Wide Open Classic Highlights Record 10th ‘Cup at Santa Anita

With 86 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races in the rearview mirror and all the major preps around the country complete as well, all eyes turn to as the Breeders’ Cup returns to the Arcadia, track for a record 10th time. The 36th Breeders’ Cup will unite countless equine stars from across the world as several divisional championships will be decided over two days and 14 races, totaling more than $30 million in purses, none more important than the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will bring the curtain down Saturday evening. A wide-open renewal is in the offing as handicap star MCKINZIE and 3- year-old stalwart CODE OF HONOR lead the way over an expected full field of 14, with a potential Horse of the Year title lying in the balance.

McKinzie winning the Whitney at Saratoga Photo by Eclipse Sportswire

The field for the 1 ¼-mile Classic may be lacking a true superstar but there is plenty of depth in a race that looks like it could go any number of different ways. Favoritism could fall on Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman’s MCKINZIE, who has been the top rated horse in the Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings since June 11 for Hall of Fame trainer , who is seeking his fourth Classic win. The 4-year-old son of 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner earned a berth into the Classic when he won Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Whitney (G1) in August and prepped with a surprising second- place finish at 1-5 in another Classic qualifier, the local “Win and You’re In” Awesome Again (G1) Sept. 28. McKinzie, who is 7-for-13 lifetime, also won the Alysheba at Churchill Downs (G2) in May and will try to make amends for a disappointing 12th-place finish in last year’s Classic at Churchill. He’ll also have a new rider for the first time, as Joel Rosario replaces Mike Smith, who rode McKinzie in all 13 prior starts.

Will Farish’s homebred CODE OF HONOR could sew up divisional honors with a big run, as he’s had a productive year-long campaign for trainer Shug McGaughey and has really turned the corner this summer. The 3-year-old son of (GB) won Gulfstream Park’s Fountain of Youth (G2) in August and was second (via disqualification) in the and has clearly taken his game to a new level since then, as he easily won Belmont Park’s Dwyer (G3) in July and Saratoga’s Travers (G1) in August before qualifying for the Classic when he was second but placed first in Belmont’s “Win and You’re In” Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) Sept. 28. Code of Honor is 5-for-9 lifetime and began his serious preparations for the Classic with a four-furlong work in 50.65 seconds Oct. 12 over Belmont’s main track, his first of two works before shipping to Santa Anita.

"Saturday was just something to get him going again and I'll come back and do more with him next weekend and blow him out and then send him to California and run him," McGaughey said.

The Classic will get some added appeal as Adele Dilschneider and Claiborne Farm’s ELATE, a 5-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, is slated to tackle males and look to join the great as the only female to win the Classic. Trainer Bill Mott has had his eye on the race all year, since Elate excels over the distance, as she’s 3-for-3 going 1 ¼ miles. Elate, who is 7-for-18 lifetime, qualified for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff with her win in the “Win and You’re In” Fleur De Lis (G2) at Churchill in June, and enters off consecutive second-place finishes in another pair of grade 1 “Win and You’re In” Distaff qualifiers; Saratoga’s Personal Ensign in August and ’s Spinster Oct. 6.

The rest of the Classic division is led by a pair of “Win and You’re In” Classic qualifiers in Hronis Racing’s HIGHER POWER and Mongolian Stable’s MONGOLIAN GROOM. The former, a 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro won Del Mar’s Pacific Classic (G1) by 5 ¼ lengths at 1 ¼ miles to earn his bid for trainer John Sadler, could be flying under the radar, as he lost all chance at the start of the Awesome Again and was a distant third. The latter, a 4-year-old son of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Hightail shocked the Awesome Again at 25-1 for trainer Enebish Ganbat. Chuck Fipke’s homebred SEEKING THE SOUL earned a berth into the race when he won Churchill’s “Win and You’re In” Stephen Foster (G2) in June for trainer Dallas Stewart, while Mike Repole and St. Elias Stable’s VINO ROSSO was disqualified in the Gold Cup for trainer but won the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) in May at 1 ¼ miles.

