Presidents Report – Paul Stockwell

Season 2017-18 has been another very successful year for the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club.

On-Field Results On-field the club had a large number of teams make the finals. This included our A-Turf, B-Turf and C-Turf, Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s, and Under 17s. This shows a lot of depth for the club, and bodes well for the future. Thanks to all the contributors and volunteers to these teams, including coaches, parents, scorers, transporters, general helpers.

The Sunday C-Turf team won the premiership for the second successive year, which is a great achievement, and on the juniors front the Under 13s A – Friday night, against extremely strong won the premiership, also back to back. Well done to all involved with these two sides.

Club Financials Our club has again had a positive result for 2017-18, returning a profit of $1,890. Great credit goes to our Treasurer Steve Dimitriadis for his expertise, knowledge, experience, and vigilance in driving positive results, not only this season, but for almost a decade. Steve puts in a huge amount of time following-up council and other parties to ensure our club gets the best deal, and the often difficult task of outstanding memberships. Key highlights for me in terms of fundraising were:

Past Players Day : Another great success financially. A big thanks to Colin Cass for driving this event, others on the organising committee, and those who helped on the day. In particular Chris Hatzoglou, Adam Ciach, Vic Grima, Sam Bargiamidis and Chris Hatzistavrou.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles : The club very successfully ran three sausage sizzles this season, netting a nice profit of around $3k for our efforts. Well done to Dina Stockwell, and Darren Sandars for taking over the organising reigns from Steve, and facilitating such positive results. Thanks to all sizzlers for volunteering on each of the days.

Hosting of Grand Final at Ainsworth : Whilst I unfortunately wasn’t able to witness this in person, I have heard, and seen the sizeable profit made over the 4 days, which was in the vicinity of $4k. Thanks to all who contributed and drove this event. Notable mentions to Adam Ciach, Darren Sandars, and Chris Konstantinidis, and Matt Shawcross for their considerable contribution to this event.

Scholarships: Thanks to Ben Ciach, Paul Muller, and Chris Hatzoglou for their contributions towards these very important scholarships.

Club Operations Our club operates successfully through the contribution by many. I would particularly like to thank all the Executive Members for their tireless commitment and energy towards the best interests of the club. In particular, a big thankyou to the following key members: Chris Hatzoglou (Administrator); Nick Hatzoglou (Senior Vice- President); Ilario Candusio (Junior Vice-President); Steve Dimitriadis (Treasurer); Matthew Shawcross (Director Junior Program & Match Committee); Adam Ciach (Assistant Administrator).

I would particularly like to thank a couple of people for their huge contributions this season. Firstly, thanks to Matthew Shawcross. Our club is very fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Matthew Shawcross overseeing and driving our junior program. Matt is an absolute star. Despite increasing work responsibilities, Matt continues to put in an enormous amount of time ensuring the program’s success. This was taken to another level this year by Matt taking on the B-Turf captaincy to oversee a youth focussed team which would have a significant number of junior players mixed in with a few experienced players. At the start of the season we were hoping 2-3 wins but the team exceeded all expectations and made the finals. A brilliant effort and something to build on for the coming seasons. Matt, you have been an absolute rock for me over my time as president, and so nice to have somebody that I could trust to always get the job done. Thanks so much.

Secondly I would like to put out a massive thank you to Adam Ciach. Adam, you are the heart and soul of the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club. There is hardly an area of the club you don’t assist with, and you were always my first go to if I needed something done. This year you added the U11s coaching role, to all the other things you do. Well done and thanks. You absolutely deserved your Best Club Person award.

As we know, food is very important at our club, and I would like to thank Chris Hatzoglou, Adam Ciach, Ilario Candusio, and Steve Dimitriadis for organising and delivering such wonderful and varied food options throughout the season. This is something all players (and non-players) really appreciate and look forward to, and something that sets our club apart from most clubs.

Thank-you to Tim Mahoney (Senior Coach), and Luke Simpson (Assistant Coach) for organising and managing training, dealing with player issues, and helping our senior and junior sides have a successful year. You are both young men learning your way in what is a difficult job at local cricket club’s. You both bought into our plan of focussing on junior development rather than paid imports, and we are just starting to bear the fruits of this approach.

