DNA Barcode of Parodontidae Species from the La Plata River Basin - Applying New Data to Clarify Taxonomic Problems

Considering the difficulty in identifying some Parodontidae species from the La Plata basin and the absence of molecular data for the group, we aimed to test the effectiveness of DNA barcoding and discuss the importance of using different approaches to solve taxonomic problems. Eight species were analyzed with partial sequences of Cytochrome c oxidase I. The mean intraspecific K2P genetic distance was 0.04% compared to 4.2% for mean interspecific K2P genetic distance. The analyses of distance showed two pairs of species with K2P genetic divergence lower than 2%, but enough to separate these species. Apareiodon sp. and A. ibitiensis, considered as the same species by some authors, showed 4.2% genetic divergence, reinforcing their are different species. Samples of A. affinis from the Uruguay and Paraguay rivers presented 0.3% genetic divergence, indicating a close relationship between them. However, these samples diverged 6.1% from the samples of the upper Paraná River, indicating that the latter represents a potentially new species. The results showed the effectiveness of the DNA barcoding method in identifying the analyzed species, which, together with the morphological and cytogenetic available data, help species identification. Tellechea1, Franco Teixeira-de Mello2,3, Iván Gonzalez-Bergonzoni2,3 and Nicolás Vidal2 Catfishes may have two sonic organs: pectoral spines for stridulation and swimbladder drumming muscles. The aim of this study was to characterize the sound production of the catfish Iheringichthys labrosus. The I. labrosus male and female emits two different types of sounds: stridulatory sounds (655.8 + 230 Hz) consisting of a train of pulses, and drumming sounds (220 + 46 Hz), which are composed of single-pulse harmonic signals. Stridulatory sounds are emitted during abduction of the pectoral spine. At the base of the spine there is a dorsal process that bears a series of ridges on its latero-ventral surface, and by pressing the ridges against the groove (with an unspecialized rough surface) during a fin sweep, the animal produce a series of short pulses. Drumming sound is produced by an extrinsic sonic muscle, originated on a flat tendon of the transverse process of the fourth vertebra and inserted on the rostral and ventral surface of the swimbladder. The sounds emitted by both mechanisms are emitted in distress situation. Distress was induced by manipulating fish in a laboratory tank while sounds were recorded. Our results indicate that the catfish initially emits a stridulatory sound, which is followed by a drumming sound. Simultaneous production of stridulatory and drumming sounds was also observed. The catfish drumming sounds were lower in dominant frequency than stridulatory sounds, and also exhibited a small degree of dominant frequency modulation. -

E-mail: *[email protected] Abstract: First inventory of vertebrates in the private natural reserve El Morejon, Campana, Buenos Aires province. The knowledge of the species present in a natural protected area provides indispensable infor- mation to valorate it correctly and to plan its management. The private natural reserve El Morejón is located in Campana Department, Buenos Aires province, and 340 ha are protected, with natural and semi-natural en- vironments in Pampas ecoregion. The reserve has several artificial lagoons, two water courses that go across it, grasslands, flood plains, sedges and forest relicts. The objective of this work was to compile an inventory of the biodiversity of vertebrates registered in the reserve over eight years of periodic surveys. A total of 243 vertebrate species were recorded: 61 fishes, 150 birds, 11 mammals, 10 reptiles and 11 amphibians. Representative species of the environments protected in the reserve were recorded, as well as threatened species such as the Long-winged Harrier (Circus buffoni), the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) and the D’Orbigny’s turtle (Trachemys dor- bigni). The recorded biodiversity over the years turned out to be much higher than expected and these surveys allowed us to conclude that this anthropic wetlands can host numerous communities, being areas of breeding, refuge and migratory scale of fauna. -

Amato3 Received: 7 September 2017 /Accepted: 15 May 2018 # Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018 Abtract Structure of the helminth community of Megaleporinus obtusidens collected in Lake Guaíba was evaluated, and the results indicated that the diversity of helminth species was probably determined by fish behavior and eating habits. The influence of sex, weight, and standard length of hosts for parasitic indices was also analyzed. Sixteen helminth species were found parasitizing M. obtusidens, including the following: platyhelminths, with the highest richness, represented by one species of Aspidobothrea; four species of Digenea; and eight species of Monogenea; the latter, presented the highest prevalence. Rhinoxenus arietinus,foundin nasal cavities, had the greater abundance, and was the only species classified as core. The prevalence of Urocleidoides paradoxus was significantly influenced by the sex of the host; females had the highest values. Abundance was weakly influenced by fish weight and the body length of the hosts. Urocleidoides sp. had its abundance weakly influenced by the host weight. The other helminths were not influenced by biometric characteristics of the hosts. The total species richness was similar between male and female fish, and both had 14 helminth species of parasites. In total, 101 individuals of A. piracicabae and 3 individuals of A. itapicuruensis were collected in the Paraíba do Sul middle reaches. A description and diagnosis of both species based on morpho-meristic characters were provided. These fishes have been used as forage for larger fish species as well as bait for sport fishing, which may have facilitated their introduction in the Paraíba do Sul River from fish culture farms in the region.
