4 FLASHBACK: BARNES WINS NAIL-BITER LAST YEAR

Professional bowler and Hall-of-Famer, of Double Oak, Texas called on all his decades of experience, and then some, to win last year's title, and a record $13,060. Barnes barely made the cut from 171 to the top 32, qualifying in 29th place, after starting with a pair of 170's on the testing lane condition. He then went early to the loser's bracket in his second match, requiring a "long day at the office" to get back in the hunt for his first tilt at the coveted New Mexico Open crown. Barnes found form in a later match against hapless Al Wolfe lll beating him with 300 (worth $1,000 bonus from John Wilson's Target Line Bowling out of Flagstaff) and 257 in the two-game match. 6 LADIES & GENTLEMEN, HERE ARE YOUR CHAMPIONS:

The New Mexico Open has produced fourteen different winners from it's first fifteen tournaments. Albuquerque's John Young, a local Hall-Of-Fame member, won the first two in 2004 and 2005. It's been pretty much a parade of celebrated interstate winners since, starting with perennial Team USA bowler, David Haynes of Las Vegas in 2006, then Shawn Lee of Centennial, CO in 2007 followed by Junior Team USA member, Mark French of Ventura, CA in 2008 who used a 25-year-old original urethane ball to jump from 28th to top seed during match-play. Chris Klerk of Arizona won in 2009, then former USBC president, Andrew Cain, also from the Phoenix area, the next year. Devin Bidwell became the first of two Wichita winners in 2011, followed by Lonnie Waliczek in 2012, Former touring pro, Mike Miller, who won three national beating a young Kris Prather in the tenth frame. titles, a dozen regionals and was one of less than two dozen to Nathan Bohr of Austin won in 2013, ahead of Craig bowl 300 on network television, keeps his eyes on the target in a Nidiffer of Trenton, MI whose 285 championship game beat classic delivery pose. The last two have both enjoyed numerous Hall-of-Fame careers, Vernon Peterson of Winter Haven, FL beating in 2017 and Texan, Chris Barnes, whose bonus ball strike to win in 2018 by a single pin, was seen by over 33,000 internet viewers from 112 different countries. With the testing and always touchy lane conditions created for the NMO by former touring pro, Mike Miller, it might be a while before anyone matches the early histrionics of one John Young. And this year, one of the top four who get to the final rounds have the rare opportunity to bowl 300 and win a new car from the Pitre Kia/Buick/GMC dealership down the hill opposite Cottonwood Mall.

The New Mexico Open became the first tier 3 event on last year's World Bowling Tour and it's on again for 2019, with two times points available to every bowler, based on their finishing position. Stu Williams finished eighth here last year and as the only player with sufficient points year-to-date gained from tournaments around the world, Williams made up ground on those ahead of him and thereby qualified for the WBT year-end tournament, netting him thousands of dollars in prize-money. 13 THREE new BOWLING HEROES ADDED

We've included three more worthy recipients to our "Real Bowling Heroes" wall situated at the Center's front counter. First we have Angelique Fritts, who also won a recent Employee of the Month award. She is a cancer survivor, now in remission but under close watch. Angelique continued to bravely work through the chemotherapy and operations and is responsible for calling and texting league and tournament bowlers about upcoming events, as well as being house secretary for a large number of leagues. Lori Hoffman is also undergoing cancer treatments. She took the summer off but, along with husband Leo, has been a year-round league and tournament bowler since moving to Rio Rancho from the Baltimore area some years ago. Bill Putz, the "voice" of Cibola Cougars sports, is also a booming voice for bowling, having supervised the Cibola Bowling Club league here Tuesday afternoons since 2001, as well as sponsor and coach for their varsity high school team in the fall season. Three more than worthy additions to our real heroes of bowling at Tenpins & More.