Former grade 1 winner YOSHIDA (JPN), (G1) winner MATH WIZARD, and Preakness winner WAR OF WILL are also expected for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, as is graded stakes winner OWENDALE, while CATHOLIC BOY, and GRAY MAGICIAN are possible.

Midnight Bisou Makes Horse of the Year Claim in Distaff Photo by Eclipse Sportswire

The $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, run at 1 1/8 miles, has its own Horse of the Year candidate in Bloom Racing, Madaket Stable, and Allen Racing’s , who is perfect in seven starts this year for trainer Steve Asmussen. The 4-year-old daughter of two-time Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Midnight Lute owns a pair of “Win and You’re In” Distaff qualifiers: Belmont Park’s Ogden Phipps (G1) in June and Saratoga’s Personal Ensign (G1) in August, and has beaten Classic-bound Elate three times, including Oaklawn Park’s Apple Blossom (G1) in April. Midnight Bisou, who is 12-for-18 lifetime and was third in last year’s Distaff at Churchill Downs, prepped with a win in Belmont’s Beldame (G2), and a Distaff win, coupled with an upset in the Classic, would make a viable case for Horse of the Year. Midnight Bisou worked over the Santa Anita main track Oct. 14, going five furlongs in 1:01.60, with regular rider Mike Smith aboard, and Asmussen like what he saw.

“Perfect. I thought she looked very comfortable,” Asmussen said. “I was extremely curious for Mike’s input on how she went over the race track because of his familiarity with her and the race track separately, and all reports were very positive.”

While Midnight Bisou casts an imposing shadow, several other Distaff candidates would argue for favoritism without her presence, as a quartet of “Win and You’re In” qualifiers will be waiting in the wings, should the superstar filly fail to deliver. Merriebelle Stable’s BLUE PRIZE (ARG) repeated in Keeneland’s Oct. 6 Juddmonte Sprinter (G1) for trainer Nacho Correas and the 6-year-old daughter of Pure Prize (ARG) is 9-for-22 lifetime. She was a close fourth in last year’s Distaff. Paul and Karen Eggert’s homebred OLLIE’S CANDY won Del Mar’s Clement L. Hirsch (G1) in July for trainer John Sadler and the 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) is 4-for-9 lifetime; Steve Sarkowsky and Pam and Marty Wygod’s PARADISE WOODS earned a berth when she won Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (G2) Sept. 28 for trainer John Shirreffs and was third in the Distaff in 2017 at Del Mar when trained by Richard Mandella; and Ray Francis, Cindy Jones, and trainer Larry Jones’ homebred STREET BAND won Parx Racing’s Cotillion (G1) Sept. 21, though the 3-year-old daughter of Istan will face a tall task while tackling older for the first time.

Grade 1-winning 3-year-olds DUNBAR ROAD and SERENGETTI EMPRESS are also expected for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, as is LA FORCE (GER) and SECRET SPICE, while SHE’S A JULIE could also start.

Bricks and Mortar Has Horse of the Year Case with Turf Win Photo by Eclipse Sportswire

An undefeated campaign that would include five grade 1 wins and culminates with a win in the $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf would make Klaravich Stable and Bill Lawrence’s BRICKS AND MORTAR a very worthy of Horse of the Year candidate, so clearly the 1 ½-mile race will be one of the Saturday highlights. While trainer Chad Brown has yet to commit to the race—he’s also contemplating the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile—Bricks and Mortar would be a stiff favorite should he try 1 ½ miles for the first time, as he’s undefeated in five starts this year, which includes grade 1 wins in the Gulfstream Park Pegasus World Cup Turf in January, Turf Classic at Churchill Downs in May, and “Win and You’re In” Arlington Million (G1) Aug. 10, which earned the 5-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway an automatic starting berth into the Turf. Bricks and Mortar, who is 10-for-12 lifetime, and also won the Mervin Muniz (G2) at Fair Grounds in March. Brown indicated he’s “50-50” on the Turf or Mile, and said he’ll likely pre-enter Bricks and Mortar in both races. However, after continuing to be overly impressed in his training, the Turf could be coming to the forefront.

