Throughout the month, WQED: The Neighborhood Channel is taking viewers on a “Road Trip” by following Rick on five of his favorite national excursions. WQED: The Neighborhood Channel (13.1 digital) is the Pittsburgh region’s only broadcast channel devoted to locally produced programming 24 hours a day. To Market, To Market To Buy A Fat Pig – Whether you’re in the market for a fat pig or a plum bun, Rick and the gang will help you find it at an American market house. In this documentary, they taste the pies of Cleveland, the coconuts of Hawaii, the crab cakes of Baltimore and plenty more. They even discover some fruits and vegetables in Decatur that they had never seen before. A Flea Market Documentary – Flea markets are the home of hidden treasures. Rick’s team celebrates open-air shopping in this PBS special that visits fairgrounds, parking lots, drive-ins and sidewalks from Pasadena, CA to Washington, D.C. This is a must-see for fans of “Antiques Roadshow” and for anyone who wants to know where “X” marks the spot. – MORE – P. 2 – ROAD TRIP A Program about Unusual Buildings and Other Roadside Stuff – If Fallingwater and the Cathedral of Learning are landmarks, what does that make a house shaped like a duck? Rick travels across the country to find its oddest architecture. Walk into a towering muskie to enter the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, WI; chat with Zippy the Pinhead at the Doggie Diner in San Francisco; and, if you get a headache from all that traveling, look for the two-story mortar and pestle of Bondurant’s Pharmacy in Lexington, KY. A Cemetery Special – Don’t cover your eyes just yet. The host is Rick Sebak, not Edgar Allan Poe. This special takes an un-spooky look at graveyards across America to reveal the beauty we might otherwise miss. Roosters wander the tombstones in Key West, FL, a violinist serenades gravestones at the historic Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Civil War re-enactors pay tribute to the dead in Waterloo and weathered statues find rest in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Boston, MA. Sandwiches That You Will Like – Sandwiches are like snowflakes in this documentary celebrating original and outstanding eateries across the United States. Rick and friends dine on Lobster Rolls in Maine, Po Boys in New Orleans, Banh Mi Vietnamese subs in California and, of course, the Elvis sandwich in New York City. You’ll never eat a grilled cheese again. So take the “Road Trip” with Rick this month! Between his adventures, Rick Sebak has won a host of awards, including a Telly Award, numerous Mid-Atlantic Emmys®, a Matrix Award and the Gregory M. Franzwa Award for his 2008 national production for PBS called “A Ride along the Lincoln Highway.” In 2009, Rick was named the Pennsylvania Communication Association’s Speaker of the Year. He is currently working on his new show, “Breakfast Special,” set to air July 2010.
