D. Cornell University 2009 Hostage and captive-taking were fundamental to medieval warfare and medieval society in general. Despite their importance, however, until recently, these practices have received very little scholarly attention. In particular, the relationship between gender and these practices has been virtually ignored. The evidence, however, belies this neglect, and the sources are littered with examples that not only illuminate the importance of women and gender to these customs, but also how women used them to exercise power and independence militarily, politically, socially, and religiously. Moreover, women worked within a patriarchal society that was often deeply distrustful of their participation in hostage and captive situations in any capacity. This thesis attempts to fill the gaps in the scholarship and illuminate the importance of considering gender when examining hostage- and captiveship. It pulls together evidence from a wide variety of historical and literary sources to suggest that women were not only victims of these processes as hostages and captives themselves, but were also active participants in them as hostage and captive takers, ransomers, and holders. Moreover, they were sometimes but not always accepted in such roles.

For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God.

I. Introduction The Scripture, the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, present God as a liberator and Redeemer. The people of Old Testament experienced Yahweh as go’el in their exodus from Egypt, the land of slavery, to a land promised by Yahweh Himself, a land flowing with honey and milk, a land of freedom and joy. In the New Testament Jesus Christ through the message, ministry and mission revealed Himself to be the Redeemer. His preferential option for the poor and oppressed of the society manifested itself in the way of his praxis and culminated in his death and resurrection. The tradition of the Catholic Church presents lives of men and women who responded to the redemptive mission of God in their own space and time; but my particular concentration will be on John de Matha, a master of theology at the University of Paris. He accepted the challenging call /role of the Redeemer-God to continue His redemptive mission by ransoming the captives of his time. John de Matha grew up in a time when Europe was undergoing a lot of changes. The transitions affected both the Church and society. At the Church level, the Christians were seeking inspiration in their past and there was a special attraction to the primitive church in the Acts.

(Report errors to [email protected]) CHAPTER XI THE VARIOUS RELIGIOUS ORDERS The various Orders existing in England in pre-Reformation days may be classified under four headings (1) Monks, (2) Canons Regular, (3) Military Orders, and (4) Friars. As regards the nuns, most of the houses were affiliated to one or other of the above-named Orders. I. Monks i. Benedictines St. Benedict, justly called the Patriarch of Western Monachism, established his rule of life in Italy ; first at Subiaco and subsequently at Monte Cassino about A.D. 529. The design of his code was, like every other rule of regular life, to enable men to reach the higher Christian ideals by the helps afforded them in a well- regulated monastery. According to the saint's original conception, the houses were to be separate families independent of each other. It was no part of his scheme o establish a corporation with branches in various localities and countries, or to found an "Order" in its modern sense. By its own inherent excellence and because of the sound common-sense which pervades it, the Rule of St. Benedict at once began to take root in the monasteries of the West, --- 213--- till it quickly superseded any others then in existence. Owing to its broad and elastic character, and hardly less, probably, to the fact that adopting it did not imply the joining of any stereotyped form of Order, monasteries could, and in fact did, embrace this code without entirely breaking with their past traditions.

    True Cross of Our Lord Ex ligno crucis (wood from the Cross) “There they crucified him, and with him two others” John 19:18 The Cross on which Christ was Crucified was brought from the Holy Land to Rome by St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine in the Fourth Century. The largest remaining portions of it are in Santa Croce Church, in Rome. Due to scarcity, the Church no longer issues relics of the True Cross. This particular reliquary containing extraordinarily large portions of the True Cross was once given as a gift by the bishop of Limoges (France) to the bishop of Marseilles (France) at his Episcopal consecration (see official documentation on back). “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 Fragment of the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary De velo (from the Veil) Profile: Mother of Jesus. Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Betrothed of Saint Joseph. Born: unknown, perhaps 20BC; celebrated on 8 September. Our Lady’s Veil has been venerated from the earliest centuries since she was assumed into Heaven. This particular portion was encased within this theca within the Vatican. It was given to this ministry to allow for world wide veneration.

    St. Felix Of Valois (April 16, 1127–November 4, 1212) St. Felix of Valois was a hermit and a co-founder with St. John of Matha of the Trinitarian Order. He was born in 1127 and was surnamed Valois because he was a member of the royal branch of Valois in France. At an early age, Felix renounced his possessions and retired to a dense forest where he devoted himself to prayer and contemplation. John of Matha, a young nobleman, priest, and native of Provence, sought Felix out and put himself under his spiritual direction. He proposed that they found an order for the ransom of Christians held captive by non-Christians, a consequence of crusading and of pirating along the Mediterranean coast of Europe. Felix, though seventy years of age at the time, readily agreed. They set out for Rome in the depth of winter. They had letters of recommendation from their bishop, and Pope Innocent III received them with kindness. After lengthy study and prayer, he granted his approval of the new order under the name “Order of the Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives.” Felix returned to France to establish the Order and was received with great enthusiasm. He was granted 20 acres of the wood where he had built his first hermitage. Within forty years, the Order possessed six hundred monasteries in every part of Europe. St. Felix remained in France to look after the interests of the congregation. From the very outset, a special dedication to the mystery of the Holy Trinity has been an important element of the Order’s life.