“Put it this way, the mile and a half race is very much under consideration at this point the way he’s training,” Brown said. “He’s settling in his works and finishing and coming back with a tremendous amount of energy after his works. He’s as fit as he’s ever been.”

Europeans have long held a heavy hand in the Turf and this year is no different, though the status of Gestut Ammerland and Newsells Park’s WALDGEIST (FR), who upset the supermare (GB) Oct. 6 at Longchamp to earn a Turf bid in the historic “Win and You’re In” Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), is still in question. The 5-year-old son of (IRE) relished the heavy going and overtook the Enable late in a major upset, though Waldgeist won Prix Ganay (G1) at Longchamp in May to tip his hand for trainer Andre Fabre. Enable was denied a record third straight Arc but lost nothing in defeat and it was announced Wednesday that the 5-year-old daughter of (IRE), who is a 10-time group/grade 1 winner for trainer John Gosden and last year became the first horse ever to win the Arc and the Turf, will be given the rest of the year off but return in 2020 and set her sights on the Arc once again.

Regardless of Waldgeist and Enable’s participation, a strong group of invaders are expected, led by the Coolmore conglomerate of , Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith’s ANYTHONY VAN DYCK (IRE), who was a strong third to stablemate Magical (IRE) in Leopardstown’s Sept. 14 Turf qualifier, the “Win and You’re In” Irish Champion (G1) for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has won the Turf six times. The 3-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) won the (G1) in June and is 5-for-12 lifetime.

Abdulla Al Mansoori’s DESERT ENCOUNTER (IRE), who repeated in Saturday’s Pattison Canadian International (G1, see race recap below) for trainer David Simcock and Godolphin’s homebred OLD PERSIAN (GB), who won Woodbine’s (G1) Sept. 14 for trainer Charlie Appleby are also possible, as is German group 3 winner ALOUNAK (FR). Saturday’s $1.64 million QIPCO British Champions Stakes (G1) at Ascot could also impact any European participation.

The rest of the American-based runners are led by the Ellwood Johnson Trust’s ACCLIMATE, who earned a berth into the Turf when he won the “Win and You’re In” Del Mar Handicap (G2) in August for trainer Phil D’Amato, and Donegal Racing’s ARKLOW, who won Belmont Park’s Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) Oct. 5 for trainer Brad Cox, while graded stakes winners BANDUA, CHANNEL CAT, CHANNEL MAKER, and CLEOPATRA’S STRIKE could also run in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. (See Major Stakes Recap for Contenders’ List)

Contention Runs Deep in Mile

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile is shaping up as one of the deepest and most competitive renewals in recent memory, as, depending on the participation of Bricks and Mortar (see Turf preview above), the race would lack a prior standout like Goldikova (IRE) or Wise Dan, but instead figures to have a full field of 14 who are all long on credentials and all have winning chances.

Favoritism could go any number of different ways but Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta, and Bethlehem Stable’s UNI (GB) may be the one to beat the trainer Chad Brown. The 5-year- old daughter of More Than Ready earned an automatic starting berth into the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf when she won Keeneland’s Oct. 5 “Win and You’re In” First Lady (G1) but her 6-for- 7 record at a mile has her connections expected to supplement her to the Mile. Uni is 9-for-17 lifetime, including Del Mar’s Matriarch (G1) last December.

A trio of American “Win and You’re In” Challenge race winners will have a major say, as Agave Racing Stable and ERJ Stable’s BOWIES HERO, a 5-year-old son of 2005 Mile winner Artie Schiller, won the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) Oct. 5 for trainer Phil D’Amato, while Sam-Son Farm’s EL TORMENTA, a 4-year- old son of Stormy Atlantic, won the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) Sept. 14 for trainer Gail Cox, and Gary Barber and Southern Equine Stable’s GOT STORMY, a 4-year-old daughter of Get Stormy, won Saratoga’s Fourstardave (G1) in August for trainer Mark Casse.

