[email protected] Hotel Solutions January 2015 East Leicestershire Tourist Accommodation Study __________________________________________________________________________________________ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY __________________________________________________________________________________________ Study Purpose The main purpose of the study is to provide a clear understanding of the future potential for tourist accommodation development in the East Leicestershire LEADER Area and the role that Leicestershire County Council and its public sector partners can play to realise this potential, both through the LEADER Programme and in other ways. Current Tourist Accommodation Supply There are currently 145 tourist accommodation establishments in East Leicestershire offering a total of 3,751 letting bedspaces. The area has a wide range of different types of visitor accommodation, including some niche offers. The greatest bedspace capacity is in hotel accommodation and caravanning and camping provision. Other forms of serviced accommodation (inns, restaurants with rooms, guest houses and B&Bs) account for just under 14% of total bedspaces, while self-catering accommodation makes up 6.5% of the area's tourist accommodation supply. There is only one glamping (luxury camping ) site and nothing in terms of group and youth accommodation such as a youth hostel or bunkhouse barn. Two thirds of East Leicestershire's accommodation supply is in Harborough District and around a third is in Melton Borough. Just 5% of the area's bedspace capacity lies in the Charnwood part of the LEADER Area and there is no accommodation in the Blaby section. Quality varies significantly from luxury country house hotels to low grade hotels and pub accommodation. There is nothing currently in terms of boutique accommodation. The area's accommodation businesses are generally small in size. There are no large hotels, no sizeable holiday cottage complexes with leisure, no holiday lodge park of any scale and few 'super' holiday cottages that can cater for family and friend get togethers, celebrations and reunions. The area has very little accessible accommodation. East Leicestershire's accommodation supply has increased and improved in terms of hotel, self-catering and caravanning and camping provision but reduced in terms of B&B and pub accommodation supply. A Premier Inn budget hotel is about to open in Melton Mowbray and work is underway on a large new holiday lodge park at Asfordby and a major new canal boat marina at North Kilworth. i East Leicestershire Tourist Accommodation Study __________________________________________________________________________________________ Current Performance and Markets There is strong demand for all forms of tourist accommodation across East Leicestershire at weekends, other than for canal boat holiday hire and lower grade hotels and pub accommodation. Many accommodation businesses of all types trade at full capacity and turn business away on most weekends between April and October. Midweek occupancies are generally lower for most types of accommodation other than independent 3/4 star, budget and lower grade hotels, some 4 star inns, a few B&Bs , self- catering establishments and touring caravan and camping sites in the summer school holidays, and the Ragdale Hall health hydro. Key markets are: • Local corporate business during the week for 3/4 star , budget hotels and one country house hotel; • Residential conferences in the week for one luxury country house hotel; • Midweek demand from contractors for budget and lower grade hotels; • Weddings parties at weekends for hotels, inns, guest houses and B&Bs; • Weekend breaks for self-catering businesses and touring caravan and camp sites. There are clear shortages of hotel accommodation in Market Harborough on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday nights, and weekend shortages of self-catering accommodation and caravanning and camping provision across East Leicestershire. The new Premier Inn in Melton Mowbray should satisfy any shortages of hotel accommodation here and may challenge some of the town's independent 3 star hotels. ii East Leicestershire Tourist Accommodation Study __________________________________________________________________________________________ Future Growth Prospects There are good prospects for future growth in demand for all forms of tourist accommodation in East Leicestershire: • Accommodation businesses are optimistic about their future prospects; • The strategic context for growth is positive in terms of economic, tourism and population growth that will deliver greater demand for tourist accommodation;

This roughly means that rain and snow are both welcome in February, although snow is preferable. Well it’s certainly been black this year. Harborough District Council are encouraging parish councils to put in place Community Response Plans in the event of an incident such as severe weather. Tur Langton Parish Council has theirs and East Langton Parish Council’s is nearly completed (see p 7). The plan provides a guide as to how and where the local community may support the Emergency services in terms of information and providing predetermined resources where appropriate. Supported by a very keen team of teachers, the children sang with a wide range of acts including Tony Hadley and alongside street dance group Urban Sounds. This is part of our ongoing opportunities for the pupils to take part in musical performances to different audiences. As part of the Spark Festival, a celebration of the arts taking place in Leicester during February, we were delighted to welcome an IndoJazz band to perform to the children.

    KEYHAM NEWS A Load of Rubbish I wanted to say a huge thank you to all those who turned out to do the litter picking on Sunday 12 March. I was overwhelmed to see 16 people and we were able to do far more than originally anticipated on roads surrounding Keyham. In all we collected 30 bags of rubbish which were then placed next to the bins outside the Village Hall. What a service from Harborough District Council who collected the very next day! Litter Pickers about to do battle on 12 March (see opposite and page 6) Diary Dates There are simply too many heroes to thank April: individually but I would like to give a special 4th Film Night Double Bill in Village Hall 7:30pm mention to Steve Bailey who not only joined in 10th Parish Meeting in Village Hall 7:30pm on the day and stayed long into the afternoon, 24th WI Meeting Keyham Village Hall 7:30pm but also did a second weekend’s worth on his 27th Vestry & PCC Meetings Keyham Church 7:30pm own, collecting 28 bags and loads of other strange items. Church Services April: Lent, Holy Week and Easter Services: The intension is to run a second such event in 2nd Passion Sunday, 9am Holy Communion (Hungarton) June, just before Keyham Open Gardens (I am 9th Palm Sunday, 9am Holy Communion (Keyham) proposing the morning of Sunday 18 June?). A Holy Week: number of people thought it would be good to do Monday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Keyham) a social, so we will do just that; tea and cake at Tuesday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Hungarton) the Village Hall was mentioned! Wednesday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Skeffington) Maundy Thursday: In the meantime, I have been thinking of how we 7pm Holy Communion with (optional) foot washing (Billesdon) can keep the areas surrounding Keyham clean.

    Langtons’ and District Newsletter Spring So What Happened to Edition the Christmas Edition 2019 of the Newsletter? Well, I was just finishing laying up the edition when I slipped and fell in the garden resulting in a three and a half hour operation to put a rod in my B6047 Tur Langton right tibia leaving the fibia to find its own way back from the twist fractures I had sustained. I have to thank the surgeon’s and staff at the Royal Infirmary for the excellent care I received during my ten day stay and to all those who sent best wishes for my recovery. I’d also like to thank Sue Lambert for her help delivering the Newsletter in Thorpe Langton after she took over from Irene Ward, and for the news items she sent me over the years. We wish her well in her new home. Talking about new homes, I’d like to welcome, on behalf of the Langton Community Hall Committee, all the new residents that have just moved into Church Langton. We have had quite a number of families move into the village and we hope they settle in well and join in the community activities. Being ’out of commission’ showed how the magazine really needs help in the process of contacting advertisers and contributors, writing up articles and laying up etc. We also need someone to deliver the Newsletter in Thorpe Langton. If you think you can spare a little time every three months please let me know. And when you have an event you’re planning and have held, don’t forget to advertise and take photos to let us know what’s happening in the district.
