Thailand instantly came to mind as a great entry point into the vast and diverse continent of Asia, home to some of the world’s most spectacular birds from giant hornbills to ornate pheasants to garrulous laughingthrushes and dazzling pittas. I took a little over three weeks to explore the central and northern parts of this spectacular country: the tropical rainforests of Kaeng Krachen, the saltpans of Pak Thale and the montane Himalayan foothill forests near Chiang Mai. I left absolutely dazzled by what I saw. Few words can describe the joy of having your first Great Hornbill, the size of a swan, plane overhead; the thousands of shorebirds in the saltpans of Pak Thale, where I saw critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper; the tear-jerking surprise of having an Eared Pitta come to bathe at a forest pool in the late afternoon, surrounded by tail- quivering Siberian Blue Robins; or the fun of spending my birthday at Doi Lang, seeing Ultramarine Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Sunbird and more among a 100 or so species. Overall, I recorded over 430 species over the course of three weeks which is conservative relative to what is possible. Thailand was more than a birding experience for me. It was the Buddhist gong that would resonate through the villages in the early morning, the fresh and delightful cuisine produced out of a simple wok, the farmers faithfully tending to their rice paddies and the amusing frost chasers at the top of Doi Inthanon at dawn.

Of the 23 threatened shorebird species worldwide, six are endemic to New Zealand. We review the status of New Zealand's endemic shorebirds and examine the impact on them of various threats, particularly predation by introduced mammals. The conservation status of the 10 extant species (three oystercatchers, one stilt, four plovers and two snipe) is outlined and the factors that predisposed them to predation by introduced mammals are summarised. Individual species accounts are presented, including data on population trends, known or suspected impacts of predation, identi®cation of important predator species, other threats, and conservation measures currently in place or required. One species and two subspecies are extinct, three species are con®ned to predator-free islands and another is found only on the Chatham Islands group. Six survive on the mainland but three have declined to varying degrees and are assigned threatened status by Collar et al. (1994). Only one plover and two oystercatchers are still relatively numerous and/or widespread. Rats, cats and mustelids have had the greatest overall impacts. Conservation measures in place to mitigate the eects of introduced predators include the formulation of recovery plans, predator control around breeding areas, captive breeding and rearing programmes and the founding of new populations by translocation.

Foreigners and Ex-pats flock there for the beautiful scenery, great infrastructure, and delicious cuisine among other cultural aspects. For birders, it has recently caught up to big names like Borneo and Malaysia, in terms of respect for the avian delights it holds for visitors. Our twelve-day Highlights Tour to Thailand set out to sample a bit of the best of every major habitat type in the country, with a slight focus on the lush montane forests that hold most of the country’s specialty bird species. The tour began in Bangkok, a bustling metropolis of winding narrow roads, flyovers, towering apartment buildings, and seemingly endless people. Despite the density and throng of humanity, many of the participants on the tour were able to enjoy a Crested Goshawk flight by Forrest Rowland lovely day’s visit to the Grand Palace and historic center of Bangkok, including a fun boat ride passing by several temples. A few early arrivals also had time to bird some of the urban park settings, even picking up a species or two we did not see on the Main Tour. For most, the tour began in earnest on November 15th, with our day tour of the salt pans, mudflats, wetlands, and mangroves of the famed Pak Thale Shore bird Project, and Laem Phak Bia mangroves.

An amamii Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker at Amami Natural Forest. In 2013, August 8th to 10th, I had a chance to visit one of the northern islands in the Ryukyu chain, Amami Oshima, for two days. Among birdwatchers, the island is primarily known for three endemic or near-endemic species: Amami Woodcock, Amami Thrush and Lidth’s Jay. On my way to Kyoto, I had noticed that the exorbitant regular rate of €1000 return from Osaka’s Itami airport had been reduced by 40% to fill up the next week's flights. I grasped the moment, knowing that I had a vacant weekend, even though the €600 certainly was not cheap for such a short return journey. Japan Airlines (JAL) has a monopoly on the route and it shows in price structure. After an Itami airport departure, the JAL flight arrived almost on time at Amami Airport at 16.50, the five minute delay being extensively apologized. I was soon collected by a First Rent-A-Car (formerly, Mazda Rent-A-Car) representative and we went to their office two minutes away. As almost always in Japan, I was a much appreciated customer. My car was upgraded to a sporty Mazda Axela GT, I got a coat hanger for jacket and they carried my suitcases all the way. Everything went smoothly, despite the fact that there was hardly any common language. The difficult parts of documentation were clarified by an English-speaking colleague on phone.