The Europeans could send two “Win and You’re In” Challenge winners in Geoff and Sandra Turnbull’s (FR), a 6-year-old son of Whipper who won Royal Ascot’s Queen Anne (G1) in June for trainer David O’Meara, while R Ng’s (IRE), a 4-year-old son of Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) won Deauville’s Jacques le Marois (G1) in August for trainer Ken Condon. Saturday’s $1.40 million QUIPCO Queen Elizabeth II (G1) at Ascot could also impact any prospective European participation.

The Americans could also see CATHOLIC BOY, CARRIBOU CLUB, CATAPULT, HIGHER POWER, LUCULLAN and RESTRAINEDVENGENCE enter for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile, while Europeans (IRE), IRIDESSA (IRE), LINE OF DUTY (IRE), (GB), SPACE TRAVELLER, SUEDOIS (FR), and TRUE VALOUR (IRE) are also eying the race.

Sistercharlie Looms Large to Repeat in Filly & Mare Turf

Peter Brant’s Champion Turf Female SISTERCHARLIE (IRE) will be heavily favored to repeat in the $2 million Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf, though the 1 ¼-mile race will not be without plenty of upset candidates. The 5-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie (IRE) streaked to her championship on the basis of a 4-for-5 season which culminated in the Filly & Mare Turf at Churchill Downs. Trainer Chad Brown, who has won the race four times, brought back Sistercharlie slowly this year and she’s 3-for-3, with grade 1 wins in the Diana at Saratoga in July and Beverly D. at Arlington Park in August and Flower Bowl at Belmont Park Oct. 6. The latter two were both “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifiers for the Filly & Mare Turf. Sistercharlie is 10-for-14 lifetime and would be a lock for another championship if she doubles up at Santa Anita.

The Europeans look to be sending several heavyweights, with a pair of “Win and You’re In” Challenge winners leading the way; Mrs. C. C. Regalado Gonzalez’s IRIDESSA (IRE), a 3-year-old daughter of (IRE) who won a sharp renewal of Leopardstown’s Coolmore Fastnet Rock (G1) in September for trainer Joseph O’Brien, while Darpat France’s VILLA MARINA (GB), a 3-year-old daughter of Le Havre (IRE) who won the Prix de l’Opera Longines (G1) at Longchamp Oct. 6 for trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias. Group stakes winner (GB), CASTLE LADY (IRE), DEIRDRE (JPN), DURANCE (GER), FANNY LOGAN (IRE), and SILVA (IRE) could also make the trip. Saturday’s QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (G1) at Ascot could also impact any prospective European participation.

The rest of the American team includes MIRTH, who earned a berth when she won the “Win and You’re In” Rodeo Drive (G1) over the course and distance Sept. 28 for trainer Phil D’Amato, as well as graded stakes winner BEAU RECALL (IRE) and MRS. SIPPY, while THAIS could also run in the Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf.

Denis’ Moment, Eight Rings Clash in Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies Brims with Talent

An exciting matchup in the TVG Breeders’ Cup between Albaugh Family Stable’s DENNIS’ MOMENT and SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stable’s EIGHT RINGS, who both won “Win and You’re In” qualifiers, offer a glimpse of the future, while a large field of 2-year-old fillies is expected for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

The $2 million Juvenile, at 1 1/16 miles, will have championship ramifications as Dennis’ Moment, who has wowed onlookers in his last two wins, travels to Eight Rings’ home track in an effort to decide the country’s best 2-year-old. Dennis’ Moment, a son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, threw his jockey soon after his debut at Churchill Downs in June then broke his maiden with a 19 ¼-length win at Ellis Park in July before winning Churchill Downs’ “Win and You’re In” Iroquois (G3) to secure a berth into the Juvenile for trainer Dale Romans. Eight Rings had similar misfortune for trainer Bob Baffert, as he easily won on debut at Del Mar in August then threw his jockey soon after the start of the Del Mar Futurity (G1) in September. The son of Empire Maker rebounded and earned a Juvenile berth when he won the local track and distance “Win and You’re In” American Pharoah (G1) Sept. 27.

