The early part of this Pedigree is taken from one made by the late Dr. J. J. Howard, Maltravers Herald, in tlie possession of the Compiler. Owing to a. gap in the Ightham Eegisters I am unable to make the foregoing Pedigree as perfect as I should wish. Eor instance, the burial of William Selby, who was born 1632, does not appear, but it must have taken place early in the eighteenth century. There is a pedigree at Heralds' College in which William Selby is said to have had twelve children by his first wife Susanna Rainey, of whom only five daughters survived. The baptism of his son John, who succeeded him at the Mote, is wanting. The burial of Dorothy, Lady Selby, in 1641 is missing, but the date of her death is known from the fine tomb in the chancel of Ightham Church to her memory. There are also fine recumbent figures of the two Sir William Selbys, uncle and nephew, in Ightham Church, but there are no other tablets or memorials to the family. In the Mote pew there is a tablet to Sir John and Lady Howell, both died 1682, the parents of Lady Selby and Mrs. William Selby. Mrs. John Selby nee Gifford and her daughter Mary are buried in the chancel of Eynsford Church, with a slab to their memory. Sir Henry Selby and his second wife and son are buried at Pembury without any monuments. At Eidley there is a Chalice given in 1703 by Mrs. Jane Selby, wife of William Selby of the Mote and daughter of the Eev. Henry Stacy, Sector of Eidley. The last burial of the Selby family is that of Mrs. Luard Selby, eldest daughter of Mr. Prideaux John Selby of Twizell and the Mote. She came into possession of the Mote in 1867 on the death of her father. IGHTHAM EEGISTERS.     Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 24 1900 ( 139 ) NOTES ON BROMLEY AND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.* BY PHILIP NOltMAN. BROMLEY, no doubt, sprang up as a town originally from being the residence of the Bishops of Rochester, who were connected with the place for so many centuries. The earlier history of its church and manor has been very well written by Dr. Beeby in Volume XIII. of Archceologia Gantiana (not to mention previous authors), and by Mr. Clinch in his Anti- quarian Jottings, published in 1889. I will not needlessly o-o over the old ground, but will confine myself, as much as possible, to a record of curious facts about this town and neighbourhood likely otherwise to be f orgotten, and of changes in its physical and social conditions from the time that my family first came to reside here until my own boyhood. Much of the information contained in this Paper is derived from a manuscript written by my father, who was one of the original members of the Kent Archseological Society, a contributor to its publications, and keenly attached to his native district. My great-grandfather James Norman settled at Bromley Common about the year 1755, in a house built at the beginning of last century, and known as the Rookery, which is still standing, though much transformed and added to. It had been previously occupied by the Chase family and others; the Chase arms remain, painted on the ceiling of the staircase. Bromley was then a small country town, with two annual fairs and weekly markets, first granted as long ago as the reign of Henry VI.

Over 140 new members have been elected during the past year, and the total membership now stands at just over 1,100. The Council are much indebted to those members whose efforts have been so successful in interesting their friends in the work of the Society. It is sincerely hoped they will not relax their efforts in the coming year, particularly in view of the unavoidable increase in subscriptions payable by new members. It is with deepest regret that the Council record the loss of the Rev. Canon R. IL Potts, F.S.A., Sir Charles Igglesden, F.S.A., and Mr. J. H. Bolton. For over thirty years Canon Potts was a valued member of the Council and a scholarly contributor to Archcsologia Cantiana. Mr. Bolton as Secretary for the Rochester district and also latterly a member of the Council was also keenly interested in arclueological work. Sir Charles Igglesden, who was a member of the Society for fifty years, will long be remembered not only as one of our leading antiquarians and local historians, but also for the thirty-five illustrated volumes which he pub- lished himself of his Saunters through Kent. At the General Meeting in April the President, Major Teichman Derville, made his customary survey of recent events, dealing briefly with the membership figures, the finances of the Society, the earlier appearance of the current volume of Archccologia Cantiana, the Excursion Meetings, and last, but far from least, the very successful lunch held on 20th April to commemorate the landing of the English-speaking peoples in Kent in A.D.

    pg 1/2 John Leonard No Picture Available Born: 1508 England Married: Elizabeth Harmon Died: 3 Dec 1590 England Parents: John Leonard & Catherine Weston John Lennard was High Sheriff of Kent; a Barrister of Lincoln's Inn, Holborn, London; and a gentleman of some wealth. His daughter Rachel became Lady Bergavenny when she married into the powerful Neville family, noble descendants of King Edward III of the House of Plantagenet. John Lennard lived and worked during the turbulent times of the Tudors: King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary"), and Queen Elizabeth I. The shire of Kent is very close to London and John, from his position, was a participant in the momentous events of 16th Century England. Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon in Greenwich Palace, Kent, in 1509. Queen Elizabeth I was born there in 1533 and Edward VI died there in 1553 at age 15. Canterbury, the seat of the Archbishop, is also in Kent. Traditionally, the High Sheriff, who had precedence over the local Lord-Lieutenant, was notified and invited to attend ceremonies whenever the sovereign or a member of the royal family was in his shire. In old England, the High Sheriff of a shire or county was more than a civil servant. It was an honor usually bestowed on a distinguished member of the local gentry or minor nobility, whether he wanted it or not. The position of sheriff (shire-reeve or king's representative) is over a thousand years old. Appointed by the Crown or by local nobles, the sheriff was responsible for keeping law and order in the shire and enforcing the collection of taxes and fines.

At the outset it should be remarked that the term residence is adopted advisedly, because " Palace. " in strictness applies only to a Bishop's house, situated in his cathedral city. Nothing can be said with certainty as to the spot on which the Saxon Bishops of Rochester lived. Bede speaks of Putta in 673 as " Bishop of the castle of the men of Kent called Rochester," implying, it would seem, that the city was a strong place, and was also the abode of the Bishop. Ecgberht, King of Kent, in 765 granted to Eardulf of Rochester, " his faithful minister and bishop, land within the walls of the castle," so that the Bishops possessed property on which they could reside. The suggestion has been made by Mr. Clark (Mediceval Military Architecture, ii. 420) that the mount known as Boley Hill was thrown up in order to afford them such personal security as was found necessary at Sherborne.
