From the Desk of Fr. Connolly March 4, 2018 The Importance of Fasting By the solemn forty days of Lent, the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of in the desert. As our Lord fasted in the desert, so ought we. Our Lenten fast must consist of more than the mere abstinence of meat on Friday; we should deny ourselves many other normal bodily pleasures, which will help us advance in the spiritual life. The Lenten practice of fasting is so important to help us grow in holiness. So many of the were greatly devoted to the practice of fasting. By bodily fasting, we suppress vice. Earthly pleasure, sensual pleasure, are all in league with each other - one leads to another. The denial of a pleasure that is normally allowable, accustoms one to self- denial and gives the power to forego sinful pleasure. After casting out a demon from a boy, the Lord’s disciples questioned Him as to why they failed in their own previous attempt to cast out the same demon. The reply came: “This kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21) How strong a weapon in our battle against hell is fasting! Divine truth has affirmed it. An old Latin proverb says, Plenus venter non- student libenter (it is hard to study on a full stomach). The ancient Roman knew how im- moderate indulgence in food paralyzes the en- ergy of the mind. The opposite, then, must also be true: it is easy to study under normal physi- cal conditions. Let us now pass from the natu- ral to the supernatural and consider the rela- tionship between flesh and spirit. Abstinence from sensual pleasure gives the a boost. Bodily pleasures are like lead weights holding the soul to the earth; if these disappear, if these are removed, the soul rises, like a balloon, to ce- lestial heights. Fasting, then, elevates the mind “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit and bestows upon the soul the power to prac- for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry.” (Luke 4:1-2) tice virtue and become holy. Thus, fasting is a powerful aid in living and developing a Christian life. It supports us in the battle with our lower nature; it offers us ways of ascending to God; it empowers us to practice virtue, and promises us eternal reward. It should be clear, then, why this season of Lent, which is devoted to spiritual renewal, must be hallowed by fasting. Third Sunday of Lent First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 : John 2:13-25 This reading from Exodus presents the Commandments.