A big thank you to Nick Hatzoglou for his ongoing supply of goods and merchandise to the club, and for his input, insights, and contacts from a Cricket Australia perspective. This is something that has been extremely beneficial to our club is fostering such a positive image in the community and media.

Our ground and particularly our was once again recognised as one of the better in the league, which is testament to all the work and know how that Chris Konstantinidis and Adam Ciach put into it. Well done again.

A special mention to Kerry Young, Don Luca, and Darren Sandars for their significant contribution across both junior and senior teams.

My Personal Thank you They say that you really know who your friends are when things are down. This has absolutely been proven to me over recent weeks as I have been dealing with a serious health issue. The love and support I have received from so many across the club has been overwhelming and completely blown away. It has just reinforced to me the benefits of being part of such a great club like the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club. I have been very fortunate to have met and developed many great friendships through the club that I hope will be lifelong. I would particularly like to thank Chris Hatzoglou, and Ilario Candusio for their huge support of me, being a conduit to the club during my recent health battles, but also over the past year’s providing me so much mentoring and support. I would have been lost without you both.

Given my current health situation, and ongoing treatment it is only appropriate that I stand down as President at the upcoming AGM. Executive members of the Club are aware of my intentions and have plans in place to move forward in 2018-19. This will present opportunities for a new group of volunteers to take more prominent roles in the club, which is absolutely crucial to ensure the long term success of the club.

It has been an absolute honour and privilege to the President of the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club over the past three years, and once my health is back on track I look forward to continue contributing to the club in the best way I can. It is a truly great club and something to be part of.

Good luck and good health to all.

Paul Stockwell Administrators Report – Chris Hatzoglou

In my third and final year as Administrator, I would like to acknowledge that the role has been a shared effort across the Club. In particular, I’d like to acknowledge our President Paul Stockwell, whose hands on approach has continued and mostly taken on tasks that previous Administrators would have undertaken. Consequently, there has been a reduced level of input from the Club’s Administrator. With Paul’s health issues towards the end of the season, the Club Committee has worked together to meet our obligations to our members, the association and other stakeholders.

There are a number of significant contributions from a few key people, including our Treasurer Steve Dimitriadis who provided broad support across areas that are not normally handled by a Club Treasurer. For many years, we have had a very experienced and capable Executive Committee (Paul Stockwell, Nick Hatzoglou, Ilario Candusio, Steve Dimitriadis, Matthew Shawcross and Adam Ciach). We have all worked together for the benefit of the Club and there is a lot to show for it.

In addition, our General Committee and Match Committee (Tim Mahoney, Luke Simpson, Matthew Shawcross, Nick Hatzoglou and Paul Stockwell) make substantial contributions to the running of the Club. They are very well supported by other volunteers and although there are gaps and a concentration of on few key individuals, we manage to achieve a lot each season.

Our President Paul Stockwell, who has been an integral part of the Club Executive for over a decade has continued to make substantial contributions towards the running of the Club and this year has been all the more difficult with the personal health issues. This will in turn require a review of arrangements going forward and present an opportunity for others to get more involved. I wish Paul all the best for a strong recovery and many years of cricket ahead of him.

Our Junior Program Director Matthew Shawcross has continued to strengthen our expanding Junior Program. We have been able to secure experienced coaches at this level and introduce new coaches. Overall a very successful year with a number of teams making finals and our U13s winning their premiership.

In support was our General Committee, which included; Adam Miller, Darren Sandars, Chris Hatzistavrou, Dina Stockwell, Simon Charlton, Kerry Young, Peter Hatzoglou and Vic Grima.

Season highlights: • Performance of our A/ B & C Turf sides with all making finals • Congratulation to Luke Simpson and Usman Afzal on making the VTCA North B! Team of the Year • Congratulation to Gurbeer Singh on winning the NWCA Vic Kyte Shield Average • C-Turf Premiership (well done to Nick Hatzoglou and all the squad) • Performance of Juniors with a U17s, U15s, U13s and U11s making finals • U13s Premierships (well done to Peter Hatzoglou and all the U13s players and volunteers)) • Our third Past Players Day (thanks to Colin Cass and Club Volunteers who organised the event) • Effort of all the Executive/ Committee and Volunteers to work together to ensure the Club finished well for season 2016-17 (with absence of our President Paul Stockwell from late Feb)

I very much enjoy my involvement in the Club as a player, coach and volunteer. This season I have continued to assist with the general administration of the Club, contributing to the preparing of healthy food options and general fundraising and events. I’d like to thank all our patrons, sponsors and supporters for making season 2017/18 another one I which we can all be proud of.

