The town was founded in Saxon times and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. What is now known as Tower Hill was the location, according to evidence, of Sarsen stones. The medieval church of St Michael’s Abbey is the tomb of Napoleon III, one of France’s most celebrated military leaders. Napoleon’s wife, Eugenie de Montijo, and his son, the Prince Imperial, are also laid to rest in the tomb. The Basingstoke Canal is an ideal place for quiet walks and the River Blackwater, which is on the Hampshire/Surrey border, is where the first international prize fight between John C Heenan and Tom Sayers took place Farnborough is home to a weekly market in the town square and there are a variety of restaurants and country pubs. In particular was the Tumble Down Dick Pub, now a McDonald’s restaurant, which has been situated on the A325 Farnborough Road since the 17th century. It is believed that the property was linked with Richard Cromwell. During its renovation in 2014, an early advert for Simmonds Brewery was found and is now on display on the side of the building. The world-famous Farnborough International Air Show takes place every two years and is a major event for the aerospace and defence industries, as well as being a very popular public air show on the last two days which is open to the public. A vibrant business community is in and around the town including Cody Technology Park, the home of QinetiQ’s headquarters, Farnborough Aerospace Centre, a business park to the south of the airport, and IQ Farnborough which is currently under development and will incorporate new housing, retail outlets and car dealerships. The existing wind tunnels, which are listed, are being refurbished and the frame of a 1910 Airship Hanger, originally dismantled, has been rebuilt (it is now Grade II listed) as a spectacular centrepiece. Farnborough is a short distance from the M3 motorway whilst the A325 and A331 are the main thoroughfares through the town. There are three railway stations connecting to Basingstoke, Reading, Ash Vale, Guildford, Gatwick and London Waterloo. Farnborough Airport is also nearby and is the location of the bi-annual international air show. As well as the French emperor, Napoleon III, and his family, other notable former residents of Farnborough include T E Lawrence, David Mellor, Anne Robinson, the cricketer Shaun Udal, Arthur English, Belgian film director Robbe de Hert and actress, Janet Wright. Ÿ Three railway stations – Farnborough (Main), Farnborough North and North Camp. Ÿ The A325, A331 and M3 are easily accessible and link with Basingstoke, Reading, Guildford, central London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports via the motorway network. Ÿ Excellent choice of schools including Farnborough Hill, All Hallows Catholic School, Salesian College, Fernhill School and Cove School. Ÿ Leisure amenities including shopping centres, restaurants, bars and pubs, museums, sports clubs for football, rugby, cricket, hockey, basketball, motorsports, golf courses, the Alpine Snowsports Centre, cinemas, theatre and the Farnborough Leisure Centre for swimming, gym, indoor bowling, squash and ten pin bowling.
