As we approach the 50th anniversary of becoming The Center for health, healing, and hope for and South , we’re taking the time to refl ect on all the events that have led us to where we are today—and where they will lead us in the future.

2016 was a monumental year for The Center. We have expanded in a variety of areas, including:

n Individuals served: 22,000

n Counseling clients off ered fee subsidies: 99%

n Satellite offi ces: we now have seven locations in and around San Antonio, including further expansion into the Corpus Christi area.

Refl ections must be comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of the past. That’s why we’ve included these charts on our opening page – to show you how we have managed the fees that we earned and the donations you have so generously given over the last year.

But this is just the beginning of our journey. Continue reading to learn more about the events, the moments and, most important of all, the people who made 2016 The Center’s best year yet.

2 As many of you know, I’ve been working with But as time went on and as our leadership became The Ecumenical Center for almost 50 years now. Since stronger, The Center grew and grew. We expanded this year marks the 50th anniversary of The Center’s our offi ces. We expanded our services. The number of founding, I’ve been refl ecting on how things were back individuals we served on a yearly basis grew exponentially. then, how they’ve changed so much in our long history, and how they’ll change in the future. That leads me to today. In the last year alone, we served more than 22,000 individuals, over half of whom were Back when I began working at The Center in 1973, we had children. We opened fi ve new satellite locations, furthering much the same goals that we have now: to raise funds to our ability to provide The Center’s wonderful services provide health and healing services to those who need it to those in need. This now brings us to an overall seven most. We had around three counselors on staff , our board (that’s right, seven!) locations. And our organization is more only met once a month, and our only location was our fi nancially sound than ever. current headquarters in the Medical Center. I sincerely believe that none of what we’ve achieved in the last 50 years would have been possible without you. Whether you’re one of our wonderful volunteers, a member of our hardworking staff , a generous donor, a board member, or a member of our fantastic leadership, The Center would not be where it is today without you. And a special thanks to Mrs. Mary Beth Fisk, CEO and Executive Director of The Center. She provides a valuable service to our organization, and I want to thank her for all her hard work over the last year.

So what does the future hold in store for The Center? If we continue to stay strong, if our board, leadership, and volunteers continue on the same path they are on today, then the future of The Center is nothing but bright. We will continue to expand into new areas and support those who need it most. We will continue to help veterans, children, and adults all around South Texas. We will continue fulfi lling our mission and achieving our goals. All because of you. I am so proud to be a part of this organization full of kind, caring individuals.

Thank you so much for your continued support over the last 50 years. Let’s work together to make the next 50 even better.

Sincerely,

The Reverend Dr. Louis H. Zbinden Jr. Chairman of the Board ECRH 2016 ANNUALREPORT

3 Dear Friends,

As we approach The Center’s 50th anniversary, I’ve There is one individual, however, without Whose help spent a lot of time looking back at all the good that it none of what we’ve achieved in our 50-year history has done in its 50-year history. Since 1967, The Center would have been possible. God has opened so many has provided health and healing services to hundreds doors for us, and we hope that over the next 50 years, of thousands of individuals around South Texas, and He continues to work through us as we help further His in 2016, I’m glad to report that we’ve continued that plan. tradition – and then some. With that, I will leave you to see just how much we Our main goals for 2016 were to expand our services, have accomplished over the last year with your help. to increase the number of lives we could infl uence, and Thank you again for all the support you provide the to broaden our reach throughout the area. To achieve community through The Ecumenical Center. these goals, we succeeded in partnering with seven local churches and organizations to open new offi ces Sincerely, in San Antonio, Boerne, Schertz, Corpus Christi, and the Rio Grande Valley. Mary Beth Fisk Why these specifi c locations? Because they allow us CEO/Executive Director to reach the individuals who need our services most: veterans, families, children, and anyone else who needs our help.

