Abstract We study directed sets definable in o-minimal structures, show- ing that in expansions of ordered fields these admit cofinal definable curves, as well as a suitable analogue in expansions of ordered groups, and furthermore that no analogue holds in full generality. We use the theory of tame pairs to extend the results in the field case to definable families of sets with the finite intersection property. We then apply our results to the study of definable topologies. We prove that all de- finable topological spaces display properties akin to first countability, and give several characterizations of a notion of definable compactness due to Peterzil and Steinhorn [PS99] generalized to this setting. 1 Introduction The study of objects definable in o-minimal structures is motivated by the notion that o-minimality provides a rich but \tame" setting for the theories of said objects. In this paper we study directed sets definable in o-minimal structures, focusing on expansions of groups and fields. "General set theory is pretty trivial stuff really" (Halmos; see [H, p. vi]). At least, with the hindsight afforded by Cantor, Zermelo, and others, it is pretty trivial to do the following. First, write down a list of axioms about sets and membership, enunciating some "obviously true" set-theoretic principles; the most popular Hst today is called ZFC (the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms with the axiom of Choice). Next, explain how, from ZFC, one may derive all of conventional mathematics, including the general theory of transfinite cardi nals and ordinals. This "trivial" part of set theory is well covered in standard texts, such as [E] or [H]. Jech's book is an introduction to the "nontrivial" part. Now, nontrivial set theory may be roughly divided into two general areas. The first area, classical set theory, is a direct outgrowth of Cantor's work. Cantor set down the basic properties of cardinal numbers. In particular, he showed that if K is a cardinal number, then 2", or exp(/c), is a cardinal strictly larger than K (if A is a set of size K, 2* is the cardinality of the family of all subsets of A). Now starting with a cardinal K, we may form larger cardinals exp(ic), exp2(ic) = exp(exp(fc)), exp3(ic) = exp(exp2(ic)), and in fact this may be continued through the transfinite to form expa(»c) for every ordinal number a. -

Typical restrictions on the intersections F n F of any F and F’ in F are: (i) FnF’# 0, where all FEF have k elements (Erdos, Ko, and Rado (1961)). (ii) IFn F’I > j (Katona (1964)). In this paper, we consider the following general question: For a given family B of subsets of [n] = { 1, 2,..., n}, what is the largest family F of subsets of [n] satsifying F,F’EF-FnFzB for some BE B. Of particular interest are those B for which the maximum families consist of so- called “kernel systems,” i.e., the family of all supersets of some fixed set in B. For example, we show that the set of all (cyclic) translates of a block of consecutive integers in [n] is such a family. It turns out rather unexpectedly that many of the results we obtain here depend strongly on properties of the well-known entropy function (from information theory). -

Roughly, an actual infinity is a completed infinite totality. By contrast, a collection is potentially infinite when it is possible to expand it beyond any finite limit, despite not being a completed, actual infinite totality. The concept of potential infinity thus involves a notion of possibility. On this basis, recent progress has been made in giving an account of potential infinity using the resources of modal logic. Part I of this dissertation studies what the right modal logic is for reasoning about potential infinity. I begin Part I by rehearsing an argument|which is due to Linnebo and which I partially endorse|that the right modal logic is S4.2. Under this assumption, Linnebo has shown that a natural translation of non-modal first-order logic into modal first- order logic is sound and faithful. I argue that for the philosophical purposes at stake, the modal logic in question should be free and extend Linnebo's result to this setting. I then identify a limitation to the argument for S4.2 being the right modal logic for potential infinity. -

Cofinal Stable Logics
Guram Bezhanishvili Cofinal Stable Logics Nick Bezhanishvili Julia Ilin Abstract. We generalize the (∧, ∨)-canonical formulas to (∧, ∨)-canonical rules, and prove that each intuitionistic multi-conclusion consequence relation is axiomatizable by (∧, ∨)-canonical rules. This yields a convenient characterization of stable superintuition- istic logics. The (∧, ∨)-canonical formulas are analogues of the (∧, →)-canonical formulas, which are the algebraic counterpart of Zakharyaschev’s canonical formulas for superintu- itionistic logics (si-logics for short). Consequently, stable si-logics are analogues of subframe si-logics. We introduce cofinal stable intuitionistic multi-conclusion consequence relations and cofinal stable si-logics, thus answering the question of what the analogues of cofinal subframe logics should be. This is done by utilizing the (∧, ∨, ¬)-reduct of Heyting alge- bras. We prove that every cofinal stable si-logic has the finite model property, and that there are continuum many cofinal stable si-logics that are not stable. We conclude with several examples showing the similarities and differences between the classes of stable, cofinal stable, subframe, and cofinal subframe si-logics.