Wilson Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona 7, Kingston, Jamaica The introduced small Asian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) has been widely implicated in extirpations and extinctions of island taxa. Recent studies and anecdotal observations suggest that the nests of terrestrial island species are particularly vulnerable to mongoose predation, yet quantitative data have remained scarce, even for species long assumed to be at risk from the mongoose. We monitored nests of the Critically Endangered Jamaican Rock Iguana (Cyclura collei) to determine nest fate, and augmented these observations with motion-activated camera trap images to document the predatory behaviour of the mongoose. Our data provide direct, quantitative evidence of high nest predation pressure attributable to the mongoose, and together with reported high rates of predation on hatchling and juvenile iguanas (also by the mongoose), support the original conclusion that the mongoose was responsible for the apparent lack of recruitment and the aging structure of the small population that was ‘re-discovered’ in 1990. Encouragingly however, our data also demonstrate a significant reduction in nest predation pressure within an experimental mongoose-removal area. Thus, our results indicate that otherwise catastrophic levels of nest loss (at or near 100%) can be ameliorated or even eliminated by removal trapping of the mongoose. We suggest that such targeted control efforts could also prove useful in safeguarding other threatened insular species with reproductive strategies that are notably vulnerable to mongoose predation (e.g., the incubation of eggs on or underground).

Articles on migrants (4.3 ± 2.2 [mean ± standard deviation] pages) were longer than those on residents (2.5 ± 1.8 pages). These differences might reflect the fact that there are more migrants in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway since the ratio of migrant to resident species is 1.4:1 or 2:1 depending on which species are considered to use the flyway. Even when corrections are applied for this imbalance (for the 1.4:1 ratio only), a disproportionate number of pages and articles have still been devoted to migrants. Overall, it appears that there is a bias towards research and conservation effort on migratory species, with the cumulative magnitude of the bias to date equating to the number of pages in 3.8 average-length editions of Stilt . I speculate on some of the causes of the apparent bias.

    Japan Ryukyu Islands Extension 20th to 26th November 2013 (7 days) Ryukyu Robin by Glen Valentine Tour Leaders: Glen Valentine & Bryan Shirley Trip Report compiled by: Glen Valentine Trip Report - RBT Japan Ryukyu Islands Ext Nov 2013 2 Tour Summary Our 2013 Rockjumper birding tour of Japan’s Ryukyu Islands was an immense success and produced every single endemic on the beautiful, forested islands of Amami and Okinawa. These small islands make up the southern tip of Japan and were the focus of this pre-tour extension. Highlights were many and included such legendary species as the fairly recently discovered Okinawa Rail (only described in 1981), the impressive and extremely localized and rare Okinawa (Pryer’s) Woodpecker (listed as one of the world’s 300 rarest birds with less than 600 individuals remaining), the noisy and extremely striking Lidth’s Jay, mega Amami Woodcock, seldom-seen Lidth’s Jay by Glen Valentine Amami Thrush, little-known Ryukyu Flycatcher (split from Narcissus Flycatcher by some authorities), Whistling Green Pigeon and the stunning Ryukyu Robin! Our adventure began in the country’s capital, the bustling Tokyo and the world’s most populous city! Starting our birding the next morning at a productive site nearby (the Sakurada Moat) before our flight to Amami-Oshima, we were delighted by the numbers and great, close views of a good assortment of waterfowl. Species included Gadwall, Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck and at least 14 Falcated Duck that included 11 stunning males, as well as a single American Wigoen, a rather rare bird in Japan.

Herpestes auropunctatus (formerly known as H. javanicus) is native to south Asia and has been introduced to Trinidad and Tobago (and other Caribbean islands) for control of rats and snakes. This animal is small and slender with short legs (Fig. 1). Its head is elongated with a pointed muzzle and small ears (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). The mongoose’s tail is muscular at the bottom and tapers gradually throughout its length, it also possess five toes that contains retractable claws. Its body length is between 50-67 cm for females and 54-67 cm for males. Its weight ranges from 305-662 grams. Their bodies are covered with short hair that is coloured pale to dark brown with golden flecks (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). Both males and females have an extensible anal pad with glands that are ducted lateral to the anus. ECOLOGY. Its habitat range is the largest in the family Herpestidae. It can thrive in a large range of habitats inclusive of agricultural land, coastal areas, natural forests, planted forests, grassland, wetland areas. However, climatically it is best able to survive in tropical zones (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). Carnivorous, with a varied and opportunistic diet, this diet is dependent on the habitat it is in and the food availability.
