TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers visit the San Jose Sharks tonight in their 38th game of the season, 18th on the road and their final game of 2016. The Flyers are 20-13-4 for 44 points after a 6-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night. The Flyers are 1-3-1 in their last five games since a 10-game winning streak from Nov. 27 – Dec. 14. This is the second game in a three-game road trip for the Flyers, which will conclude on Sunday in Anaheim before the club returns home to host the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

TRAVEL ADVISORIES The Flyers are on their annual holiday season road trip, vacating the Wells Fargo Center while Disney On Ice takes over the building for a lengthy set. For the second consecutive year, this year’s trip features only three games; this year’s trip will span seven days between departure from and return to Philadelphia, while last year’s was eight. The three-game schedule matches last year as the fewest on the trip since a three-game trip in the 1999-2000 season. After Wednesday’s setback in St. Louis, the Flyers are now winless in their last nine games during holiday trips; their last win came at the end of a 5-1 run on the trip during the 2013-14 season.

Here is how the Flyers have fared on their holiday road swing in recent years. (Cities are listed in order of schedule from start to finish of stretch from Christmas until end of stretch except where noted. Bolded opponents are wins, italics are OT/SOL)

2015-16: 0-3-0 (ANA, SJS, LAK) 2014-15: 0-4-1 (NSH, PHX, COL¸ CAR, NJD) 2013-14: 5-1-0 (EDM, VAN, CGY, COL, PHX, NJD) 2011-12: 2-2-1 (COL, DAL, NYR, TBL, PIT) (trip was Dec. 19-23 & 27-29, earlier end due to hosting Winter Classic) 2010-11: 3-2 (VAN, LAK, ANA, DET, NJD) 2009-10: 3-1-1 (CAR, NYI, NYR, BOS(WC), OTT) 2008-09: 2-2-2 (CHI, CBJ, VAN, ANA, LAK, WSH) 2007-08: 5-1 (TBL, FLA, NJD, TOR, ATL, NYR) 2006-07: 3-5 (FLA, TBL, CAR, NYI, NYR, BOS, OTT, WSH) 2005-06: 7-2-1 FLA, ATL, CAR, WSH, BOS, NYR, WSH, NJD, CHI, DET)

FLYERS VS. SHARKS

This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. San Jose will visit the Flyers on February 11.

This is the second consecutive year the Flyers are visiting San Jose on December 30, and also the second year in a row that the game represents their final game of the calendar year. The Flyers are trying to snap a five-game winless skid (0-3-2) against the Sharks, with their last win coming here in San Jose on Feb. 3, 2014. The Flyers went 13-2-2-1 against San Jose in 18 meetings over the Sharks’ first 10 seasons of existence, but since the 2001-02 season, the Flyers are 1-11-2-5 in 19 games against San Jose.

2015-16 SEASON SERIES Thursday, November 19 – San Jose 1, Flyers 0 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers and Sharks played a scoreless regulation, but it was Melker Karlsson who converted the game’s final chance on a two-on-one in overtime to give San Jose the 1-0 win. The Flyers were outshot 10-6 in the first period but turned the tables and outshot San Jose 28-11 the rest of the way. However, they couldn’t get any of those past Martin Jones, who earned his third shutout of the season. Steve Mason made 20 saves in the losing cause. Stars of the Game: 1 – Martin Jones; 2 – Melker Karlsson; 3 – Steve Mason.

Wednesday, December 30 – San Jose 4, Flyers 2 at SAP Center: San Jose erased a 2-1 deficit with three third period goals – two on power plays and one right after a power play ended – to take a 4-2 win over the Flyers. After a scoreless first period, the teams traded tallies in the second starting when Joe Thornton roofed a PPG past Steve Mason at 9:53. Then with 4:11 left in the period, Claude Giroux shot a puck directly off a faceoff that beat Martin Jones, tying the game at the second intermission. The Flyers took the lead just over four minutes into the third when Jake Voracek knocked a puck loose at the Flyers blue line to Wayne Simmonds, who persevered through a check and sprung Sean Couturier on a breakaway that he converted at the 4:19 mark. But San Jose responded with a power play goal from Brent Burns about 90 seconds later, and then took the lead on a Joe Pavelski goal that came two seconds after another Flyers penalty expired. Pavelski’s second came with 49 seconds left and iced things for the Sharks, who outshot the Flyers 33-19. Mason turned away 29 shots while Jones stopped 17. Stars of the Game: 1 – Joe Thornton; 2 – Joe Pavelski; 3 – Logan Couture.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers reached the 20-win mark before Christmas for the first time in five years, having last done so during the 2011-12 season. With a win tonight, they would have a 10-win month of December, which would be their first 10-win month since March 2012 (11-3-2). The Flyers are 11-3-1 in their last 15 games, which included their first 10-game winning streak in 31 years. The Flyers have points in eight consecutive home games dating back to Nov. 27 vs. Calgary (7-0-1), and are 10-2-3 on home ice since the start of November.

The Flyers rank 10th in the NHL in goals per game at 2.95 and sit fifth in overall goals scored at 109. Their shutout loss to New Jersey on 12/22 was just the second time they’ve been shut out this season. The Flyers have 29 power play goals, which puts them one off the league lead despite a six-game run without a PPG that came to an end on Wednesday in St. Louis.

In a 17-game stretch from Nov. 12 to Dec. 14, in which the Flyers went 13-3-1, they scored 3.06 goals per game and allowed 2.29 per game. In the last five games (1-3-1), they have scored 1.40 goals per game and have allowed 3.20.

Ivan Provorov leads the Flyers in average time on ice (TOI) this season at 21:06 per game, but over the past 12 games has averaged 22:36. He has played 19 or more minutes per game in 24 consecutive games. The NHL has kept track of TOI since the 1998-99 season, and since that time, the Flyers record-holder among rookies at season’s end is Braydon Coburn in 2006-07, when he played 20:58 per game over 20 games after he was acquired by the Flyers at the 2007 trade deadline. Provorov ranks tied for second in scoring among all NHL rookie defensemen and is fourth in average TOI among that group.

Provorov is tied for 10th overall in scoring among rookies, while Travis Konecny is two points ahead, tied for seventh. Toronto is the only other team with multiple players among the top 12 rookie scorers in the league.

Steve Mason has started 19 of the past 21 games for the Flyers, going 11-6-2 with a 2.47 GAA and .917 sv% during that time. Only Arizona’s Mike Smith has played more minutes than Mason since November 14. Mason played his 200th game as a Flyer on Dec. 19, becoming just the fourth goaltender in franchise history to appear in 200 games for the club. He joins Doug Favell, Ron Hextall and Bernie Parent. Mason needs two wins to move into third place in franchise history, behind only Parent and Hextall. Mason had a personal eight-game winning streak during the Flyers’ larger 10-game streak, which was a career high. He recorded a 2.33 GAA and a .926 sv% during that run.

The Flyers defense has combined for an NHL-leading 91 points (22g-69a) and has recorded a point in 32 of 37 games. The Flyers do not have a player among the top 30 blueliners in scoring in the NHL, but have received at least nine points from each of the seven D to appear in 20 or more games.