For the coming season, I am happy to contribute in any way that would best suit the club and to help support the introduction of newer volunteers to ensure the ongoing success of our Club. After 13 years on the Club Executive it’s the right time for me to step aside and allow others to get involved.

It has been an honour and most of the time enjoyable. Viva Sunshine Heights Cricket Club!

Treasurers Report – Steve Dimitriadis

Senior Coach – Tim Mahoney

Another season has absolutely flown by and what a season it has been. There were a few lows but heavily outweighed by all the highs. Firstly, I would like to thank all those who have put their hand in and volunteered their time in helping the club. The club runs on the back of a fine group of individuals, without which, there would be no SHCC. Thank you again to the club, executive and committee who have entrusted the coaching to the youthful hands of Luke and I.

As I said in my report twelve months ago, it is very pleasing to see my junior talent coming through and playing in senior grades. This year, there was an explosion of juniors playing Saturday afternoons, across all grades. The B turf side this year, with the junior composition of the side, truly saw how far these young cricketers have come by making finals despite all the diversity they faced. It is one of the small delights as coach being able to see these young men become not only great cricketers but even finer individuals.

What can I say about the C Turf premiership? Another dominant performance by Nick in leading the young men and some old ones into another premiership. Hatz off to you boys, a senior premiership is hard to come by.

As coaches, Luke and I get to see firsthand the range of people, talent and generosity amongst the club. It isn’t just a cricket club, but a real tight knit bunch of great people. I particularly look forward to Thursday nights where there is a real emersion of young, old and of all ethnicities as we gather around for the food, what the club is really known for.

The club is heading in a bright, new direction. This is something that excites Luke and I. It is only a matter of time until we see consistent success across all grades. All the hard work and effort we put in now will pay dividends into the future. Well done.

Tim Mahoney

Milo In2Cricket Program – Sukhjinder Dhaliwal

A fantastic season for our Milo participants in 2017-18.

We completed our 12 sessions for the year and each session was designed to introduce different aspects of cricket to participants. We had 23 registered participants and regularly had other participants attending sessions who have been part of milo in past. We also had some of under 11 players come down and participate in sessions. Under 11 players were mainly there with sibling. Great way to engage kids for club in long run as they look up to under 11 players and look forward to next step of playing competitive junior cricket.

Sunday morning session have worked well over past few years. This year focus was to get more parents involved in sessions. Sessions were divided into 3 parts. Warm up activity, cricket skills and finish with game to get parents involved.

I want to thank parents for choosing Sunshine Heights Cricket Club and also for their time and efforts in getting participants to the sessions.

Many thanks to committee members for on- going support to ensure facilities are available for kids to be involved.

Thanks to all Milo participants for another great season 2017-2018.

Under 11s A Friday – Adam Ciach

The 2017/18 was a very exciting year for our 11a side. Most of the boys come through our 11 cubs side and took a step forward into the A’s competition, where they for the first time they got to play for points and the possibility of playing finals.

The skills where very scratchy at the start of the season, but with some work and willingness to listen and learn, the skills of all the boys improved quite dramatically. They also developed a bond with each other and were great at acknowledging good efforts and also comforting a teammate up when things didn’t go right.

We started the season with a couple of wins and losses and were mid table early, the breakthrough game come just before Christmas when we beat the top undefeated side, which really instilled believe in the boys. At the end of the home and away season we finished 3 rd on the ladder. Our best game of the season was the Semi Final against Footscray ANA where everything just clicked. All batted, bowled and fielded well and all the little one percenters which I’d drumming into the boys were all on show. The boys won their Semi Final game and received a great appraisal from the opposition coach who mentioned the boys have come a long way since we first played them. In the Grand Final the boys were outclassed by a very strong side in Williamstown CYMS but held their head very high.

Throughout season it was great to see all parents at all the games and ride the bumps with their boys, and a special mention to Jeremy Bartram who did the scoring for me and to my little fella Liam who entered the scores onto MyCricket. Coaching wasn’t something I was interested in but watching all the boys develop their skill over the season gave me joy and satisfaction. I thoroughly enjoyed the season and really look forward to next season

Adam Ciach

Under 13s Friday – Peter Hatzoglou

The 2017/18 season was one of success for the U/13 Friday Night team.

