CHICAGO READER | APRIL 21, 2006 | SECTION THREE 5 [email protected] The Meter www.chicagoreader.com/TheMeter The Treatment A day-by-day guide to our Just Right Critic’s Choices and other previews friday 21 After a series of musical matchups that didn’t quite fit, EEF BARZELAY Debut solo albums tend three childhood pals put together their dream band, the 1900s. c toward the personal and/or confessional, so it was reasonable to expect that the songs on Eef Barzelay’s Bitter By Bob Mehr Honey (Spinart) would be more autobiographical than the ones he writes and sings for Brooklyn indie rockers Clem Snide. But he quashes that preconception with the disc’s opening line: “That was my ass you saw bouncing next to Ludacris.” Said ass belongs not to Barzelay but to a hip-hop video vixen who’s a nursing-school dropout and the daughter of a cleaning woman; on “Ballad of Bitter Honey” she explains how and why she manipulates men. Barzelay gifts her with just enough self-consciousness to lock her insights between wisdom and rationalization, his empathy never waning. Bitter Honey is just Barzelay and his acoustic guitar, which means his vocals are even more of a take-it-or-leave-it proposition than usual. Me, I say his affectations are more supple, and the tension between his nerdy nasality and confi- dent projection lends pathos to lines like “You looks so pretty when you have been drinking.” Prior to last year’s rocking and restless End of Love, Clem Snide had been growing qui- eter and more acoustic with each release, with Barzelay’s lyrics growing sunnier and less incisive. -

Logline When a man trying to forget his past stumbles across a box of unpublished music from his former life, he forms a small band which experiences local success and ultimately changes his life. Synopsis In William H. Macy’s moving directorial debut RUDDERLESS, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son's demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father who felt he’d been absent from his son’s life. Communing with his deceased son’s dashed dreams, Sam learns each song and eventually musters the will to perform one at a local bar. -
Si El Año Pasado El Poparb Celebró 10 Años Marcados Por La Sensación
Si el año pasado el popArb celebró 10 años marcados por la sensación de que aquella edición era un punto crucial en la historia del Festival, no tanto por los años pasados como por los que venían, esta edición del festival de Arbúcies presenta una programación que más allá del alto nivel artístico (Joan Miquel Oliver, The Excitements, The New Raemon, el Micro-Zènit de Montefusco, Pau Vallvé, Núria Graham o Le Petit Ramon, por citar sólo unos cuantos), destaca por inclusión de nuevas propuestas que pretenden convertir el popArb, aún más, en un evento único. Así, la primera gran apuesta, que ya habíamos anunciado, es la producción propia de este año: la colaboración entre Senior i El Cor Brutal y Eef Barzelay (Clem Snide) en el que dos monstruos de la canción visitan las tradiciones musicales de dos territorios tan lejanos y tan cercanos como Valencia y Alabama. La edición 2015, como decíamos, está llena de novedades y de propuestas arriesgadas, como comprobaréis con los cuatro experimentos que se presentarán el viernes: Por un lado, el #repteexperts, la propuesta en forma de conjura, perpetrada por Albert Miralles (iCat.cat) y Dani Vega (Mishima), que ni ellos mismos se atreven a definir: "una jam session de músicos de la indie? una reivindicación de los solos? una gran fiesta? "Divertido será, seguro. De la celebración del guitarrazo a la celebración de la improvisación: A Za! y la violinista Sara Fontán se unirán Miguel Ángel Blanca (Manos de Topo), Guillamino, Estel Boada y Gemma Tutusaus (Betty Belle) y sobre todo las voces del público del popArb. -
