Day One – After checking into one of the 38 hotels in Bloomington, freshen up quickly and get ready to shop ‘til you drop at Mall of America®! Spend the day shopping until your credit card can’t take anymore, enjoying no sales tax on clothing or shoes. Browse through 520 stores, from high end to Minnesota unique. Macy’s, Nordstrom and Sears are stores that anchor the Mall of America. Visit high end stores, such as Gucci, Chanel, and many up and coming designer boutiques in Nordstrom’s. Michael Kors, Stewart Weitzman, Kiehl’s, Vera Bradley and Hugo Boss stores bring designer labels to Bloomington and smiles to shopper’s faces. Also, visit Old Vine Wine & Spirits to select a favorite Minnesota or regional wine to take home. Stop in to M.A.C. for the hottest makeup makeover in the mall. Professionals in the store will help find the latest colors for you and equip you with products to do it yourself at home. Evening – Enjoy dinner at CRAVE.     The Saint Books An overview The two book series indexed here are only indirectly related to each other. In each case the books were issued by the company that was then publishing The Saint Mystery Magazine. However, the magazine had changed hands between the two series, including a year’s hiatus between the two publishers. The two constants over the magazine’s history were the editorial direction of Leslie Charteris and the direct editorship of Hans Stefan Santesson. The publisher of Great American Publications was given as Henry Scharf in issues of The Saint Mystery Magazine. The ownership of Fiction Publishing Company remains a mystery. One would expect it to be revealed by the annual Post Office-mandated Statements of Ownership in the magazine, but this incarnation did not have a second- class mailing permit so they never printed one. The indexing of each series presents its own problems. The Saint Mystery Library are almost all anthologies. The volumes list Leslie Charteris as the editor of the series, which I have stretched to give him credit as editor of the individual volumes. The Saint Novels were all reprints of previously published Saint books, all by Leslie Charteris. Obviously an author Index of the book titles for either series would have only one author: Leslie Charteris. Thus I have dispensed with that level of Author Index and produced a combined Author Index, containing both the book titles and the contents. The book titles are printed in italics. The usual citations for prior publications of the books didn’t fit into this format, so I annotated them into the Numerical Listings instead.

    1 INTRODUCTION Charteris and His Work Every year the UK Crime Writers' Association holds its prestigious “Diamond Dagger” ceremony. The Diamond Dagger is awarded annually to crime writers whose careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a significant contribution to crime fiction published in the English language. Winners have included Ian Rankin, Eric Ambler, John le Carré and Ruth Rendell. On 7 May 1992 the Chairman of the Association presented the Diamond Dagger to the 84-year old Leslie Charteris, whose fiction featuring the gentleman warrior, vigilante adventurer and modern knight-errant Simon Templar, known as the Saint, first appeared in 1928 and is still being published today. Outperforming both heroes and villains and a destroyer of society's enemies for decades, the central protagonist of Charteris’ twelve novels, thirty-four novellas and twelve volumes of short stories excelled in popularity. As Clive Bloom has warned, figures relating to book sales, at least in Britain, “must always be approached with considerable caution,”1 but based on known editions and reprints, publishers’ remarks and information from Charteris’ letters, it has been estimated that Charteris’ sales have topped forty million.2 While small in relation to the huge output and marketing of authors like the early twentieth-century thriller writer Edgar Wallace, or the famous Agatha Christie whose sales run into billions, Charteris’ sales record for his more modest output remains very substantial. Publication of his fiction tailed off in the 1980s, but from December 2012 Mulholland Books at Hodder and Stoughton commenced republication of thirty-five Saint titles.