We finished 4th on the ladder, winning the grand final, grabbing our second consecutive flag.

Notable performers throughout the season included Alexander Hatzoglou, Shawaiz Abbas, Pryanchu Chopra and Nikhil Cherukeri. All of which demonstrated potential as future A/B Turf players and should be nurtured accordingly.

The team's composition had many promising bottom age players, of these - Brodie Webber, Devansh Aerry, Brodie Webb, Aaron Magri and Younis Cassim performed well.

Parental support was limited as has been the case for a sustained period now. However, Brodie Webber's mother Michelle was brilliant.

Otherwise Devansh Aerry's father Tarun was friendly, Aaron Magri's father Tony provided lifts and came to games regularly and Nikhil Cherukeri's parents Naveen and Mandy were in contact with me.

Particular thanks must be extended to Michele Webber - once again and Leo Hatzoglou for scoring.

U13s Premiers, Coaches, Volunteers and Supports Under 13s Saturday – Matthew Shawcross

For the first time in many seasons, our club had enough players for two U13 teams – a wonderful achievement!

Our U13s Saturday team consisted of a few returning players plus many beginners and some U11 children who were excelling at that age level. Under the newly-adopted Cricket Australia junior formats our team began the season in B Grade where we struggled to compete at the level with the exception a two fine individual performances from Achuil Abiem, who made his first 50 and Mayik Atem who made a 46.

After 3 rounds, the WRJCA sensibly regraded that competition which allowed us to play in a 30 over per side competition for the remainder of the season. This proved much more suitable for our players as we began to produce consistently competitive performances which resulted in three victories along the way! Our first win against Wyndhamvale was a massive highlight, securing the last 6 wickets for just 8 runs, to win by 9 runs.

Throughout the season there were many terrific performances and improvements by all the players. A standout was Mayik Atem who ended up winning the MVP for the WRJCA in this competition. An outstanding season that went along with outstanding leadership from Mayik! Ashrit Goel also enjoyed some excellent performances as the season progressed – a testament to the hard work he put in on the training track. Nybol Mayoum, as our only female player, was terrific in here batting, bowling and general leadership with the group – I’m sure she has a big future in the sport.

I’d like to thank Kerry Young (scorer and team manager) for her tireless efforts throughout the season. Without her, these young people would not have a sport to play. To Tereza Ayat (Multicultural Aide), your support with transport was also greatly appreciated – a pleasure working with you again and great to see you really enjoy the matches as you learn more about cricket.

I hope all the children enjoyed their time on the cricket field this past summer and that they all return again for another action-packed season of cricket!

Kind Regards,

Matthew Shawcross – U13 Saturday Coach 2017/18

Under 15 Team – Darren Sandars & Chris Hatzoglou

Our under 15B cricket team had a great season overall. After being promoted from U15C into U15B after 3 games, we managed to play well for the remaining home and away season and made finals once again. As a team, our under 15’s won 6 games from a possible 9 during the season with one of the wins being an outright win against Point Cook in round 8. As a result, our team finished the season in 4 th position.

Our opponents in the Semi Final were Gellibrand, who had finished on top of the ladder and had beaten us very convincingly the previous game … however Cricket is a funny game as the saying goes. Our young men had re- grouped after the previous loss and believed in their abilities. This self-belief combined with some fantastic bowling, fielding and batting saw us win and earn the right to contest the Grand Final against Werribee Centrals. Unfortunately, we could not reproduce our performance from that of the Semi Final and were beaten by the better team over the weekend.

Both Chris and I would like to thank all members of the U15B this season. You are all a fantastic group of young, respectful, and talented young men. We trust you all enjoyed each other’s company, and enjoyed the experience of playing cricket at Sunshine Heights. We hope you choose to continue your cricketing careers with our great club. Special mention to our Captain Josh Luca and vice-captain Leo Hatzoglou who developed and grew into their respective roles magnificently… and lead from the front

A big thankyou to Don Luca whose tireless assistance throughout the entire season was greatly appreciated by both Chris and I and quite frankly we could not have done it without you mate To Amir Qureshi for scoring prior to Christmas. Thank you also to Matthew Shawcross, our club’s junior co- ordinator, thank you for your assistance and support. In closing I’d like to quote important words from one of the clubs esteemed Life Members, Junior Coach & Current Player Ilario Candusio

“It remains imperative to have club people put their hands up at to coach and/or assist with the running of junior cricket teams to continue the great success the junior program has had over the years. Similarly, it is contingent on the juniors coming through now who are the beneficiaries of being coached and supported to remember the assistance and guidance they now enjoy so that they themselves can look to ‘pay it forward’ in the future. This is one of the themes our club looks to instil in the young men we coach the insight to enjoy others success, contributions and look for areas they can assist.”

