A Multi-Platform Pseudo Terminal API Project Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment for the Masters' Degree in Computer Science By Qutaiba Mahmoud Supervised By Dr. Clinton Jeffery ABSTRACT This project is the construction of a pseudo-terminal API, which will provide a pseudo-terminal interface access to interactive programs. The API is aimed at developing an extension to the Unicon language to allow Unicon programs to easily utilize applications that require user interaction via a terminal. A pseudo-terminal is a pair of virtual devices that provide a bidirectional communication channel. This project was constructed to enable an enhancement to a collaborative virtual environment, because it will allow external tools such to be utilized within the same environment. In general the purpose of this API is to allow the UNICON runtime system to act as the user via the terminal which is provided by the API, the terminal is in turn connected to a client process such as a compiler, debugger, or an editor. It can also be viewed as a way for the UNICON environment to control and customize the input and output of external programs. Table of Contents: 1. The shell is the wrapper around the system: a communication means between the user and the system The shell is the manner in which the user can interact with the system through the terminal. The shell is also a script interpreter. The simplest script is a bunch of shell commands. Shell scripts are used in order to boot the system. The user can also write and execute shell scripts. Shell – p. 3/55 Shell - which shell? There are several kinds of shells. For example, bash (Bourne Again Shell), csh, tcsh, zsh, ksh (Korn Shell). The most important shell is bash, since it is available on almost every free Unix system. The Linux system scripts use bash. The default shell for the user is set in the /etc/passwd file. Here is a line out of this file for example: dana:x:500:500:Dana,,,:/home/dana:/bin/bash This line means that user dana uses bash (located on the system at /bin/bash) as her default shell. For those who have struggled with learning programming languages in the past, this may come as a pleasant surprise. This chapter describes some of the main features of Python and its use as a programming language to write scripts for ArcGIS. The logic and struc- ture of this book and the accompanying exercises is described, followed by some examples of how Python is used. The final part of this chapter intro- duces Python editors that make it easier to write and organize your code. 1.2: Exploring the features of Python Python has a number of features that make it the programming language of choice for working with ArcGIS. Among them: It’s simple and easy to learn: Python is easy to learn compared with other highly structured programming languages like C++ or Visual Basic. The syntax is simple, which gives you more time to focus on solving problems than having to learn the language itself. It’s free and open source: Python is free and open source software ( FOSS ). You can freely distribute copies of the software, read the source code, make changes to it, and use pieces of it in new free programs. One of the reasons Python works so well is that it has been created, and is constantly being improved, by an active and dedicated user community. The FOSS nature of Python makes it possible for Esri to distribute Python with ArcGIS software. Sys, Shutil, and OS Modules
This video will introduce the sys, shutil, glob, and os modules. 1 The sys module contains a few tools that are often useful and will be used in this course. The first tool is the argv function which allows the script to request a parameter when the script is run. We will use this function in a few weeks when importing scripts into ArcGIS. If a zero is specified for the argv function, then it will return the location of the script on the computer. This can be helpful if the script needs to look for a supplemental file, such as a template, that is located in the same folder as the script. The exit function stops the script when it reach the exit statement. The function can be used to stop a script when a certain condition occurs – such as when a user specifies an invalid parameter. This allows the script to stop gracefully rather than crashing. The exit function is also useful when troubleshooting a script. 2 The shutil module contains tools for moving and deleting files. The copy tool makes a copy of a file in a new location. The copytree tool makes a copy of an entire folder in a new location. The rmtree tool deletes an entire folder. Note that this tool will not send items to the recycling bin and it will not ask for confirmation. The tool will fail if it encounters any file locks in the folder. 3 The os module contains operating system functions – many of which are often useful in a script. -

The Linux Command Line Presentation to Linux Users of Victoria Beginners Workshop August 18, 2012 http://levlafayette.com What Is The Command Line? 1.1 A text-based user interface that provides an environment to access the shell, which interfaces with the kernel, which is the lowest abstraction layer to system resources (e.g., processors, i/o). Examples would include CP/M, MS-DOS, various UNIX command line interfaces. 1.2 Linux is the kernel; GNU is a typical suite of commands, utilities, and applications. The Linux kernel may be accessed by many different shells e.g., the original UNIX shell (sh), the TENEX C shell (tcsh), Korn shell (ksh), and explored in this presentation, the Bourne-Again Shell (bash). 1.3 The command line interface can be contrasted with the graphic user interface (GUI). A GUI interface typically consists of window, icon, menu, pointing-device (WIMP) suite, which is popular among casual users. Examples include MS-Windows, or the X- Window system. 1.4 A critical difference worth noting is that in UNIX-derived systems (such as Linux and Mac OS), the GUI interface is an application launched from the command-line interface, whereas with operating systems like contemporary versions of MS-Windows, the GUI is core and the command prompt is a native MS-Windows application. Why Use The Command Line? 2.1 The command line uses significantly less resources to carry out the same task; it requires less processor power, less memory, less hard-disk etc. Thus, it is preferred on systems where performance is considered critical e.g., supercomputers and embedded systems. -
