HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD RECORD 1965 SEASON TWENTY-NINTH ANNUAL EDITION RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO... CHUCK COKER Mo one in recent years has done more to elevate Southern California Track & Field to a lofty peak, on a national basis and maintain it, than Chuck Coker, coach of the fabulous Southern California Striders. Chuck's interest has not only been in the highly skilled veterans who have claimed both national and international titles, but in the youngsters as well. His sterling leadership qualities have inspired all who have served under him. Taking over the helm of the Striders in 1962, Coker has led his stalwarts to three National A.A.U. crowns, placing third in 1962. In all, the Striders have now won eight A.A.U. National Championships in the last nine years, since 1957 — an amazing record. During the past year the Striders, with Coker1s magic guidance, cap- tured both the National A.A.U. Indoor and Outdoor titles and claimed top honors in the National Walking and Decathlon Championships. Bom in Washington, D.C., Chuck Coker excelled in athletics at Modesto (California) High School and Junior College and Stanford Univers- ity. From 1950 through 1961, Coker coached with exceptional success at Bonita High School, Modesto J.C., and Occidental College. Now the President of Universal Athletic Sales Co., Chuck Coker is a gentleman of outstanding character. His treasured friends throughout the world number in the thousands. Track & Field has no greater champion than Chuck Coker — one whom Helms Athletic Foundation proudly salutes with the dedication of this 29th annual edition of its Southern California High School Track & Field Record Book. © LA84 Foundation.
