One of the most common questions we’re asked is why do the PBA oil patterns we use in the Sport league in our center sometimes play different during than they do on TV? Well, there are several factors that influence your overall ball reaction besides just the oil pattern and those factors change from center to center, and even from day to day in the same center. The type of lane surface (wood or synthetic, and what type of synthetic) and the age of lane surface will play a huge role in ball reaction. Also, when bowling on patterns such as Cheetah or Viper, where you tend to play close to the channel, how the lanes were installed also will play a role in how much the ball will hook from the outside part of the lane. Add in changes is temperature and humidity in the bowling center, and the different types of lane oil and cleaner used around the country, and you can see a lot of variation in ball reaction. One other thing is the person you are bowling with and how they are playing the lanes. On the PBA Tour, the rev rates are significantly higher than what you’ll see in your Sport league. This usually means that on tour the lanes will break down more, and hook more than what you’ll see in three games of league. Plus, there are more bowlers playing in a similar part of the lane, which helps break down the pattern into a more favorable scoring environment by creating a defined hook spot. -

With apologies to Charles Dickens, those “novel” words are an apt description of the circumstances America’s best male and female bowlers are experiencing today. The men’s Professional Bowlers Tour is exciting, dynamic and evolving toward greatness… the women’s Tour, where the best female bowlers in the world are supposed to display their talent, is M.I.A. So, when the time came for the Bowlers Journal International editorial staff to choose its 2005-06 All- American Teams, the men’s choices were relatively easy. The women’s picks involved a few “X-factors” not normally considered in the process, but BJI is committed to keeping women in the spotlight, Tour or no Tour. The men’s BJI squad is captained by a young man who had a dominant year. Tommy Jones, Mauldin, S.C., took home four PBA titles in the 2005-06 Tour season and topped the money list with $301,700. The four players joining Jones on the first team were Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla.; Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y.; Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas; and Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla. Duke had eight television appearances last season, but it wasn’t until his seventh that he captured his lone title and the 23rd of his career. Allen, captain of the 2004-05 BJ All-American Team, slipped a little, but still had a terrific year with two titles. Scroggins won once and earned more than $200,000 for the first time in his career, easily his best year on Tour. -
