Dear Friends,

The gospel passage for this Fifth Sunday of Easter gives us another “I AM” image; this time it is of a vine and its branches. Jesus identifies himself as the true vine and the Father as the vine grower. Obviously, we are the branches and are reminded that “just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own Rev. Pat Render, CSV unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me”. Remaining connected Pastor is the key. In the second reading from his first letter, John identifies the connection by assuring us that “those who keep his (Christ’s) commandments remain in him and he in them”. John explains further that “his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of God’s son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us”. The criteria for remaining connected seem to be PARISH MINISTRIES believing and loving. That sounds simple enough, but we all know that the devil is in the details. MINISTERIOS DE LA PARROQUIA Neither believing nor loving are fixed states of being. They are fluid and they can change like the

Tragedy, suffering, disappointment, unanswered pray- Rev. Patrick W. Render, CSV Ext. 13 ers, failed hopes, disillusionment, and betrayal can all severely threaten love and belief, sometimes Associate Pastor/Pastor Asociado wiping them out altogether. So can neglect and apathy. Being connected in family, in friendships, in Rev. Moses Mesh, CSV Ext. 15 any kinds of bonds with others takes attention and effort. So does faith and believing. While we all Deacon Couples/Parejas Diaconales know that faith is a gift from God, keeping faith alive and healthy takes work on our part as well as Rev. Mr. Mario and Yanira Hernandez God’s. Letting faith stagnate or presuming that the depth of faith from childhood or adolescence is Rev. Mr. Victor and Maria Flores adequate for life, is surely dangerous – and erroneous. Faith is more than content and knowledge; Rev. Mr. Felix & Carmen Crespo it is relational. Believing in someone, even God, demands trust and intentionality. These are living Rev.
