In this study, we rediscovered some snake species after quite a long time during the fieldwork in 2014 and 2015 on Gökçeada (Imbros). Natrix tessellata (Laurenti, 1768), which was found in Kaleköy, and Elaphe sauromates (Pallas, 1811), which was detected and photographed around the Education and Resting Association, Ministry of Justice, Republic of Turkey in the vicinity of Şirinköy, were new records for the island’s snake fauna. All specimens except E. sauromates (Pallas, 1811), were found dead in the field. Morphological features of N. tessellata were examined in detail and results were compared with previous studies. Locality information and measurable and countable features of the other specimens are given. Key words: Reptilia, Snakes, new record, rediscovery, Imbros, Gökçeada, Turkey. No subspecies are currently recognized.[5] Geunus Montivipera Species: M. xanthina Description Dorsally, it is grey or white with a black zig- Binomial Name zag stripe. Melanistic individuals exist. ISSN 1836-5779 (Online) Montivipera xanthina divided and a new subgenus of Eurasian Vipers for the Vipera raddei Boettger, 1890 species group (Squamata: Serpentes: Viperidae). RAYMOND T. HOSER 488 Park Road, Park Orchards, Victoria, 3134, Australia. Phone: +61 3 9812 3322 Fax: 9812 3355 E-mail: snakeman (at) snakeman.com.au Received 5 January 2016 Accepted 27 July 2016, Published 1 August 2016. ABSTRACT Numerous species of European viper snake (Squamata: Serpentes: Viperidae) have been described in recent years. This includes most recently five new species in the V. latastei Bosca, 1878, complex by Hoser, (2015). Included were three new species from Europe and two more from northern Africa. Continuing the formal division of putative viper species on the basis of morphology, distribution and genetics, this paper divides the putative species Montivipera xanthina Gray, 1849 as currently recognized into three easily defined species with one being further subdivided into two subspecies. As no names are available for these taxa, all are named in this paper according to the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride et al. 1999) for the first time. The need to formally recognize these species is urgent noting the environmental degradation going on where these snakes occur, potentially threatening populations, underpinned by the political instability in the relevant countries. This includes existential threats to governments and ruling elites, which means that wildlife conservation will probably not be a main priority of governments and most resident citizens for the foreseeable future.

Adults of Montivipera xanthina generally feed on small mammals, birds and lizards, although juveniles often prey on orthopterans and centipedes. During the fieldwork carried out on May 28, 2001, there were recorded parts of the scorpion body Protoiurus kraepelini (von Ubisch, 1922) in excrements of an adult female of M. xanthina in Muğla (southwestern Turkey). Preface Scientific experts from eight countries gathered to share their views and experience on the latest research on natural products for cancer prevention and therapy. The traditionally used herbal medicines, medicinal plants, plant extracts, fractions, and phytochemicals for cancer prevention and therapy were discussed throughout the meeting. The scientific program comprised of 12 plenary lectures, 23 oral presentations, and 72 posters, providing an opportunity for more than 130 natural product scientists to present their research in three days. Abstracts for plenary talks, oral presentations, and posters were published as proceedings of the meeting in the special issue of Proceedings, Volume 1 and Issue 10 (http://www.mdpi.com/2504-3900/1/10). The aim of this biannual meeting was to foster discussion and disseminate the results of the research on natural products that are used for cancer prevention and therapy. During the meeting, the scientific committee members of the meeting who attended the conference had been selected as judges to evaluate all of the oral and poster presentations and the three best oral and poster presentation awards have been granted to the young scientists.

In this study, polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis and densitometry methods were used to analyze venom extracts of three Montivipera albizona specimens collected from Sivas (Central Anatolia, Turkey). The venom secretion was colorless in juvenile and light yellow in mature individuals. The venom proteins of M. albizona could be separated into 10, 11, 12 fractions or fraction groups. Besides, the electropherograms of the venom protein samples showed both sex-based and age-dependent qualitative and quantitative variations. Antivenom-Antidotes The Efficacy of Early Fab Antivenom versus Placebo Plus Optional Rescue Therapy on Recovery from Copperhead Snake Envenomation Charles J. Gerardo and Eric J. Lavonas on behalf of the Copperhead Snakebite Recovery Outcome Group* [email protected] Background: Copperhead envenomation accounts for >40% of the approximately 9000 snake envenomation patients treated annually in the United States. Although copperhead envenomation rarely produces shock, medically significant bleeding or death, local tissue injury can be significant. Previous studies have shown limb dysfunction lasting several weeks in most of patients, and at least a year in some copperhead victims. Whether early antivenom administration improves the severity or duration of this limb dysfunction is not known. Objective: To compare the recovery of copperhead envenomated patients treated with antivenom to those receiving placebo, with rescue therapy available for patients who develop severe envenomation. Methods: We conducted a multi-center, double-blind, placebo controlled study of treatment with Fab antivenom (Crotalidae Polyvalent Immune Fab® (ovine origin), BTG, West Conshohocken, PA) (FabAV) versus placebo for mild and moderate copperhead envenomated patients. Patients ≥12 years old and presenting within 24 hours were randomized 2:1 to receive 6 vials of FabAV or placebo, repeated once if necessary to achieve initial control. Standard maintenance dosing (2 vials of FabAV or placebo every 6 hours for 3 doses) was then administered.

  • Venomics: a Mini-Review
Review Venomics: A Mini-Review David Wilson * and Norelle L. Daly ID Centre for Biodiscovery and Molecular, Development of Therapeutics, AITHM, James Cook University, Cairns, QLD 4878, Australia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +61-7-4232-1707 Received: 1 June 2018; Accepted: 18 July 2018; Published: 23 July 2018 Abstract: Venomics is the integration of proteomic, genomic and transcriptomic approaches to study venoms. Advances in these approaches have enabled increasingly more comprehensive analyses of venoms to be carried out, overcoming to some extent the limitations imposed by the complexity of the venoms and the small quantities that are often available. Advances in bioinformatics and high-throughput functional assay screening approaches have also had a significant impact on venomics. A combination of all these techniques is critical for enhancing our knowledge on the complexity of venoms and their potential therapeutic and agricultural applications. Here we highlight recent advances in these fields and their impact on venom analyses. Keywords: venomics; genomics; transcriptomics; proteomics; pharmacomics; bioinformatics 1. Introduction The complex mixtures of diverse, selective and potent natural products found in the venom of venomous creatures has garnered significant interest and is well-published as a source of potential therapeutic leads [1–4]. This interest stems from >50% of all approved drugs arising from natural products or their derivatives [5], including six venom-derived drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) [6]. In addition to therapeutic potential, compounds from venoms also have potential as bioinsecticides [7]. Although the natural chemical libraries contained within venoms are often touted as rich sources of therapeutic and bioinsecticide leads, one of the major challenges facing venom researchers has been the characterization of molecules in highly complex venom mixtures [8].