Godolphin’s homebred MAXFIELD, who upset the “Win and You’re In” Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland Oct. 5 to gain an entry, is also expected, and the son of 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Street Sense is 2-for-2 for trainer Brendan Walsh, and would also be in line for a championship with a win. AMERICAN THEOREM, FLAP JACK, KING SNAKE, NUCKY, OUR COUNTRY, SCABBARD, and WRECKING CREW could also run in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

The $2 million Juvenile Fillies, also at 1 1/16 miles, looks to be much more up for grabs, as there is seemingly any number of winning candidates. Baffert could have the favorite in Baoma Corporation’s BAST, since she’s a grade 1 track and distance winner in the “Win and You’re In” Chandelier (G1), which gained her an automatic starting berth into the race. The daughter of 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo is 2-for-3 lifetime and broke her maiden by 8 ¾ lengths in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in August.

A trio of “Win and You’re In” Challenge victors will make Bast earn it, led by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stable, the Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stable’s BRITISH IDIOM, a daughter of Flashback who is 2- for-2 for trainer Brad Cox, including Keeneland’s Oct.4 Alcibiades (G1), while ERJ Racing and Great Friends Stable’s LAZY DAISY, a daughter of Paynter, won Churchill’s Pocahontas (G2) Sept. 14 for trainer Doug O’Neill, and Alex and JoAnn Leiblong’s WICKED WHISPER, a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map, wired Belmont Park’s Oct. 6 Frizette (G1) to go 2-for-2 for trainer Steve

Asmussen. COMICAL, PERFECT ALIBI, DONNA VELOCE, FRANK’S ROCKETTE, GREEN DESTINY, and POWERFULATTRACTION are also expected for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Mitole, Imperial Hint on Collision Course in Sprint

Divisional leaders MITOLE and IMPERIAL HINT are set to square off in what figures to be a mouth- watering matchup in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint, which will likely have the smallest field of any race over the two days.

Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt’s Mitole has been atop the sprint division all year for trainer Steve Asmussen, as the 4-year-old son of Eskendereya has won 5-for-6 starts, many in dominant fashion. Mitole won a pair of “Win and You’re In” races for the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in Belmont Park’s Met Mile (G1) in June and Saratoga’s Forego (G1) Aug. 24, but has always been kept to one-turn. Mitole, who also won the Churchill Downs (G1) in May, is 9-for-13 lifetime.

Ray Mamone’s Imperial Hint has won his last two for trainer Luis Carvajal and earned a berth into the Sprint when he won Belmont’s “Win and You’re In” Vosburgh Sept. 28. The 6-year-old son of Imperialism broke a Saratoga track record when he won the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) in July and is 14-for-23 lifetime. Imperial Sprint has been a Sprint fixture the past two years, as he was second in the race at Del Mar in 2017 and third as the favorite last year at Churchill.

Woodford Racing’s ENGAGE earned a Sprint berth when he won Keeneland’s “Win and You’re In” Keenon Stoll Ogden Phoenix (G2) Oct. 4 for Asmussen, and the 4-year-old son of Into Mischief is 2-for-2 since leaving trainer Chad Brown’s Barn, while the freakishly fast SHANCELOT, a 3-year-old son of 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby, set a Saratoga’s track record in winning their Amsterdam (G2) by 12 ½ lengths in July and was just second, beaten a head, to Omaha Beach in the

Sprint Championship for trainer Jorge Navarro. Graded stakes winner HOG CREEK HUSTLE and FIRENZE FIRE are also expected for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, as are LANDESKOG and MATERA SKY.

Plenty of Star Power in Remaining ‘Cup Races

Six other $1 million Breeders’ Cup races will be run Friday and Saturday and figure to draw deep and competitive fields filled with the best of their respective divisions.

The seven-furlong Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint could be one of the best races of the weekend, with “Win and You’re In” Challenge race winners COME DANCING, SPICED PERFECTION, and STORMY EMBRACE tackling 3-year-old sprint phenom COVFEFE, in a race that could also include BELLAFINA, DAWN THE DESTROYER, GUARANA, HEAVENHASMYNIKKI, LADY NINJA, MIA MISCHIEF, and ROYAL CHARLOTTE.

The Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, run this year at two turns, is expected to be led the 3-year-old OMAHA BEACH, whose owner Rick Porter late on Thursday indicated to Daily Racing Form that the son of War Front would be pointed to this race. Omaha Beach, trained by Richard Mandella, won in April and made a rousing return in capturing the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1) on Oct. 5 for trainer Richard Mandella.

Hronis Racing’s CATALINA CRUISER, who is 3-for-3 this year, including a win in Del Mar’s Aug. 24 Pat O’Brien (G2), a “Win and You’re In” for the Dirt Mile. Grade stakes winners AIR STRIKE, COAL FRONT, GIANT EXPECATIONS, IMPROBABLE, MR. FREEZE, MR. MONEY, SNAPER SINCLAIR, and TRUE TIMBER could also run, as could GRAY MAGICIAN, while AMBASSADORIAL and TRAIS FLOURS (GB) could come from Europe and BLUE CHIPPER from South Korea.

The five-furlong Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint figures to draw a crowd, with “Win and You’re In” winners FAIRYLAND (IRE), who won The Curragh’s Derrinstown Stud Flying Five (G1) in September for trainer Aidan O’Brien and TOTALLY BOSS, who won Kentucky Downs’ Runhappy Turf Sprint (G3) Sept. 7 for trainer Rusty Arnold, leading the way over a field that could also include BELVOIR BAY, CITY BOY, EDDIE HASKELL, FINAL FRONTIER, IMPRIMIS, JUSTAHOLIC, LEGENDS OF WAR, LEINSTER, OM, PEE WEE REESE, PURE SENSATION, SO PERFECT, STORMY LIBERAL, and STUBBINS.

A group of talented North American-based runners and an abundance of classy Europeans figure to oversubscribe both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will both be run at 1-mile. DECORATED INVADER looked good winning the “Win and You’re In” Summer Stakes (G1) Sept. 15 at Woodbine for trainer Christophe Clement and looms a major contender in the Juvenile Turf, along with fellow Challenge race winner PEACE ACHIEVED, who won the “Win and You’re In” Dixiana Bourbon (G3) Oct. 6 at Keeneland for trainer Mark Casse. ANDESITE, BILLY BATTS,

EMBOLDEN, GRACEFUL KITTEN, HIT THE ROAD, OUR COUNTRY, STRUCTOR, and VITALOGY (GB) could also start for the Americans. The European contingent is still in flux, though Coolmore’s ROYAL DORNOCH (IRE), who won the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte Royal Lodge (G2) at Newmarket Sept. 29, is expected for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The Juvenile Fillies Turf will see ABSCOND, who won the “Win and You’re In” (G1) Sept. 15 at Woodbine for trainer Eddie Kenneally and SWEET MELANIA, who took the “Win and You’re In” JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G2) at Keeneland Oct. 9 for trainer Todd Pletcher, leading the way over a group of Americans that could also include CRYSTALLE, FAIR MAIDEN, MIND OUT, ONYX, SELFLESSLY, SHARING, and WARREN’S SHOWTIME. The Europeans could counter with “Win and You’ In” winners (IRE), who won the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussacs (G1) at Longchamp Oct. 6 for trainer Jessica Harrington, and DAAHYEH (GB), who won the Shadwell Rockfell (G2) at Newmarket Sept. 27 for trainer Roger Varian, as well as LIVING IN THE PAST (IRE), ROSE OF KILDARE (IRE), and WALK IN MARRAKESH (IE).

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, run at five furlongs, sees EL TIGRE TERRIBLE, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, and KIMARI rate as “Win and You’re In” qualifiers for the home team, which could also start ANOTHER MIRACLE, BULLETPROOF ONE, CAMBIRA, CHIMNEY PARK, FOOLISH HUMOR, FREEWHEELER, and MR. TIP. The Europeans could send A’ALI (IRE), AL RAYA (GB), BAND PRACTICE (IRE), and STREAMLINE (GB).