Good Luck with your cricketing futures young men…. We’ll be watching you all with great interest

Yours in cricket, Kernal & Kook.

Under 17 A Saturday – Adam Miller

I would first like to thank James Bartolo, Matthew Shawcross and Kerry Young for transporting the boys round all season, especially the early starts in the morning once we moved up to the 17A’s. I would also like to thank all the guys that came down at different times of the year to help support the boys and the committee for their ongoing support.

This was a big year for our boys we started the year in the U17B’s where we played well for our 3 wins. This lead to us being put up to the U17A’s and what was to be a good challenge. Our first game up in the A’s saw a huge lift from our boys who stood up to the challenge. We always knew that there would be a big step up from B’s to A’s and the boys responded and rose to the challenge. We saw some of our bowlers improve and some of our batsmen hold more value on their wicket.

We had some close games and throughout the season we let a couple of winnable games slip. We finished the season with 5 wins enough to see us through to the semi-finals against a very good Werribee outfit. The boys did well in the semi-final restricting Werribee to 6/219 considering they were 3/163 at the halfway point. We unfortunately could not string a partnership together and were bowled out for 152.

Congratulations to the boys who played throughout the year and well done on making the semi-finals. It was a pleasure to coach all of you and look forward to next season where I hope we can go one better. Remember to enjoy your cricket and have fun with your mates.

Highlights for the year

- Sid Bindroo 102* and 101* in the 17B’s - Logithan Sacheethran’s Hatrick - Frank Poligerinos 31 against Yarraville

A-Turf Captain – Luke Simpson

Another cricket season done and dusted, how quickly did that go!! Although we did not get the result we set out for at the start of the season, we made substantial improvement on previous seasons culminating in a Semi-Final loss to the eventual premiers Deer Park. Of course, with the cricket season ending, there are several highlights to look back on. Firstly, who could forget the 21 st of October 2017 vs Point Cook, the day where records tumbled everywhere at Ainsworth Reserve. Here are a few quick stats from that day: - 6/463 cc off 80 overs – highest ever score by a first eleven at SHCC - Run Rate of 5.79 per over - 47 x 4’s and 18 6’s – 296 runs in boundaries - A new record opening stand between myself and Shane of 140 - A new 5 th wicket partnership between Saman and Usman of 218 - Saman’s 147, Usman’s 111 and Shane’s 99.

Another great highlight of the 17/18 season were the 4 baggy maroon’s presented to players making their debut in the A-Turf. The special significance of this baggy maroon is that it is only presented to players who have progressed through the junior program at our club. To present these caps to Chien Mayoum, Karan Gandiraja, Josh Luca and Bol Atem is a sign that the club is heading in the right direction with our junior talent and that there is a bright future on the horizon. Another highlight of the year was our Round 10 win against the premiers Deer Park. To win in front of the strong and vocal Sunshine Heights home crowd on past player’s day would have to be one of the greatest experiences I’ve had since being back at the club. For Usman and Chien to put on 38 for the last wicket and seal the win with a famous straight drive maximum from Uzzy will be something that anyone who was in attendance that day will never forget. A special mention must go out to our award winners from presentation night: - Batting – Saman Gonawala - 375 runs @ 37.5 - Bowling – Moshin Abbas - 31 wickets @ 13.3 with an economy of 2.3 - MVP – Brandyn Disisto – 12 votes – 38 runs @ 6.3 , 24 wickets @ 18.5, 6 catches and 2 Run Outs

