    The Promise of Cinema (http://www.thepromiseofcinema.com/) The Promise of Chaplin PAUL FLAIG The fifth and final act of Walter Ruttmann’s Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927) begins at the close of day, as electric lights stream from apartment windows, film palaces and car headlights. Ruttmann shifts from rain-swept, glistening streets to crowded sidewalks, as people go up and down one of Berlin’s most fashionable thorough-fairs, Tauentzienstrasse, looking for an evening’s entertainment. Such entertainment is represented first and foremost by the cinema, as we see the impressive facades of the Berliner Kino and the Atrium, the latter’s awning advertising in dazzling lights the New Woman-themed romantic comedy, Venus im Frack (Land, 1927). Outside a series of smaller, storefront cinemas, so-called Ladenkino, a placard for American cowboy Tom Mix and photographs of other movie stars surround a box office busy with customers queuing for tickets or waiting for their film-going companions. For Berlin’s own audience, a sense of expectation builds as we wonder what film and which stars these surrogates for ourselves are seeking inside the cinema. Concluding the film-themed introduction to his final act, Ruttmann shows, in a quick glimpse lasting no more than five seconds, the interior of a cramped Ladenkino to give an answer: a pair of all too familiar, ragged and over-sized shoes gambol forward, accompanied by equally iconic bamboo cane and baggy trousers. Uniting many of the various images selected is the photographers' use of dramatic lighting and innovative, experimental printing techniques, resulting in captivating, and often abstract or even surreal, renditions of their subjects in ordinary contexts. Erwin Blumenfeld (American, b. Germany 1897; d. 1969) Erwin Blumenfeld was born in Berlin, where he practiced photography as a young boy. From 1916-1918 he served as an ambulance driver in the German army. He began to write and paint at the time when the German Dada movement was becoming established. In 1918 Blumenfeld moved to Holland, where he was involved with the Dada movement in Amsterdam; four years later he opened a leather goods shop, the Fox Leather Company, on the fashionable Kalverstraat. In 1932 Blumenfeld moved Fox to a new location, where he discovered a darkroom in the back of the store that was left by a previous occupant, and began taking photographs again. During this period Blumenfeld's photographs and art became well known, and his work was included in two exhibitions at the modern art gallery Kunstzaal Van Lier in Amsterdam in 1932 and 1933, the second of which, "Dutch Faces," consisted of 50 photographic portraits. Blumenfeld's shop went bankrupt in 1935, and in 1936 he left Holland to establish himself in Paris as a professional photographer.

Ranging from the iconic to experiential and contemporary photography, this exhibition depicts how fashion photography is much more than merely a genre – but an embodiment of the fashion atmosphere at a specific moment, where portraiture represents the mood of that era. The exhibition "Shot in Style" bestows the work of illustrious fashion photographers such as Erwin Blumenfeld, Arthur Elgort, Guy Bourdin, Jeanloup Sieff, Martin Sokolsky, and Jim Lee. Each of whom is the master in his own technique of luring the viewer into a dream-like atmosphere reminiscent of vintage short films that transverse through decades of fashion. In addition, will also be exhibiting a select piece from Black Forest sculpture artist, Lars Zech.     — Fall/Winter 2015/2016 “When printing photographs I think the hybrid method, combining analogue and digital technologies, creates the best quality. The color of digital alone is like printing CMYK on aluminum foil … it looks boring, it’s not satisfactory. Digitally manipulating images gives you a much finer result than what you can achieve in solely an analogue way, yet I like to see the final image not on a computer screen but printed on paper, on a reflective surface. Because the world around us, except for the sky, is full of reflective, not backlit, surfaces.
