The Bearcats’ Darnell Burton hit a three-pointer for a 13-point edge, 61-48, with just 4:14 remaining in regulation. But UNCG (20-10) rallied on a 7-0 run triggered by Scott Hartzell’s trey at the 3:44 mark, and were within 61-55 with 1:20 to go. Eric Cuthrell’s free throw with 8.8 remaining pulled UNCG as close as it would get, 65-61. UNCG outrebounded the Bearcats 39-38 including 20-13 on the offensive boards. Seven-foot center Jason Collins scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to held Stanford to an 89-60 win over UNCG in the First round of the NCAA West Regional. UNCG, which finished 19-12, was led by David Schuck’s 16 points, Ronnie Taylor’s 15, Courtney Eldridge’s 13 and Jay Joseph’s 12. Joseph’s dozen were all on three-pointers in the opening half. The Cardinal finished the first half on an 11-2 run to break the game open and lead 48-27 at intermission. Collins his six of nine shots from the floor and hit all seven free-throw attempts in the first 20 minutes of play. Stanford, the top seed in the Regional, improved to 29-2 on the season.
