II PLAYERS ON JANUARY 29TH MemBers of the Division II first team, Both offense and defense, will Be honored at the U6th annual All-Southern California Board of FootBall Awards Program to Be held in the First Interstate Bank Building on Saturday morning, Jan. 29 at 10:30 a.m. Players, their coaches, high school administrators and collegiate coaches and players will receive invitations to the annual ceremonies, with championship prep coaches also be honored. Players of the Year in the various divisions, including Mike Smith, will Be recipients of the Athletic Foundation's traditional bronze medallion award. Presentation ceremonies will be followed by a luncheon in the Bank headquarters. In Coastal Conference action, West Torrance won Its first Southern Section footBall title, 3i>-21, over Santa Monica's Vikings capping a perfect lit-0 season. West Beat Santa Monica for the Bay League crown, administering the Vikings only two losses during 1982. VJest defeated San Marcos (U8-10), Muir (2U-0) and Oxnard (17-8) Before the title decider. VerBum Dei took the Northwestern Conference crown 7-0 over Monrovia and made it a perfect 13-0 season in the doing. It was the Eagles second straight CIF title, as they took the Desert Mountain Conference crown last year. It was the 25th consecutive vic­ tory for VerBum Dei, 13 of which have been shutouts, six this year. VerBum Dei defeated Beverly Hills (27-7), RIghetti (35-lU) and St. Bernard (28-0) prior to Beating Monrovia.     THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION by Greg Shepard Head FB Coach Ron Smeltzer Servite High School Anaheim, California 300 pounds; All-State is 400; and All-American is 500 pounds. Anyway, we put 300 pounds on the bar and Ted ripped off 5 perfect reps to the wide-eyed amazement of the older athletes. From my exper­ ience, I know to do that is very unusual and I knew Ted was going to be a great player. Ted, this past 1982 season, was to power his way into the Servite record books. He rushed for 5.6 yards a carry and 16 touchdowns. He scored for 3 TD's in four different games! Ted Prukop was an All-League selection as a Junior. However, the most exciting story ofany BFS clinic came at the end of the Servite clinic with a stocky tackle by the name of Bodie Newcomb. At the end of each clinic, we select 12 athletes to dead lift. It is always a great climax. Since the Servite kids had not dead lifted before, there was only one athlete left when we got to 500 pounds. Everyone was enthusi­ astic and clapping their hands in unison as Bodie #34 Ted Pru Kop: Junior 5'llW' - 174 - 4.7 - 40 came up to the bar. With a mighty pull Bodie got it past his knees, but then the bar ripped loose and THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION crashed to the floor.     OUTLOOK PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS HISTORY MEDIA THE HISTORY OF SMU FOOTBALL 1910s On the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, coach Ray Morrison held his first practice, thus marking the birth of the SMU football program. Morrison came to the school in June of 1915 when he became the coach of the University’s football, basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as an instructor of mathematics. A former All-Southern quarterback at Vanderbilt, Morrison immediately installed the passing game at SMU. A local sportswriter nicknamed the team “the Parsons” because the squad was composed primarily of theology students. SMU was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which ruled that neither graduate nor transfer students were eligible to play. Therefore, the first SMU team consisted entirely of freshmen. The Mustangs played their first game Oct. 10, 1915, dropping a 43-0 decision to TCU in Fort Worth. SMU bounced back in its next game, its first at home, to defeat Hendrix College, 13-2.
