  • The Sports World's Event Magazine the Coronavirus Outbreak Continues
The Sports World's Event Magazine Posted On : April 17, 2020 By : Matt Traub The coronavirus outbreak continues to force difficult decisions for sports-event organizers. Here is the latest information on how the outbreak has affected the sports-event industry. BASKETBALL: NBA Keeping Options Open The 2020 NBA season, suspended since March 11 after Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for COVD-19, was scheduled to be into the postseason by mid-April. Instead, the league remains in a holding pattern with hopes to still complete the regular season before the playoffs, Commissioner Adam Silver said on a conference call recently. “Everything is on the table,” Silver said in a conference call with media. “The direction that the league office has received from our teams is that all rules are off at this point. If there is an opportunity to resume play, even if it looks different from what we’ve done historically, we should be modeling it.” Various reports have had the league restarting the season in one spot, with Las Vegas prominently mentioned. To finish the regular season and the playoffs would push the season’s completion past its traditional mid-June ending, which could necessitate having the 2020–21 season start later than planned. “While this virus is of course a dire public health issue, so of course is shutting down the economy,” Silver said. “I think it’s why the league sees it as our obligation, to the extent we can resume play in a safe way, to look at every potential way of doing so.

  • Hitachi Continues Partnershipwith Team
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HITACHI CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH TEAM PENSKE IN 2019 TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (March 4, 2019) – Team Penske and Hitachi Group today announced a continuation of their partnership for the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. Team Penske will enter its 53rd year of racing competition in 2019, and Hitachi is proud to carry on its dynamic relationship with Team Penske for the eighth-consecutive season. Team Penske and Hitachi have shared success both on and off the track since becoming partners in 2012. After a productive five-year relationship with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, Hitachi was paired with 2017 IndyCar Series Champion Josef Newgarden beginning with the 2018 season. This year, the familiar Hitachi branding will adorn Newgarden’s No. 2 Dallara/Chevrolet for eight of the 17 IndyCar Series races. Newgarden tied for the series lead in wins (three) and poles (four) with Hitachi in 2018, elevating his career stats to include 10 wins, six poles and the series championship just two years ago. “I can’t wait for the 2019 season to start,” said Newgarden. “We learned a lot at the Circuit of the Americas test in February and we’ll apply that to the No. 2 Hitachi Chevrolet. I’m confident in the data we collected as a team and I’m sure we’ll start the year strong.” He added, “Hitachi is a great partner for the whole team. I’m excited they’re back with us this season and I’m ready to represent them on track at St. Pete and all season long.” Hitachi will also continue as an associate sponsor for Team Penske’s other IndyCar Series entries – the Dallara/Chevrolets driven by 2016 IndyCar Champion Simon Pagenaud, and 2014 Champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power.

The fact that he hadn’t been on a street course since 2015 and was still able to come right out of the gate confident and constantly improving every session was extremely impressive,” said Team Principal Trevor Carlin. “The SmartStop Self Storage Chevrolet looked great out on track and their group has been a pleasure to work with, so we couldn’t be more pleased to have them back this weekend in Iowa. Sage has done really well in Iowa in the past, so hopefully we can use his experience and our past success at Iowa Speedway to come away with a good result for the team and our partners at SmartStop Self Storage.” Karam will make his third start of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season, and second with Carlin, this weekend at the Iowa 300. • Hitachi Contract Driver Josef Newgarden Wins the 12Th Race of the 2019 Indycar Series
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hitachi Contract Driver Josef Newgarden Wins the 12th Race of the 2019 IndyCar Series Tokyo, July 24, 2019 ---Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. announced today that Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden won the Iowa 300, the 12th race of the 2019 IndyCar Series, held on July 20 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. Team Penske is sponsored by Hitachi Automotive Systems and the Hitachi Group. The Iowa Speedway is a 7/8-mile oval course, with the configuration of a gentle capital letter “D” overall. Average speeds on this course are not fast, but the 300-lap race provides ample opportunity to watch side-by-side tight racing with two or more cars. Josef Newgarden placed third in the qualifying round held on July 19, starting behind his teammates Simon Pagenaud in the pole position, and Will Power. The start of the race was scheduled for 6:00 p.m., but was delayed for nearly five hours due to severe weather, finally getting underway at around 11:00 in the evening. Starting from the third grid, Josef Newgarden progressively moved ahead during a race with four course cautions including for contact with other drivers, eventually gaining the lead in Lap 49. A rain shower at Lap 55 led to a red flag and 25-minute interruption. Even with the fast running of his machine, Newgarden surrendered the lead three times. However, he held the top position for five-sixths of the race, ultimately taking the checkered flag. Josef Newgarden achieved his fourth victory of the season despite the sudden changes in the weather, supported by his team’s exceptional skill in setting the car.
