Thank you for your interest in becoming an HSA Course Director, the highest and most trusted position in our organization. These materials explain the nature of the HSA CDTC and what your responsibilities include, such as costs and facilities. The last 3 pages are samples of ITC/DBC promotional materials available to you.

I. THE TRAINING IS IN TWO PHASES: 1. One on one in depth Power Point CDTC lectures covering ITC/DBC Lectures. 2. You will organize and teach an HSA ITC/DBC under CDT supervision. II. IN DEPTH LECTURES, 3 DAYS: 1. The CD Trainer will go through the entire HSA ITC/DBC Power Point Presentation & Instructor Manual (Academics, Standards & Procedures) covering every detail, including content and purpose. You will learn: 2. The unique founding of HSA and its special standing within the Dive Industry, the Medical Community and those with disabilities. 3. How to use the HSA Power Point lectures to develop your own credibility, the credibility of HSA, and empathy for people who have the various disabilities covered. 4. How the HSA Certification system works, develop an understanding of the HSA Performance Requirements and how to teach this system to Instructors candidates. 5. Develop an understanding of accessibility issues, overcome barriers, use and how to teach this to Instructors & Dive Buddy candidates. 6. How to conduct HSA ITC/DBC confined and open water skill evaluations, why these skills were chosen and how to use them to develop HSA Instructor Teaching Skills & Dive Buddy Assisting Skills. 7. You will deliver ITC/DBC a select few lectures to CD Trainer in a one to one setting. III. ORGANIZE AND TEACH ITC/DBC UNDER SUPERVISION, 3 DAYS: 1. You will plan the ITC/DBC, including lecture room, confined and open water facilities, and recruitment of the Instructor candidates. 2. You will teach the ITC/DBC under the CD Trainers supervision. Each day will be followed-up with discussions on what happened that day, and planning for the next day. a. Lectures 10 hours, lecture room with PowerPoint presentation capability. b. Confined Water, 5 hours in the water, equipment blacked out masks & ties for binding legs. You will be teaching new skills for diving & solving problems as a para, quad, right arm amputee & blind diver. c. Open Water 4 hours, you will be teaching new logistical skills. 3. You will administer and correct the HSA ITC/DBC Exam. 4. NOTE: The Instructor Training Course (ITC) & Dive Buddy Course (DBC) are designed to be taught together or separately.

PREREQUISITES:

1. HSA Instructor in good standing. 2. Instructor for a minimum of two (2) years. 3. Certified a minimum of twenty (20) Open Water Divers, with or without disabilities. 4. Teach one (1) HSA Open Water Scuba Courses. 5. Certify one (1) HSA Open Water Scuba diver with disabilities.

RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE: 1. Certify one (1) HSA Advanced Scuba diver with a disability. 2. Teach one (1) Dive Buddy Course. 3. Coordinate and supervise overnight Scuba tours for divers with disabilities. 4. Conduct a Resort Evaluation.

HSA COURSE DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Offer and promote two (2) HSA ITC/DBCs per year. 2. Teach one (1) HSA ITC/DBC or DBC per year. 3. Train & HSA certify two (2) Open Water divers with disabilities per year. 4. Field questions from HSA Instructors and divers in your area. 5. Respond to the media in your area. 6. Respond to general inquires in your area.

The CD Training Course (CDTC) will be taught in two phases. The first phase will cover Lectures and Water work; this will take three (3) days. The second phase the CD candidate will teach an HSA ITC/DBC under supervision.

The Handicapped Scuba Association Instructor Training Course (ITC) has Trained & Certified over 4,000 leading Underwater Educators throughout the world since 1986, including over 50 Medical Doctors, and numerous other health professionals. During FIVE HOURS of Confined water training you will be “handicapped” with your legs tied together, and with blacked out masks, then put into typically problematic training scenarios to “experience” what your students will experience. As a Scuba Instructor you teach your students to do what you do. If you haven’t experienced what they will experience, you do not have the tools to teach them. This will give you the tools.

Student logistics can change significantly when disabilities are introduced into your tried and true training procedures. The half-day OPEN WATER TRAINING will prepare you to be “flexible” when conducting open water training, and . Who is eligible for the ITC?
