  • Moroni: Angel Or Treasure Guardian? 39
Mark Ashurst-McGee: Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? 39 Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended.

  • Evening Prayer, Guardian Angels
LiturgyLiturgy of of thethe Hours Hours Evening Prayer October 2, 2020 { Memorial – Guardian Angels } during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament concluding with Benediction and Reposition Stand and make sign of cross God, come to my assistance. Lord, make haste to help me. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. Hymn I shall praise the Savior’s glory, Of his flesh the mystery sing, And the blood, all price excelling, Shed by our immortal King: God made man for our salvation, Who from Virgin pure did spring. Born for us, and for us given, Born a man like us below, Christ as man with man residing, Lived the seed of truth to sow, Suffered bitter death unflinching, And immortal love did show. On the night before he suffered, Seated with his chosen band, Jesus, when they all had feasted, Faithful to the law’s command, Far more precious food provided: Gave himself with his own hand. Word made flesh, true bread of heaven, By his word made flesh to be, From the wine his blood is taken, Though our senses cannot see, Faith alone which is unshaken Shows pure hearts the mystery. Therefore we, before him falling, This great sacrament revere; October 2, 2020 2 Ancient forms are now departed, For new acts of grace are here, Faith our feeble senses aiding, Makes the Savior’s presence clear. To the everlasting Father And his Son who reigns on high, With the Holy Ghost proceeding Forth from each eternally, Be all honor, glory, blessing, Power and endless majesty.

  • THE NATURE and POWER of SATAN Theorizing About the Nature
CHAPTER THREE THE NATURE AND POWER OF SATAN Theorizing about the nature, origin, and cosmological status of Satan occurs among the selected writings, especially among the later ones. However, there is an obvious lack of "speculative" interest in the sense of seeking to work out a complete cosmology of evil. Concepts as to the origin, abode, and ultimate future of Satan are often very diverse, and there are only a small number of referen ces. An analysis and interpretation of the nature of Satan as conceiv ed by the early Christian tradition will be therefore necessarily less comprehensive than a discussion of his activities. There are some basic understandings as to the nature and power of Satan common to most of the selected writers, however, and they are best summarized by the New Testament phrases: Satan, the "prince of the power of the air," "ruler of demons," "ruler of the world," and "god of this age." A. SATAN: PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR 1. Origin of Satan For the most part, the New Testament writers make no theoreti cal assertions as to the origin of Satan. However, a number of passages by choice of words and phraseology seem to reflect the idea of Satan as a fallen angel who is chief among a class of fallen angels, an idea which appears frequently in apocalyptic literature.1 II Peter 2 :4, for example, refers to the angels that sinned and were cast into hell. Jude 6 mentions "the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling ..

  • Teaching Christian History in Seminary: a Declension Story
Teaching Christian History in Seminary: A Declension Story Walter Sawatsky Introduction Do good theology and good pastoring necessarily require deep interest in the Church’s history? A low view of Christian history has long been a free church affliction, apparently due to an exaggerated belief in the sole authority of Scripture. When scholars in my circle recently began talking about a “usable” history, I soon realized this discussion was not really about history. Rather, it was a theological misuse of history, an effort to achieve theological certainty where the history referred to fits the desired theology. Christian history is about the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church – the “body of Christ” as the primary New Testament image – for which Christ gave himself. Sending the flawed human individuals making up the body of Christ into the world as ambassadors of the good news was a divine risk, done with a “sending” of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide that motley crew of humans “into all truth,” to pick one of Jesus’ descriptors for the Spirit’s role in Christian history. It has proved very tempting to select out a usable “exceptional” chosen people to present a story line more easily seen as Holy Spirit-guided. So, I have often started a Christian history class with the question, Do you love the Church?, in order to start probing the light and shadow sides of the story. This reflection on teaching history in a seminary is shaped by the conclusion I have come to that the troubling legacy of the Anabaptist- Mennonite tradition, as seems true of most free churches, is that we do not love the Church and do not believe the Holy Spirit led it into all truth, except for our small part of the story, properly sanitized.
