Thus, planned Alat Free Trade Zone will attract investors from around the world and bringing profits to the government. Over course of this year, the Port of Baku has hosted many foreign dignitaries. What’s impact of the Port and FTZ to the regional collaboration between the Caspian states? Due to the increasing economic and social dynamics of Caspian economies, stronger transport infrastructure, including vital port developments that make up the Silk Route, will accelerate the trade of goods between Europe and Asia. In fact, the East-West international transport corridor aims to realize an effective, competitive road-rail- sea transit system among Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan and China. Today, ten major ports in the Caspian Sea including Aktau, Turkmenbasi, Astrakhan and Baku offer significant opportunities not only for national economies, but also for region’s sustainable development. The painted surface is further animated and enlivened with the addition of materials such as polyurethane foam over which an impasto application of paint is applied to build volume. In this series of paintings, Mahmudova explores the idea of impermanence. The works provide glimpses of Azerbaijan’s natural surroundings, urban environment and architecture—a backdrop that is undergoing constant and rapid change. Where one expects to see contrasting images of gleaming new construction alongside historic vestiges of Islamic architecture, Mahmudova instead focuses on modest structures on the peripheries of urban centers as they compete and coalesce with the native foliage.

    AHMET ÖĞÜT NO POEM LOVES ITS POET YARAT Contemporary Art Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan 18 March – 14 June 2020 (preview 17 March) Ahmet Öğüt, Still from No poem loves it poet, 2020, commissioned by YARAT, courtesy by the artist YARAT Contemporary Art Space is pleased to present a solo exhibition from the Amsterdam-based Kurdish artist Ahmet Öğüt (b. 1981), running 18 March – 14 June 2020. The show features two new, site-responsive commissions spanning across video and sculpture, entitled Hiçbir şiir, şairini sevmez (No poem loves its poet) and Living Beings Squatting Institutions. Referring to the physical and societal structures imposed by mankind throughout history – dividing both living beings and cultures – Öğüt’s works allude to how these structures are ultimately permeable states. The video installation Hiçbir şiir, şairini sevmez (No poem loves its poet) takes its title from a piece of Turkic graffiti the artist encountered during a visit to Sovetsky – a historic neighborhood in Baku now under demolition. Presented on a large modular LED wall, with original music composed by Sub- Botnick (Ahmet Öğüt and Maru Mushtrieva), the video features overhead footage spanning across Baku’s central districts. Two lost flight attendants can be seen within the rubble holding a road sign for Tolstoy Street, which formerly ran through the Sovetsky neighborhood. Observing the cultural evolution and radical urbanization of Azerbaijan - which has shared Soviet, Turkic and Azerbaijani histories - Öğüt gestures towards the succession of governing bodies who have attempted to remove traces of their predecessors via urban gentrification, social norms and economic powers. Interweaving throughout the exhibition space, an architectural installation mimics Baku’s city walls, originally erected to hide ‘undesirable’ areas; those which are occupied or are remains of Soviet culture.

Produced and supported by YARAT, a not-for-profit contemporary art organisation based in Baku, and curated by Dina Nasser-Khadivi, the exhibition will be open to the public from 3 April until 25 May 2014 at the recently-opened Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku. Designed by Zaha Hadid, the Heydar Aliyev Center is one of her most ambitious projects to date. Over 100,000 square metres including the surrounding grounds, the center’s walls that rise seamlessly from the surface of the surrounding plaza. The exhibition debuted at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, so its launch in Baku will bring the exhibition back to the region that inspired it. Courtesy Krasnogorsk Film Archive YARAT Contemporary Art Space announces a solo exhibition from multidisciplinary artist Taus Makhacheva, running 12 July – 6 October 2019. Living and working in her hometown of Moscow, Makhacheva’s varied practice includes installation, performance and film. The exhibition borrows its title from a circus term used to describe the haphazard, unchoreographed act involving all performers, which often marks the grand finale. Within this content, at YARAT the artist presents an interactive multimedia installation exploring Azerbaijani contemporaneity, through newly commissioned works detailing the USSR Circus tradition and wider concepts of history making. Key reference points include the story of the Berberov family, who once lived in Baku with their pet lion, King I. Achieving fame across the Soviet Union following a movie role, the lion was then mistakenly shot dead by a policeman. The exhibition also draws inspiration from the 1967 Soviet Circus documentary ‘National Circus’, investigating the representation of Soviet republics through distinct performance groups such as Azerbaijan’s Nazirov gymnastic group, the Uzbek clown Akram Yusupov and the Tashkenbaev family of tightrope walkers. The Soviet circus was a censorship-free and even anarchic space, almost out of regime control. While being part of the cultural underground, it remained a form of mainstream entertainment showing the connection between freedom in circus space and postmodern theorist Susan Melrose’s concept of theatre depoloticization. Through its unpicking of fact and fiction around the shared histories, the exhibition furthers Makhacheva’s ongoing interrogation into the lasting tensions between tradition, modernity and cultural authenticity from the transitional period of the Soviet into the post-Soviet landscape, towards the post post-Soviet futures.