Opening these offi ces and continuing our expansion would’ve been a diffi cult task if it weren’t for the help of people like you. Local individuals, business leaders, groups, and professionals here at The Center have sacrifi ced their time to help us reach our goals, and for that we are eternally grateful. 4 Refl ections on Hope, Healing and Health. In 1967, psychology, research sciences, business, society, and faith all found their common center.

It happened thanks to the uncommon genius and determination of four remarkable individuals: Episcopal Bishop Everett Holland Jones, Rabbi David Jacobson, Methodist Bishop Eugene Slater, and Catholic Archbishop Robert Lucey. But they did not refl ect on the things that divided them in the past. Instead, they saw an opportunity to create a center for hope, healing, and health.

First, in true “ecumenical” fashion, they brought together others from San Antonio’s various religious and spiritual traditions. Then they interfaced with the medical and scientifi c communities. They worked with universities and corporations. And they created what became formally known as The Ecumenical Center.

Since opening our doors in the South Texas Medical Center 49 years ago, we’ve done what a center does best: bring people together, channel ideas and services, provide balanced views, and reach out to those who need our specialized help.

Specifi cally, The Center off ers people support for physical, emotional, ethical, and spiritual well-being. We connect and educate clergy and other spiritual leaders. We bring medical, business, science, and other professionals together to promote strong ethics within their respective fi elds. We encourage mental health professionals to build on their knowledge for helping others. And The Center actively monitors our communities and our world for new opportunities to help.

Almost 50 years later, we still follow this same philosophy. We not only refl ect on our past, remember our roots, and continue to create a legacy of holistic, innovative, and inclusive healing; we also look forward to the future, anticipating the needs of our community, and ensuring that we continue to be a center for hope, healing, and health in San Antonio and South Texas. Whitney Davis “I play and talk to Mrs. Maureen about my feelings. It’s easy to talk to her and she helps me because when she talks to me about it, I can be myself. She talks to me about my school and my work and "I can be my sisters and my family and friends. She makes me feel better when I leave here because if I’m scared to do something, she can myself." tell me what to do sometimes and I’m not scared to do it. I like that the people are nice and that everybody likes me and they like each other.

“I came here because Mrs. Maureen helps me with stuff that I’m scared to do. Like when my parents got divorced I was really sad and I wanted to talk to somebody about it and I was scared to ask my grandma and my grandpa and my mom and my dad, so I came here and I talked to Mrs. Maureen about it and I feel better now.

“Kids shouldn’t be shy to come here because it’s a great place and the people here, like Mrs. Maureen, they listen to you.

“Since I saw Mrs. Maureen, I’m a lot more outgoing. Last year I even ran for student council at my school. I won! I feel a lot better about myself and can do a lot more things. I can talk to more people.”

First Sergeant Andrew Baker “I’m a 21-year retired US Army First Sergeant. I was a paratrooper, among other things. I’ve been on the front lines. When I came to The Center, I was looking for someone who you can relate to, someone who won’t sugar coat it and who'll tell it like it is, but not judge me and care about my specifi c situation. Then I found Dr. Emmett.

“I’ve seen my fair share of combat. And if you’ve already talked to a counselor who hasn’t seen combat, then you’ve probably already found out that it can be very frustrating. They just don’t understand. They just haven’t ‘been there and done that.’

“But Dr. Emmett is a retired military veteran. He was a psychologist for Special Operations out of MacDill Air Force Base. This gives him a unique perspective into our world.

“No one can “No one can understand a veteran like a fellow veteran. Even though he hasn’t been to combat, he has dealt with many people like us through counseling understand a veteran our Special Operations community. This has allowed him to gain a level of like a fellow veteran.” experience that is extremely hard to fi nd in a psychologist in the civilian sector.

“‘PTSD is a normal reaction to an abnormal experience.’ Once I accepted this statement, things became a lot easier for me. If you’re looking for things to get easier, if you’re looking for someone you can relate to, someone who’ll tell you like it is, but to not judge you and be caring at the same time, then I recommend Dr. Emmett and The Center.” ECRH 2016 ANNUALREPORT
