he TaT team scoured the Expo to find the most interesting and innovative pieces of equipment that they considered would be the most helpful in a Tbusy automotive workshop. The winning tool was an electronic tester from PLUSQUIP and runner-up was a set of wrenches from GearWrench. These two tools were chosen from seven finalists.

PLUSQUIP: The gadget voted the the complete movement or any seizing best at Expo by the TaT team was during operation, and monitor the current PLUSQUIP’s electronic EGR, throttle draw during all operating cycles on its body and actuator tester. GearWrench: The with a twist so impressed the TaT team that they awarded GearWrench the runner-up award for the best tool at Expo. It’s called the XL X-Beam combination ratcheting wrench set. The 12 pieces range from 8 mm to 19 mm but what impressed the team members was the innovative half-twist in the shank which they claimed gave greater control over the wrench and less impact on their hand when struggling with tight nuts. A uni student drove his clapped out old Holden into a CAR TOON workshop, looking for some repair advice to keep the jalopy going. The mechanic took one look and announced, ‘What you really need is the radiator cap solution.’ Trying not to look too ignorant, the student said, ‘Do you mean the radiator cap isn’t holding enough pressure?’ ‘That’s part of the problem,’ the mechanic said. ‘You need to lift the radiator cap and drive another car under it. ‘Then you can replace the radiator cap and that should solve your problem.’

Burson Auto Parts

Burson Auto Parts: The Kincrome diagnostic workstation that Burson Auto Parts brought to Expo received good marks from the TaT team. As well as the ball bearing slide drawers it has a moulded plastic work surface with an adjustable laptop or iPad stand. There’s also a retractable gas-strut-assisted rear pegboard for hanging those important tools for the job you’re working on. Photo: TAT team members Rod Maher (left) and Jason Smith (right) study the Kincrome workstation with the help of Ernie Editor’s Choice: Using his nose for news, TaT editor Ken Linning, Burson’s technical sales and training diagnostics man in Newton went sniffing out the most interesting people at Queensland. Expo. He found what he was looking for at the Terrain Tamer stand when the inventor of FlashLube turned up BOSCH unexpectedly. Wolfgang Kleunner’s face was all over the posters on the stand and suddenly there he was, in the flesh. Long retired to the good life on a hobby farm in north eastern Victoria, Wolfgang apparently makes rare appearances, so the Terrain Tamer crew were beside themselves when Wolfgang turned up unannounced. Wolfgang dedicated his life to solving valve seat recession. In 1979 he developed a unique liquid metal that was able to coat and protect valves for an extended period of time. His original Valve Saver fluid has seen many imitations come and go but his secret formula is protected internationally and reportedly does a great job. The Don Kyatt Group bought the Flashlube brand in 1995 and the gas installers loved it from day one. It is now Australia’s number one selling lead replacement additive. But if Wolfgang’s appearance wasn’t enough, Wolfgang was accompanied by his partner, no less than a famous Australian self-taught engineer, designer and inventor, Dianne Boddy. Over a 55-year working span, Dianne Bosch: The new FWA 9000 wheel alignment system allows fast created approximately 2,000 successful designs covering and accurate alignments. ear axle steering has been on the engineering The steering angle produced by the AKC system on the rear agenda for some time, with the technology wheel is relatively small, at up to around three degrees, which improving driving safety and dynamics. is enough to make a substantial difference to the overall feeling R of the car. Previous shortfalls such as expense, complication and fuel inefficiency have been overcome by ZF’s introduction of active Because AKC operates without any mechanical steering kinematics control (AKC) that adjusts the toe angle on the rear linkages and functions purely by wire, the system can be wheels. integrated into the active control system of a wide variety of cars. The Automotive Technician 26 Again, by stretching and squeezing both axes (X and Y) you can marvel at the precision of the changing waveform in harmony with the scan tool’s commands. Merging DMM knowledge with DSO It is important and fundamental to use existing knowledge as a peg and expand 13 your horizon during the diagnostic process to encompass the use of the DSO. 7 For example, a VZ Commodore with a communication issue (pic 7), would traditionally have you reaching for scan tool and attempting to communicate with each and every control module (pic 8). But, to your disappointment, all fail to 14 communicate. So you decide to check the CAN (controller area network) Bus loop resistance at DLC (diagnostic link connector) pin 6 and pin 14 (pic 9) and measure the resistance while 8 the system is in sleep mode (pic 10). To your disappointment, it is about 62 ohms which means the wiring is OK. You now decide to measure the voltage with the 15 DMM (pic 11) and it measures about 2.5 V but unfortunately you know too well that DMMs only display the average of a fast moving square wave and not the true value – not so useful. But connect the DSO’s alligator clip to the chassis earth and the active probe 9 to either of the pins. Keep altering the setting of the X and Y scales and observe 16 the square wave. Don’t be too concerned about waveform interpretation, more of that later. With your next customer, why don’t you do away with the DMM and the scan tool and take the plunge with only the DSO. Here’s another test. The vehicle is a Nissan Patrol and the speedometer is inoperative (pic 12). You quickly carry out 10 a mechanical check of the sensor and it’s OK (pic 13). You then investigate the circuit diagram and identify the terminal of the speedo signal on the binnacle (pic 14). The DSO is then connected to the terminal 17 (pic 15) and the sensor is physically rotated by hand (pic 16). And presto, there is a sine wave (or some kind of a waveform) that varies in harmony with the rotation of the sensor. 11 How simple is that? By the way, measuring waveforms is not limited to problematic cars. If ever you need to measure any waveform, you simply back probe the terminal with a 18 pin and connect the DSO’s alligator clip to an earth (block) and the active probe onto the pin as illustrated by the following examples: Citroën ECM connector back probed with investigative pins connector (pic 17), then a Ford throttle position sensor (pic 18) and finally a Ford airflow meter (pic 19). So, dive in with your new DSO and learn to swim. I guarantee you will enjoy it. 12 19

The Automotive Technician 28 Street Cred with Hayley Windsor It’s goodbye

eginning with the first issue of this magazine back in February 2008 Hayley Windsor has regaled us with her quirky view of life at the wheel, through the eyes of a self-confessed ignoramus when it comes to motor cars. She fessed up in her first column thus, ‘To us mere Bmortals, lifting the bonnet and checking out the engine compartment is the ultimate exercise in futility. In fact, I’m not sure that there’s an engine under there any more.’ Hayley didn’t just represent female drivers, but took a sometimes critical look at cars, their technology and their failings from a consumer’s perspective. But this magazine now sadly announces Hayley’s departure from these pages. After travelling the world, crewing on yachts, teaching in Scotland and interviewing industrial heavies in all corners of the globe, Hayley has settled into a new job and a new life in Sydney, and feels that her TaT days, while enjoyable, must come to an end. So on behalf of our readers and the rest of the TaT team, ‘Goodbye Hayley, and best of luck in your new role. We’ll miss you.’