These awards are an acknowledgement to the effort put in not only on game day but also at training. All 3 guys were played an instrumental part in us securing a finals berth and improving on our overall record from the previous season. To finish the year in 4 th position, with a record 7 wins (1 outright), 1 draw and 4 losses was a great effort by the team and saw us compete in the first finals series for the A-Turf since the Premiership in 13/14. This now needs to be used as a platform to springboard off into next season and target that elusive A-Turf Premiership. I would also like to thank Matt Shawcross for the fantastic job he did in leading the B-Turf to a finals campaign this season. The knowledge and experience our younger players have gained off you throughout the 17/18 season is immeasurable. I look forward to seeing the fruits of your hard work prosper in the A-Turf throughout the not too distant future. Lastly, I would like to thank the committee, led by Paul Stockwell. To come to cricket and lead the A-Turf knowing you’ve got the full support of the team behind the scenes is fantastic. Thank you for showing faith in both Tim and myself. Have a safe off-season and I look forward to doing it all again next year.

Cheers, Luke Simpson

B Turf Captain – Matthew Shawcross

With a change in direction / selection policy at the commencement of this season, the B Turf began in earnest with 7 teenagers selected for the first match.

After a first-up ‘forfeit’ by West Newport, we finally got on the park against Point Cook with a competitive performance which ultimately didn’t quite achieve the desired result. Next was a match against Newport-Digman which kick-started our season courtesy of a brilliant individual performance from 17-year-old Siddhant Bindroo (133 plus 4 wickets), resulting in a nail-biting 11 run victory.

From there, we produced commanding wins over Williamstown Imperials and Sunshine YCW before a pre- Christmas narrow defeat at the hands of Wyndhamvale. Following Christmas, we got on a massive roll, with excellent wins over top side Williamstown CYMS (bowled them out for 59) and Deer Park which featured a brilliant century from Daniel Castellano.

With two rounds to go, we were well in the hunt for finals participation. Young bowlers, Bol Abiem and Josh Luca produced two fantastic performances to allow us outright victory in both these matches to achieve our finals goal – finishing just one point off second place on the ladder. Mehdi Hussain also made a special guest appearance in the final round, taking 8 wickets for the match!

Our semi-final against St Andrew’s Pascoe Vale produced mixed feelings as we put in an outstanding display of finals’ cricket, only to fall just short of victory. Bol Abiem, Shashanka Saurav, Josh Luca and Leo Hatzoglou all put in performances beyond their years which was highly satisfying given the charter of this team is to produce future A Turf players for Heights.

All up, this was an extremely successful season for B Turf. I would like to especially thank our home umpire, Don Luca, for his outstanding commitment to our team, Chris Konna for brilliant curating and Adam Ciach for afternoon teas (the best in Melbourne) and general leadership, support and wicket keeping!

I hope the young guys have enjoyed the experience. I hope many of them graduate to A Turf next season. It has been a wonderful season – the challenge is to now continue the momentum.

Matt Shawcross B Turf Captain – season 2017/2018

C Turf Captain – Nick Hatzoglou

PREMIERS – VTCA North West D2

Standing left to right: Ajay Sharma, Ali Raza, Paul Stockwell (President) Sukhjinder Dhaliwal, Peter Hatzoglou, Darren Sandars, Adam Ciach (Man of the Match) Alexander Hatzoglou, Nick Hatzoglou (Captain), Chris Hatzoglou, Siva Gnanasegaram, Max Hatzoglou, Matthew Shawcross Kneeling left to right: Michael Burton Senior, and Michael Hatzistavrou

10 things about C-Turf

1. We used 29 players this season with 13 being juniors with 13 South East Asian, 9 European, 4 Anglo-Celtic & 3 from African heritage. 2. Alexander Hatzoglou bowled 73.3 overs taking 20 wickets ahead of Ali Raza who took 13 wickets from 40 overs. 3. Won the Grand Final after losing the semi-final. Werribee Centrals was disqualified after playing an ineligible player. 4. Alexander Hatzoglou 5/9, Sid Bindroo 4/12, Logi Shacheethran 3/9, Aneeq Qureshi 3/14, and Khemis Jacob 2/1 all outstanding bowling efforts from our juniors 5. Michael Hatzistavrou was outstanding in the field with 5 catches and many runs saved through excellent fielding efforts. 6. Champion Player Ali Raza 186 runs and 13 wickets in 8 matches 7. Won 8 of the 13 coin tosses this season 8. Over the course of the season we had 9 batting retirements, none more important than Adam Ciach 51 in the Grand Final. 9. We utilised 7 wicket-keepers 10. Life member Michael Burton Senior came back to the club at age 56 to play 9 matches including the winning Grand Final.

