedia.com Joe Browne, Senior Vice President- Communications Greg Aiello, Vice President-Public Relations FOR USE AS DESIRED NFL-20 4/25/02 NFL QUARTERBACKS ABOUND A record number of quarterbacks were selected in last weekend’s NFL Draft. Fifteen quarterbacks were taken, the most in the history of the seven-round draft that was instituted in 1994. That number does not even include two other outstanding college QBs who were drafted as wide receivers. You never know where that quarterback star is going to come from, says Super Bowl XXXVI- winning coach BILL BELICHICK of the New England Patriots. Two years ago in the sixth round, Belichick selected an unheralded TOM BRADY, who would direct the Patriots last season to their NFL title and win the Super Bowl MVP Award in the process. “It’s sometimes hard to evaluate some players until you actually give them the opportunity,” says Belichick. “I’m sure people saw that KURT WARNER had talent but felt he was too far away. A guy like JEFF GARCIA might not look the part like some of the other quarterbacks, but he’s a productive player on the field. “What you’re looking for is a guy that has some of the qualities that you’re looking for, but you’re going to have to give the guy some direction and coaching.” A lot of that Patriots’ “direction and coaching” (Brady is now the unquestioned starter after eight- year starter DREW BLEDSOE was traded to Buffalo last Sunday) will go to fourth-round selection ROHAN DAVEY (LSU) and free-agent signee MAJOR APPLEWHITE of Texas. -
