CONTENTS HAPPY 8th Cover Page 1 Signature Races/Reunion 2 Firecracker Quad Photos 3 ANNIVERSARY Eight years ago, the main maniacs knew the Marathon Maniacs club was Did you Know? 4 special with so many members joining daily. Yet, something was missing. July Race Photos There were lots of people out there running half marathons. There were 5-6 also quite a few Maniacs looking to hang up the 26.2-mile distance and Achievements 7-8 sort of retire as half marathoners. They needed a place to call home too. July Race Photos 9-10 So, the idea of a second running club began to form. Half Marathon Maniacs? No, not right. Half Maniacs? Nope. Something similar but Regional Facebook Pages 11 different. Chris (HF #2) finally came up with a name that stuck. Upcoming Races 12 Our Marathon Maniac programmer, aka Brian Pendleton (HF #5), is an avid bird watcher. So, instead of a cat on the head, we updated the logo Gear/Fanatic Poll 13 to add a buzzard flying overhead. Also, to pay homage to the Gate Keeper Marc Frommer’s (HF # 4) curly locks sticking out of his running Flying Fanatic/Editor 14 hat, we gave the logo a “fro.” Then, after developing a website and database, the Half Fanatics club was born on July 4, 2009. Today, there New Members 15 are over 16,000 members and growing by leaps and bounds. Our Why 16-17 The main maniacs are thrilled that the Half Fanatics club has changed so many lives and facilitated thousands of friendships across the country and across the globe! Here’s to many more years of running half marathons and making more friends along the way.

  • Why the Athens Marathon Is on So Many Runners' Bucket Lists
Paul Samaras Apostolos Greek Tours, Inc. (303) 755-2888 [email protected] athensmarathon.com Why the Athens Marathon is on So Many Runners’ Bucket Lists Athens, Greece: While the Battle of Marathon is world famous as the inspiration for the Marathon race, many historians and philosophers consider it as the most significant battles in human history. In order to understand its importance, we go back to 508 B.C. Athens when the idea of democracy (dēmokratía) was a revolutionary new concept. This idea gave the individual certain freedoms, a voice in how the power of rule would apply. At this point democracy had not been tested or fully established. Then, in 490 B.C at the Battle of Marathon near Athens, Greece, free men fought with the new concept of freedom against suppression and slavery as their battle cry. Paul Samaras, born in Greece and owner of Apostolos Greek Tours, Inc. is very familiar with this history. “The battle became significant because it allowed democracy to develop and establish itself” says Paul, “If the battle had been lost, this new idea of democracy would have vanished and would not have been documented in history.” After the victory of the Battle of Marathon, Athens reached prosperous new heights. The victory inspired Greek society and culture – biology, geometry, philosophy, physics, forms of epic and lyric poetry, theater, tragedy, and comedy emerged. Democracy blossomed and became the foundation of Western Civilization. Legend has it that the Greek messenger Pheidippides ran from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens in order to relay news of the victory.

  • The Event Image of the Athens Marathon from the Sport Tourist Marathon Runners’ Perspective: a Qualitative and Quantitative Approach
RESEARCH PAPERS 1 The event image of the Athens Marathon from the Sport Tourist Marathon Runners’ perspective: A qualitative and quantitative approach Contact details Name author(s): K. Kaplanidou, PhD (Assistant Professor) (1), D. Funk, PhD (Professor) (2), N. Buta (PhD student) (3) & G. Goutzioupas (4) Institution(s) or organisation(s): University of Florida (1, 3); Griffith University (2); Athens Classic Marathon (4) City and country: Gainesville, USA (1, 3); Queensland, Australia (2); Athens, Greece (4) marketing sport Email address for correspondence: [email protected] Aim of paper and research questions The purpose of the study was to understand and describe the event image components of active sport tourist participants (i.e., marathon runners). The research question of the study was: a) what are the dominant event image themes for active sport tourists such as marathon runners? Literature review Sport events can be classified based on their size (e.g., small, large), the type of sport tourist they attract (e.g., active, passive), the imagery they can generate for their audiences through the media (Chalip, Green & Hill, 2003) and through direct experiences (Kaplanidou & Vogt, 2007). The image a sport tourist holds of a sport event or destination may influence their likelihood of re-visiting the host destination (Bigne, Sanchez & Sanjez, 2001), which can provide economic benefits for the host community (Gratton, Shilbi & Coleman, 2005). Event imagery may vary depending on the nature or size of the sport event and the type of sport tourist (i.e., active or passive). Kaplanidou (2006) conceptualised the image of a sport event from the active sport tourist perspective (i.e.