MAJOR STAKES RECAP October 11-13

A review of the major global races in the corresponding Breeders’ Cup divisions from last week. Winning jockeys’ names are in parenthesis in each recap. The top Breeders’ Cup Points' leaders and Breeders’ Cup Challenge winners by division are listed at the end of each section. Breeders’ Cup Point earners are limited to horses who finish first, second or third in US and Canadian Graded Stakes races. Horses based outside of the U.S., who have not won a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, are selected into World Championships races by the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel at the Pre-Entry stage, Oct. 21. An asterisk in the points section denotes a foreign contender. A complete Breeders’ Cup Points list is available at:https://members.breederscup.com/championships/pointsleaderboard.aspx

Race: $800,000 Pattison Canadian International (G1), 3yos & up, 1 ½ miles (turf) Track: Woodbine Finishing Order: 1 – DESERT ENCOUNTER (IRE), 2 – ALOUNAK (FR), 3 – ZIYAD (GB) Margins: ½, neck, neck Also ran: PUMPKIN RUMBLE, NESSY Winning Owner: Abdullah Al Mansoori; Trainer: David Simcock; Jockey: Andrea Connections: Atzeni. Time: 2:28.62 (good)

Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – Abdullah Al Mansoori’s DESERT ENCOUNTER (IRE) (Andrea Atzeni) overcame a slow start after spotting the field several lengths but was up in time with a half-length win over ALOUNAK (FR) to repeat in Woodbine’s $800,000 Pattison Canadian International (G1). David Simcock trained the winner, a 7-year-old son of who has been right at home over Woodbine’s expansive turf course, as he invaded last year to storm home in much the same fashion. Desert Encounter entered off a trio of group 3 wins in Europe, including the Legacy Cup at Newbury Sept. 21, and is now 12-for-31 lifetime. He could be in line for a step up in class in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf in his next start, as could Darius Racing’s third-place finisher ALOUNAK (FR), a 4-year-old son of Camelot (GB) who won the Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe (G3) at Baden-Baden Aug. 24 for trainer Waldemar Hickst. Race: $200,000 Knickerbocker (G2), 3yos & up, 1 1/8 miles (turf) Track: Belmont Park Finishing Order: 1 – LUCULLAN, 2 – OLYMPICO (FR), 3 – DR. EDGAR Margins: 1, 2, head Also ran: CATHOLIC BOY, GLORIOUS EMPIRE (IRE), ARGONNE Winning Owner: Godolphin; Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin; Jockey: Luis Saez. Connections: Time: 1:46.87 (good)

Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf –Godolphin’s homebred LUCULLAN (Luis Saez) won his first career graded stakes with a 1-length win over OLYMPICO (FR) in Belmont Park’s $200,000 Knickerbocker (G2). The 5-year-old son of Hard Spun missed 14 months due to injury but has returned better than ever this year for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, as he’s now won 3-of-4 starts, with his lone defeat coming Sept. 14 in a third-place finish (disqualified to fourth) in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1), a “Win and You’re In” for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile. Lucullan, who is now 6-for-13 lifetime, won Saratoga’s Lure in August and McLaughlin indicated he could run next in the Dec. 14 Fort Lauderdale (G2) at Gulfstream Park, as a prep for the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) there Jan. 25. The disappointment in the race was Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stable, Sienna Farm, and Twin Creeks Racing Stable’s CATHOLIC BOY, who was fourth at even-money for trainer Jonathan Thomas. The 4-year-old son of More Than Ready, who won the Travers (G1) last year at Saratoga and was 13th in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, was making his first start since running second in the local Suburban (G2) on the main track July 6. Catholic Boy is 7-for-13 lifetime, including a win in Pimlico’s Dixie (G2) in May in his only other start this year, and while the finish wasn’t ideal, Thomas still will entertain a potential Breeders’ Cup start. "I don't know yet (about the Breeders’ Cup. We'll see when he gets back. This could be one of those instances where we get back in his training and he's really taken a big step forward,” Thomas said. “He was very even and he looked like a horse that getting a mile and a quarter wouldn't be an issue. He galloped out well. He was just a little one-paced. Watching that it would scream he needs a little more real estate. The (Breeders’ Cup) Mile would be a little bit quick for him. The (Breeders’ Cup) Classic would be the most likely scenario, but we'll have to talk to everybody." Video: The Knickerbocker
