This should include information on current physical appearance, size, use and ownership) Glasgow East Arts Company (GEAC) is currently working to enhance the perimeter area of The Bridge based on feedback from the company’s 5 Year Review. The purpose of enhancing the surrounds of the The Bridge is to: - create a more visible entrance - make the entrance and wider perimeter area feel safer for the public to access - to enhance the look of the area, encouraging more visitors - to ensure the outdoor area of The Bridge looks as ‘aspirational’ as the inside presenting a dynamic impression - to contribute to the development of environmental development of the local area In particular this project will enhance the most heavily used walkway to The Bridge – that from the bus stop at Westerhouse Road to the entrance next to The Bridge Café. Through a commissioned large scale new mosaic, GEAC aims to reconstruct and make good the current wall with complementary soft landscaping and lighting. The new mosaic will build on the iconic history of the old Easterhouse Mosaic located up in Lochend. The new commission has been awarded some investment from the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art which takes place in April 2012. The festival will introduce people from all over the city, Scotland and further afield to The Bridge. This makes a vital contribution to the economic development of the local area and to GEAC. The mosaic will be produced by Alex Frost, a major Glasgow artist, and it will comprise profiles of local people. Currently the wall on this walkway is in poor condition and needs to strengthened in some areas and rebuilt in others. This is so it becomes strong enough to take the additional weight of the mosaic and additional enhanced lighting. The wall stretches to about 40 meters with a further 10 metres or so of weeds. The weeds will be refreshed with attractive soft planting. Strathclyde police own the wall as it is part of their local boundary. We are in positive discussion with them and to date they are delighted to see the wall take on a new life. 2.2 Please indicate which of the Baillieston, Shettleston & Greater Easterhouse sector priorities this initiative will contribute to?
