  • Tennis DIVISION I MEN’S
Tennis DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Southern California wins third national title in a row; Nguyen clinches championship with thrilling three-set victory: Daniel Nguyen made a shot to earn a break point, fl ipped off his hat, started taking off his shirt and then danced around the court until his Southern California teammates could reach him and pile on. Nguyen downed Sanam Singh, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4, to give Southern California a 4-3 victory against Virginia for the Trojans’ third consecutive NCAA men’s tennis title May 24. They became the fi rst three-time defending champions since Stanford won four in a row from 1995 to 1998. “I remember watching Prakash Amritraj take off his shirt when we won the 2002 title,” Nguyen said. “I thought about doing it and then thought, ‘nah, let’s not do it.’” Seconds later he was tackled to the ground amid a wave of Trojans. “It was an incredible match,” Southern California coach Peter Smith said. “It all came down to the last match. How many teams win three in a row? These boys did it. This coaching staff did it.” Nguyen’s fi nal game featured a solid return game. He dived to save one shot and ended up getting the point. That led to the chip shot from the net that landed a few yards from Singh. “It was an amazing atmosphere,” Nguyen said. “It was unbelievably loud and it was hard to focus. I just seized the moment and took advantage.” Of his second point in the last game, he said: “I just saw the ball and ran as fast as I could and dove for it.

  • Excerpt of Tennis: Winning the Mental Match
ALLEN FOX, Ph.D. 1120 INVERNESS PLACE SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA. 93401 805-788-0801, 805-788-0802 FAX E-MAIL: [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE “Tennis: Winning the Mental Match” A new book by Allen Fox, Ph.D. Dr. Allen Fox earned a Ph.D. in psychology at UCLA and is a former NCAA champion, Wimbledon quarterfinalist, a three-time member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, and coached the Pepperdine tennis team to two NCAA finals. He currently consults with tennis players on mental issues, appears in his popular 1-Minute Clinics on the Tennis Channel, and lectures world-wide on sports psychology. He is the author of three previous books, “IF I’M THE BETTER PLAYER, WHY CAN’T I WIN?”, “THINK TO WIN,” and “THE WINNER’S MIND, a Competitor’s Guide to Sports and Business Success.” Dr. Fox is an editor and writer for Tennis Magazine and for his web site, allenfoxtennis.net. Tennis is more difficult mentally than most other sports. Because of its one on one personal nature, it feels more important than it is. Competitive matches can become highly stressful, and losing is painful. Emotions tend to get out of hand, with fears and nerves becoming difficult to control. Confidence comes and goes; the scoring system is diabolical; and everyone is at risk of choking, even the greatest players in the world. This book attacks these and other issues faced by players of all levels. Dr. Allen Fox’s solutions are logical and straightforward, and most importantly, they have been tested on court and they work.

When he finally received a completed draft, he turned that writing around with the speed and thoroughness of a seasoned editor. Tim’s own hunger for scholarship also served as a model for how a historian should act. I’ll always cherish the conversations we shared over Metropolis coffee— topics that ranged far and wide across historical subjects and contemporary happenings.

  • Suggested Readings for Junior Tennis Players
Suggested Readings for Junior Tennis Players Now is a great time to continue reading, start reading, or listen to tennis-related books to help hone your skills. As tennis athletes, we can learn from other sports and the world's best athletes. The 5 pillars for success in sports are technical skills, tactical awareness, physical power, mental skills, and character.* The book list is divided into those 5 categories plus 2 additional categories (inspirational and biographies/autobiographies/ stories). We hope you enjoy reading or listening them! (As wild as it may sound, I either own or have read all of these! This is in no way a complete list of books as we did not intend to slight any author in the process of creating this list.) For your convenience, we have linked the books to websites if you wanted to get them. A lot of these books have versions that are much lower cost or even free on Kindle, Audible, NOOK Book, or eBook versions. This list is in no particular order besides divided by category. Age suggestions are sometimes noted. 1. TECHNICAL SKILLS Tennis Science – How Player and Racket Work Together by Bruce Elliott, Machar Reid, Miguel Crespo (2015). University of Chicago Press. Each chapter explores a different facet of the game—learning, technique, game analysis, the mental edge, physical development, nutrition for performance & recovery, staying healthy, & equipment, organized in a series of questions. Amazon Barnes&Noble Play Better Tennis in 2 Hours by Oscar Wegner (December 15, 2004). McGraw-Hill Education, US. If you never seem to play up to your potential, don’t blame yourself—blame the coach who taught you a lot of uselessly complex techniques.
