The energetic, ever-swingin’ since birth, the 17-year-old was recently named one of seven rising Monty Alexander returns to Easton this Labor Day weekend for his stars for 2018 by USA Today network’s 201 Magazine. Adding to eponymous festival, featuring an exciting lineup that boasts some—if not the long list of accolades, Whitaker’s debut album Outta the Box, the—best jazz musicians in the country. which was released last year, was named “one of the best debut albums The Ninth Annual Monty Alexander Jazz Festival will be held Friday, of 2017” by New York City Jazz Record. This show starts at 11 a.m. August 31st to Sunday, September 2nd, at the Avalon Theatre. Saturday’s matinee show at 2 p.m. highlights an extraordinary range of American and Brazilian musicians, featuring tenor/alto saxophonist Legendary jazz piano master Monty Alexander Harry Allen, renowned for his inventive tone that’s rooted in tradition. Allen will lead a salute to Stan Getz and the Getz/Gilberto collabora- tion with Antonino Carlos Jobim, which resulted in an award-winning album by the same name. Later that evening, at 8 p.m., Monty Alexander takes the stage. Considered one of the top five jazz pianists ever, Alexander’s musi- cal expression combines elements of the blues, gospel, calypso, and reggae. Geboren 1919, wurde er mit seinem Trio in den frühen 1940er-Jahren als swingender Sänger und brillanter Pianist berühmt. Pate, Sr. Life Dates: December 5, 1923- Place of Birth: Chicago Heights, Illinois, USA Residence: Fairview, TX Occupations: Jazz Bassist; Music Arranger Biographical Note Jazz bassist, rhythm and blues arranger John W. Pate, Sr., “Johnny Pate,” was born December 5, 1923 in blue collar Chicago Heights, Illinois. Pate took an interest in the family’s upright piano and learned from the church organist who boarded with them. He attended Lincoln Elementary School, Washington Junior High and graduated from Bloom Township High School in 1942. Drafted into the United States Army, Pate joined the 218th AGF Army Band where he took up the tuba and played the upright bass in the jazz orchestra. In 1946, after his tour of service, Pate moved to New and played the upright bass in the jazz orchestra. In 1946, after his tour of service, Pate moved to New York City where bassist Oscar Pettiford helped him get started. Pate played with the Red Allen - J.C. Higginbotham Combo and jazz violinists Stuff Smith and Eddie South. Returning to Chicago, he arranged musical numbers at the Regal Theatre with Red Saunders. Pate studied at the Midwest Conservatory of Music from1950 to 1953 and continued to perform in the 50s with Dorothy Donegan, Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams, Count Basie and Ahmad Jamal. Forming the Johnny Pate Trio and Combo in 1957, he was also “house bassist” for Chicago’s Blue Note. Johnny Pate’s bass solo on “Satin Doll” is featured on the album Duke Ellington Live At The Blue Note (1959).

Liner notes for Commemorative CD of Johnny Pate Concert, by Devra Hall 1 of 6 On this balmy Sunday afternoon, jazz fans flock to a theatre on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. People are trying to get tickets to this afternoon’s sold-out concert. “We don’t have to sit together,” a couple tells the young lady behind the counter. “How about standing room?” someone else asks. Minutes before show time, concert producer Ken Hanlon is still fixing tickets. “If anybody tells you a good story, and you have one, give it to them,” he instructs the box office staff, adding, “A few tickets won’t put a dent in the bill.” Hanlon, trim, with steely gray hair, short beard, deep blue eyes and an affable demeanor, has brought together eight of the world’s greatest jazz performers, and they are here to pay tribute to the life and legacy of a man who has profoundly touched their musical lives. At $25 a seat, it is the most under-priced ticket in town. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the lights dim and the auditorium grows silent. More than five hundred and sixty fans and friends fill each and every seat, as well as standing-room spots allowed by the fire marshal, in the Judy Bayley Theatre, part of the UNLV Performing Arts Center. I am seated with my husband in the eighth row, slightly off-center toward stage right. Our tickets read, “Arnold Shaw Popular Music Research Center presents Johnny Pate 80th Birthday Celebration Concert.” Johnny who? Johnny Pate and my husband are close friends, have been for more than 60 years, so I know the answer to this question.

Summer/Autumn 2015 The Monty Alexander Jazz Festival by William Edgar Collaboration, simply stated, is working with others to achieve common goals. Collaboration characterizes many different fields, from medical research to business endeavors to study groups. Jazz music is by definition a collaborative endeavor. Whether large or small, a jazz band means collective individualism. Jazz culture is all about sharing. One learns from the pioneers. On stage, musicians encourage one another to excel; they inspire or even push each other in a dialogue where the musical whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The Monty Alexander Jazz Festival in Easton is musical collaboration at its best. Always held over Labor Day weekend, we are coming up on our sixth year. Collaboration requires leadership. The true leader of this festival is its artistic director Monty Alexander. He has been called the Mozart of jazz, because, like the classical prodigy he has been playing the piano since childhood. The word prolific is inadequate to describe the way music exudes from his every pore. Coming from Jamaica he has a unique way of combining Caribbean sounds with mainstream jazz. Besides playing at venues all over the world Monty loves to encourage younger talent. The Festival is a natural place to introduce gifted performers to an audience that may not yet know them. Coltrane, Joe Lovano, Sunny Stitt and Dexter Gordon. The names of Jazz is about innovation within tradition. The Monty Alexander Jazz musicians he has collaborated with reads like a who’s who of jazz, and yet Festival has developed several traditions: opening night at the Academy he is his own musical person.
