    AN ANALYSIS OF THE MUSICAL INTERPRETATIONS OF NINA SIMONE by JESSIE L. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s.

    Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 13, 2015 Contact: Edward Wilensky (619) 232-7636 [email protected] Soprano Patricia Racette Returns to San Diego Opera “Diva on Detour” Program Features Famed Soprano Singing Cabaret and Jazz Standards Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 7 PM at the Balboa Theatre San Diego, CA – San Diego Opera is delighted to welcome back soprano Patricia Racette for her wildly-acclaimed “Diva on Detour” program which features the renowned singer performing cabaret and jazz standards by Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Edith Piaf, among others, on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 7 PM at the Balboa Theatre. Racette is well known to San Diego Opera audiences, making her Company debut in 1995 as Mimì in La bohème, and returning in 2001 as Love Simpson in Cold Sassy Tree (a role she created for the world premiere at Houston Grand Opera), in 2004 for the title role of Katya Kabanova, and in 2009 as Cio-Cio San in Madama Buttefly. She continues to appear regularly in the most acclaimed opera houses of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Santa Fe Opera. Known as a great interpreter of Janáček and Puccini, she has gained particular notoriety for her portrayals of the title roles of Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Jenůfa, Katya Kabanova, and all three leading soprano roles in Il Trittico. Richard the Lionheart Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has rectified Through June 26 that omission with a striking, elegantly cast new staging, and with any luck it will follow La Rondine OTSL’s fine 2004 “Nixon in China” revival into many opera houses around the country. Through June 28 “Emmeline” is based on a true mid-19th- Opera Theatre of Saint Louis century story: A 14-year-old girl, sent to work in a textile mill in Massachusetts to help her impoverished family, is seduced by the factory owner’s married son-in-law. Her child is given up for adoption. Twenty years later, she falls in love with a young man named Matthew Gurney, and marries him, only to discover that he is her son.

The English diction texts by Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff are two of the most acclaimed manuals on singing in this language. Differences in style between the two have separated proponents to be primarily devoted to one or the other. An in- depth study, comparing the precepts of both authors, and applying their principles, has resulted in an understanding of their common ground, as well as the need for the more comprehensive information, included by LaBouff, on singing in the dialect of American Standard, and changes in current Received Pronunciation, for British works, and Mid- Atlantic dialect, for English language works not specifically North American or British. Chapter 1 introduces Marshall and The Singer’s Manual of English Diction, and LaBouff and Singing and Communicating in English. An overview of selected works from Opera America’s resources exemplifies the need for three dialects in standardized English training.

MEI ZHONG-ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA JULY, 2012 Herbert’s Songs: Designed for Classical Singers Introduction Victor Herbert has undoubtedly provided America some of its greatest, most tender, romantic, invigorating, and challenging songs for soprano. Today, Herbert’s masterworks appear simultaneously in both Musical Theater Anthologies and Operatic Collections. Many students encounter questions as to performance practice: can these songs be sung as “musical theater,” with young, immature voices, or should they be studied by classical singers? Despite the pool of speculation swirling around this issue, there has not been any significant research on this particular topic. This study will detail the vocal abilities of Herbert’s most prolific sopranos (Alice Nielsen, Fritzi Scheff, and Emma Trentini), and identify compositional elements of three of Herbert’s most famous arias (“The Song of the Danube,” “Kiss Me Again,” and “Italian Street Song”), using historical data to demonstrate that each composition was tailored specifically for the versatility and profound vocal ability of each opera singer, and is poorly mishandled by those without proper classical training. The writer will offer observations from three amateur online recordings of “Art Is Calling For Me.” The writer will use the recordings to highlight specific pitfalls untrained singers may encounter while singing Herbert, such as maneuvering coloratura passages, breath control, singing large intervallic leaps, and the repeated use of the upper tessitura.