The C-Turf team upheld the mantra of playing the game in the spirit it was intended. Each home game is an event where we showcase everything that is great about cricket. Clean amenities, welcoming and safe fun environment and acknowledgement after the match for players of both competing teams with the Good Sports presentation that include the umpires.

Season 2016- 2017 will go down in the record books as C-Turfs 6th grand Final in 6 years including a tie vs Doutta Stars in 2014/2015. A feat the club is very proud of given the development nature of this level of competition. Now genuinely a one day competition it was not always the case with 2-day cricket most prevalent in the first couple of seasons.

This year’s Grand Final versus Seabrook was a “Greek Tragedy” for some. After losing comprehensively in the Semi-final to Werribee Centrals we were right to think the season was over. The Seabrook captain Peter Fraczek contacted our club via email and indicated that as the other grand Finalist they would prefer to play Sunshine Heights as we are a great bunch of guys and if we were aware of Werribee Centrals playing an ineligible player. Peter suggested we let the VTCA know and if we didn’t they would. So, it came to pass that Sunshine Heights CC would be playing Seabrook CC in the Grand Final to be hosted at Ainsworth Reserve.

Continuing the luck with the toss, I chose to bat and we were off to a flier, losing my wicket after a hamstring injury meant a real crack at the bowling as running between wickets was not an option, FOW 30 after 5.2 overs. The highlight of the batting was club stalwart Adam Ciach who retired on 51 off 92 balls faced. He was outstanding as wickets toppled around him. Alexander Hatzoglou faced 25 balls and Darren Sandars made a useful 9 runs which helped advance our score to respectful 130 at the close of innings.

Seabrook looked in great shape at 3/90 after 25 overs with Captain Peter Fraczek leading the way. He is a class player who played firsts cricket last season. He had an eventful week with his wife giving birth early the day before. The Sunshine Heights bowlers then switched on and in a quick scoop captured 5 Seabrook wickets in quick succession turning the score to 8/113 off 33 overs. The atmosphere was incredible and the large crowd of several hundred were on tenterhooks. Three overs remaining Chris Hatzoglou and Ajay Sharma steered us home for a victory for all the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club.

Standout bowler for Sunshine Heights was 13-year-old Alexander Hatzoglou who opened the bowling and captured the excellent figures of 3/10 off 7 overs. Disappointing for Seabrook who defeated us twice during the season but everyone shook hands and celebrated what was an excellent Grand Final played as the game should be. Congratulations Seabrook on upholding the Spirit of Cricket and a very good season.

In addition, C-Turf provided opportunities for newer players to the club to integrate into structured cricket with SHCC. Some old and new faces were able to contribute in whatever way they could. People such as Ali Raza, Darren Sandars, Adam Ciach, Sukhjinder Dhaliwal, Ajay Sharma, Sidhant Bindroo, Siva Gnanasegaram, Michael Hatzistavrou, Peter, Max, Alexander & Leo Hatzoglou all stood up. Other senior players that helped when asked were Matthew Shawcross, Adam Miller, and Jarrod Allen. Thank you for your contribution and the club is stronger for your commitment.

Special mention to the curators Adam Ciach and Chris Konstantinidis who have done an outstanding job of preparing the wicket over many seasons, particularly with the extra preparatory work that is required for Sunday’s. Scoring Matthew Shawcross and Don Luca , Afternoon Tea Steve Dimitriadis and Suzan Hatzoglou . The team members are very grateful to all the people that come down and support on a Sunday including Marcela Fuenzalida and Roza Balli. Congratulations to Ali Raza who won the outstanding player often doubling up after playing with the B- Turf on the Saturday. I have enjoyed the C-Turf captaincy and the responsibility to ensure people enjoy their cricket whilst at the same time developing their skills. I would like to thank the club selection panel, committee and players for the honour.

In closing Congratulations to all our trophy winners across the club.

Life Member Michael Burton Senior celebrating his comeback with a Sunshine Heights premiership with family members Marcela, Maggie and Michael junior. A-Matting Captain – Paul Stockwell

Following a bit of a re-shuffle of the grades within the NWMCA, the A-Matting side ultimately ended up in a grade that to be honest was beyond our capability. A number of the sides we were competing against were 1 st X1 sides for synthetic based clubs. However, as Captain I was not going to turn up my toes, and determined to battle through the season as best we could.

