First, analysis of stomach content was performed to verify the feeding habits of the fish in their natural habitat. The behavior was then verified in aquarium experiments by feeding 2700 larvae to each fish. The feeding preference of the fish was evaluated in further experiments in which larvae and commercial fish food were offered, either separately or simultaneously. For both methods, the evaluation was performed by counting the number of adult mosquitoes that emerged during a 60-h observation period. The laboratory was main- tained at relatively stable temperature and humidity. The stomach content of 9 specimens of O. kneri captured in the Cuiabá River contained 26.5% insect larvae, with 11.5% exclusively from Diptera insects. The emergence of adults from insect larvae was not influenced by the presence of O. -

Phillips II: The Desert in María Teresa Andruetto: A Literal and Figurative Space (Under the direction of Alicia Rivero) The desert serves as a crucible for processing and creating truth in the novels, novellas, and short stories by Argentine writer María Teresa Andruetto (b. 1954). Simultaneously a literal and figurative space, the desert embodies Argentine history and economic development with particular focus on the northwest and Patagonia. Response to political turmoil and the introspective search for identity and family coalesce as we view protagonists encountering frontiers; coupled with alterity, gender, and language, this results in a new amalgamation that is a retelling of Esteban Echeverría’s “La cautiva.” The first chapter of this dissertation analyzes spaces as both literal and figurative oases, the interior as a microcosm of Argentina, and movement within the desert related to border crossing. The second chapter presents a macro-level view of geopolitics that focuses on an alternative reading of history in the desert, and the veracity of claims and truth are under a microscope in a manner that questions the official discourse of the Dirty War, as well as the creation of a national mythos. -
New Oxyuroid Nematodes of the Genera Ichthyouris and Spinoxyuris from South American Freshwater Fishes

Three hitherto unknown oxyuroid nematode species of the family Pharyngodonidae are described from the intestine of South American freshwater fishes, two of them being established as species new to science: Spinoxyuris annulata sp. n. from Myleus ternetzi (Norman) (Serrasalmidae) from French Guiana (Sinnamary River) and Ichthyouris ovifilamentosa sp. n. from Cichlasoma sp. (Cichlidae) from Amazonas (Negro River, São Gabriel da Cachoeira), Brazil. A third species, recovered from the same host as the latter (Cichlasoma sp.), was identified only as Ichthyouris sp. because of the absence of the male, although it probably also represents a new species. S. annulata differs from the only other congeneric species, S. oxydoras Petter, 1994, mainly in the absence of egg filaments, the location of an unpaired postanal papilla in the male, a distinctly longer spicule, and in an approximately double length of the body. Ichthyouris ovifilamentosa is closest to I. ro Inglis, 1962, differing from it principally in the structure of the cephalic end, the position of the excretory pore, and in the presence of filamented eggs. Ichthyouris sp. females differ from their congeners mainly in a characteristic structure of the cephalic end, the extent of lateral alae and the shape of their posterior ends, and in the character of egg filaments. -
Phylogenetic Relationships of the South American Doradoidea (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes)

O. Birindelli A phylogenetic analysis based on 311 morphological characters is presented for most species of the Doradidae, all genera of the Auchenipteridae, and representatives of 16 other catfish families. The hypothesis that was derived from the six most parsimonious trees support the monophyly of the South American Doradoidea (Doradidae plus Auchenipteridae), as well as the monophyly of the clade Doradoidea plus the African Mochokidae. In addition, the clade with Sisoroidea plus Aspredinidae was considered sister to Doradoidea plus Mochokidae. Within the Auchenipteridae, the results support the monophyly of the Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. The latter is composed of Tocantinsia, and four monophyletic units, two small with Asterophysus and Liosomadoras, and Pseudotatia and Pseudauchenipterus, respectively, and two large ones with the remaining genera. Within the Doradidae, parsimony analysis recovered Wertheimeria as sister to Kalyptodoras, composing a clade sister to all remaining doradids, which include Franciscodoras and two monophyletic groups: Astrodoradinae (plus Acanthodoras and Agamyxis) and Doradinae (new arrangement). Wertheimerinae, new subfamily, is described for Kalyptodoras and Wertheimeria. Doradinae is corroborated as monophyletic and composed of four groups, one including Centrochir and Platydoras, the other with the large-size species of doradids (except Oxydoras), another with Orinocodoras, Rhinodoras, and Rhynchodoras, and another with Oxydoras plus all the fimbriate-barbel doradids. Based on the results, the species of Opsodoras are included in Hemidoras; and Tenellus, new genus, is described to include Nemadoras trimaculatus, N. -

Iguazú National Park Argentina
IGUAZÚ NATIONAL PARK ARGENTINA Iguazú National Park shares one of the great waterfalls of the world with Iguaçu National Park in Brazil. The parks are also an island of the highly endangered Atlantic forest in an area denuded of forest for agriculture. It is one the most complete remnants of a beleaguered ecosystem, 95% of which, in Brazil and Paraguay, has been eradicated. It still harbours one of the great concentrations of biodiversity in Argentina: almost 44% of its avifauna and several threatened mammals. Threats to the site: the scenery and biodiversity of both sites is being degraded and there is no ongoing rehabilitation. They lie 5 km east of the confluence of the Iguazu and the Parana Rivers where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet. The Iguazú River forms its northern border and part of the southern border of Iguaçu Park in Brazil. Located between 25°31' to 25°43'S and 54°08' to 54°32'W. DATES AND HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT 1909: A park to protect the falls decreed by Law 6.712; 1934: The National Park officially established by Decree-Law 12.103; 1970: The National Reserve between Puerto Iguazú and the waterfall was excised from the Park by Decree-Law 18.801; 1 1971 The town of Puerto Iguazú was excised from the Park by Decree-Law 18.991; 1972: A further 12,600 ha incorporated into the Park by Decree-Law 19.473.
