Commentary by Paul Scholl When the space shuttle Atlantis soon lands after its final flight, our nation will take its place in “Coach” as we hitch a ride with other nations to return to space. Even long-time NASA scientists and astronauts cannot understand why this program would be terminated by the President before we even had another option for returning manned flights to space on the drawing board. I remember as a child watching the first step of man on the moon. I remember as our nation prayed together as one for the safe return of Apollo 13, then learning of their heroics. I remember watching the first launch of the space shuttle. I will watch and remember its last. It is a sad commentary on our national leaders that they find it impossible to manage our money well enough to sustain, develop and grow our space program for the betterment of all mankind. NASA could easily be funded simply by cutting the gross waste and incompetence in Washington D.C. We must demand of our leaders far better than what they are accomplishing now. We must demand that they do what is best for all men and women. Politics is an unfortunate characteristic of human nature. The exploration of space brings us closer to our divine nature. My vote is for the divine.