After losing our first 4 games to very strong sides, we finally struck with our first win of the season against arch rival Sydenham-Hillside. This was a great boost for the team and to some degree marked a line in the sand for what would be a much more successful period of the year. From Rd 5 onwards we managed to win 4 matches, draw 3 matches, and lose 3 matches. Whilst we ultimately ended up close to the bottom of the ladder, the resilience of the team was commendable and something I am extremely proud of as Captain of the team.

Key Highlights • Gurbeer (Garry) Singh’s batting performances including 101 v Sydenham • Ilario Candusio’s 109 v ultimate premiers Greenvale Kangaroos. A brilliant innings • Two very close last wicket victory’s against Oak Park (who ultimately played off in GF) • “Kernal’s” infamous dropped catch at first slip with opposition 9 wickets down needing 6 runs • Ilario Candusio’s dummy spit in Rd 4 where following a first ball duck. Lars bat ended up on Balmoral roof, and he retired to his van contemplating his cricket future • Gavin Mahoney for coming along to support the team, provide a laugh, and supply his questionable lollies, and jokes. • 37 players used throughout the season, exposing all to a strong level of synthetic cricket

Most Valuable Player (MVP) : Gurbeer (Garry) Singh – 352 runs, sound bowling, and some brilliant catches made Garry a standout for MVP. And such a nice bloke to top it off. Batting Average: Gurbeer (Garry) Singh (352 runs at an average of 88). Garry also won Association award. : Khemis Jacob (18 wickets at an average of 20.17). Khemis tried hard all season and really improved. Khemis had the knack of picking-up a wicket just when we needed it. Keep Fielding Award : Logithan Sacheethran. Logi was tireless in the field, running his heart out, taking great catches, and effecting run-outs. Much needed youth to offset some of our more experienced cricketers.

Thank you to all those who played, supported, or watched the A-Matting team this season. It was a challenging season, but one that resulted in a number of positives, including the improvement in bowling from Logi and Khemis, and great individual performances from Garry, Lars, Simon, Adam.

What stuck out to me this year was despite often being up against it in terms of standard of opposition, the comradery was still there. Players were playing for and supporting each other. This feeling of being part of a team, along with playing with those that I enjoy spending time with, and being in the trenches with are the prime reason I have continued to play cricket. And look forward to continuing, health permitting in 2018-19. I particularly enjoyed the mix of playing with very experienced and competitive beasts such as Lars, Kernal, Simon, Kook, Matt, and Adam Miller, offset by a mix of youthful exuberance provided by the juniors.

Thanks to Lars for looking after couple of matches I wasn’t able to play during season. Thanks to Kernal, and Adam Miller for setting-up ground in morning, and packing-up, and transporting players.

Good luck to all in 2018-19, and remember you are a long time retired, so hoping we can all continue to go around. Who knows Lars, now that they have removed that B-Turf match ball from my stomach, I may get my cut shot back.

Poem by Matthew Shawcross: “54”

”54”

In an ever changing time Post the Second World War A cricket club in Melbourne’s west Was born in '54

Castley reserve was chosen As the Club's home base But the early years brought struggles With no facilities at this place

But into decade number two The club began to thrive With the A Turf winning its first flag In 1965

Junior teams began to grow As the years passed by 4 premierships won on the trot The Heights began to fly

The club continued on this path For many years ahead Sunshine Heights were a team That opponents would always dread

In 1990/91 A and B Turf won the double Who would have thought just a few years ahead Our club would be in dire trouble

A changed approach was decided To return to our very best Our aim to become the most successful Multicultural club in the west

At around this time a test cap was won Funky was his name As a Heighter’s kid he inspired others To take up our nation's summer game

And so ten years ago Our junior program was reborn With names like Singh, Mayoum and Doan Gracing Ainsworth's lawn

Food became a drawing card With our famous Thursday brand The rooms were filled with faces From every different land

The kids grew into men Before our very eyes In our 59th year, four flags were won The club's greatest ever prize

The 13/14 A Turf flag Featured 8 nationalities The dream had now been realised From those days when our club was on its knees

With 150 girls and boys And senior teams galore Sunshine Heights truly honours Its birth in '54
